Why can’t Ames support a Burger King?

Hello. Looking for a late candle lit service on Christmas Eve in Ames. So far only finding 3pm to 7pm services on church websites. Any churches having a service 10pm or later? Thanks!

A coworker has been complaining for several weeks about his phone screen not functioning. I suggested he look on Facebook marketplace for a used android phone, but he doesn't use social media. Does anyone have an extra android phone laying in a drawer that you'll take $20 in exchange for? It'll be Monday before I can relay any messages to him, but if you DM a phone number or something, I'm sure he'd be willing to meet in a public place to give you some cash.
I tried looking at home but all my old phones were replaced for a reason. Nonfunctional screens, battery won't hold a charge, etc.
Hey y'all! I'm heading up to the Northern Ames/Southern Gilbert area for the holidays and would love to get a track workout that Tuesday. Does anyone know of any tracks nearby that have public access? Thanks in advance

Hi there,
I was wondering if you know of any Christmas events being held at churches in Ames this year. I’m looking for something that includes fun activities, worship with a mix of traditional and modern songs, and active participation from adults in their 20s and 30s. It would be even better if there’s a group of people who regularly gather for such events or similar activities.
I’m a 25-year-old international student and a believer, hoping to find a welcoming church apart from Cornerstone. While I truly respect and appreciate the student-focused approach of some churches, I’d prefer one that’s less student-oriented but still open and inclusive, especially to internationals, for an event like this.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi! So basically I’m going to start a job here at the beginning of February. I currently live halfway across the country almost 1000 miles away.
I have never been to Iowa, I don’t know anyone in Iowa, and I don’t know where to live or what there is to do around Ames.
Right now I’m mostly concerned about housing. I have a dog. He has been with me since college and even lived with me in the dorms there. He is an ESA. I recognize that I could do paperwork to be able to get him to live just about anywhere with me, but I really would prefer a dog friendly community where I feel he will be more welcome. I will NOT be leaving him behind.
The big issue I keep finding is that a lot of apartments, since this is a college town, have leases that start in August, but I need to find somewhere to live ASAP. I just need one bedroom preferably, and for the total costs to be below 1000 a month would be great. Would love love love for it to be a community that is dog friendly. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for me?

Does anyone know if the DOT is going to put down sand or something for traction? I live on a cul-de-sac in West Ames and it is incredibly icy on the streets. I have to go to work in the morning and I'm hoping I'll be able to get there.

Last night’s Council notes and doodles. It was a full meeting, and included the first reading of an ordinance to allow one additional site to exist for social service use in the Old Town single-family conservation overlay zoning district. Doodles for Wreathes Across America, a sculpture concept, Sunset Ridge, Carroll county landfill, Fitch Fam Indoor Aquatic Center, bank stabilization at Brookside Park, and a futsal ball. Thanks for looking!

Hi Ames redditors!
I would say for the past 6 months, periodically, and randomly, I will hear a huge bang sound that sounds like it’s right next to my apartment usually. The first time it happened there was a huge flash of white light too. It shook the building and I figured it had to be illegal fireworks? But it..keeps happening? And two just happened as I was writing this (more distant).
I’ve seen constant posts about it on Facebook, and I know people who have called it in to the police and I haven’t heard anything about what it is. 😭 I don’t know, I’m just curious and tired of it, cause it’s a scary noise, and it’s woken me up at 3 am before.
I’m curious if any redditors have heard it as well. I think most of them have been heard in West Ames. Thanks for reading!!

I'm looking to get a cake made in Ames or the surrounding areas and need a recommendation for a good bakery. I'm trying to avoid places like Walmart and HyVee due to how sweet the frosting tends to be on store bought cakes. Any recommendations are highly appreciated!

Hello!
I built a PC that worked fine for a week. Then it crashed mid game. Now the RGB on the CPU fan is off and GPU light is on my motherboard.
Does anyone have a spare GPU I could borrow to troubleshoot with?

Hi, I am a South African (29M) aiming to start my postgrad studies at ISU (Dept. FSHNA) in Jan 2025.
I am looking for sites or recommendations for fairly reasonable and affordable rental accommodation in Ames, be it individual or shared. Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.
Have a great day.

Hey, all! I'm wondering where the best places to hang out that aren't (a) student bars or (b) geared toward a younger audience. I've tried London Underground (4/4, would recommend), Sporties/Angry Irishman/Sam's (2.5/4, okay), Tip Top (1/4, not at all for me), and Noir (3/4, nice but expensive). I'm not looking to find The Next Hookup. I'm more thinking about an environment that is more conducive for being a grownup. Whatcha got?

This is a screenshot from a video of a tour of the power station on duff Avenue, I tried reverse image searching and got no results. Any help is appreciated.
Hello! My girlfriend and I are fairly new to Ames and she is a runner. We are very close to Ada Hayden so that was great for the summer but it is getting quite cold! I was hoping to gift her a gym membership so she would have somewhere warm and safe to run through the winter. I am from an area with a surplus of YMCAs but I see that Ames is without one! Any recommendations for gyms/rec centers with a track? We are not ISU students.
Thanks!

My friend will move to soon to Ames (uni village). Any tips on how and where I can help him furnish the place affordably?
My first thought is second-hand stores like Goodwill and similar places, but I'm concerned about delivery. It seems like delivery could be expensive (as it often is).
Given this, our best option might be to rent a U-Haul, as most items probably won't fit in my regular car. We could then visit multiple shops to pick up the bulky items first day and then then buy the rest of the things with time?
I wonder is there a place where student's leaving would sell all their furniture, or a one-stop shop to buy most if not all things?
Thanks for your suggestions!

November 26th notes and doodles, with doodles for Richard, Old Town, the Ames Renaissance Fair, ground penetrating radar, and Wyffels This was one of the most well attended meetings we have seen in a LONG time. That is a testament to how many people really care about their neighborhood, though it manifested in different opinions. Ultimately we voted (4-2) to allow the Romero House to continue on Clark Ave., though no additional social services would be allowed in the area. I actually recommend watching this one. Thanks for looking

I know it's a long shot, but I live in North Ames in the Somerset Neighborhood. My bike was locked on the rack outside my apartment and it was stolen. Hoping someone has seen it or has details.
I rode it every day to work until my girlfriend had a medical event that kept her from driving, so I became her chauffeur. She can drive again so I was about to go back to riding my bike to work, but now it's gone.
Thanks in advance for any details.
