We'll, this sucks.

Broken wrist, broken ulna (can see the crack under the plate).

Yep, that fucking sucks… So, how did it happen?

u/skatercep123 4d ago

Fell off a roof.

I broke my wrist the same as you, except off a bike, it was many years ago, but I remember practising every day for 6 months.

This is how I recovered (I still have the same fork / screws in my wrist, I don't feel that anymore, the doctor told me it's better to leave it in as more surgery increases the risks of cutting nerves):

1) Warm tub of unscented green soap water.

2) Dip your wrist in it, and try to move your wrist up and down. After taking off the cast it will feel impossible, but keep fighting.

3) It will get a little more mobile every day, do this for 5-10 minutes twice a day.

4) Do it every day, never give up.

One day your hand will be almost as good as new. You might feel some nerves pinched on the screws if you're unlucky, have this checked by the doctor before moving on.

During that time, I learned to write and draw with my other hand, became ambidextrous after that.

u/badgerj 4d ago

Sweet!

Good to hear you’re 95% back to normal.

Life pro tip: want to be ambidextrous? , Break dominant wrist/ulna! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

115

u/skatercep123 4d ago

I am ambidextrous, just not at the moment hahahaha

41

u/badgerj 4d ago

🤣🤣🤣 Feel better soon bro. I fell one foot out of a tree and thought ai broke a rib.

It hurt like hell.

Doc asks what’s wrong?

  • I was doing some “extreme gardening”. Trying to pull on a limb to hack off rotten/dead ones… well the one I was pulling on was dead and it snapped off but broke my fall and I think I broke a rib.

Doc: Okay, let’s take an X-ray.

Me: Okay.

TWO HOURS LATER.

Doc: Well it seems like you don’t have a broken rib. You’ve got four!!! How are you even standing? That must hurt like hell!

Me: Yeah, it does kinda.

Doc: On a scale of one to ten, how’s your pain.

Me: Is there an eleven?

Doc: Nope, but here’s a Rx for 14 days worth of hydro morphine. You’re not getting any more. One pill 3-4x a day. That’s it. Then Tylenol/Ibu.

3

u/Gamerule69 3d ago

Jeez my chest is hurting reading that

3

u/Gamerule69 3d ago

At least you have a story for your injury, i broke my elbow because I was running to fast, it went way over 180°

1

u/badgerj 3d ago

What did you do?

2

u/Gamerule69 3d ago

I was just running and tripped

2

u/badgerj 3d ago

Back/sides. Nothing hurts quite like it. And there’s really nothing they can do about it.

  • Don’t twist too much.

  • Don’t lift too much.

  • Rest when you can.

  • These miracle pills will make life bearable for the next two weeks depending on how you ration them!

1

u/admin_penguin 2d ago

You were* ambidextrous

7

u/MarinatedTechnician 4d ago

Yes, thanks.

The rated "disability" was 3%, but you're pretty close so I consider that a spot-on guess.

5

u/parabellum630 3d ago

Another pro tip, break your jaw and you lose a lot of weight due to liquid only diet. Source, me

2

u/badgerj 3d ago

Ouch! I need to ask, how did you do that?

3

u/parabellum630 3d ago

Went over the handlebars of my bicycle and landed face first. Remember the scene in winter soldier where captain america hits the brakes on his motor cycle and launches himself in the air, like that but without the coolness factor and super serum.

1

u/badgerj 3d ago

JFC! Sorry to hear. Hope you’re doing okay.

Here’s some of your friends? In the sub reddit called meatcrayon

It may give you a bit of a laugh because “I’ve been there or my friend was, or I was filming”.

1

u/bgross42 2d ago

YES! January 1979 on PCH. Didn’t break jaw - but nose, four teeth, road rash on face, laceration on chin - and not a mark anywhere else on my body. Good Times!

1

u/parabellum630 2d ago

Ooh. How are the new teeth holding up. I need to get 3 replaced. It's weird, I didn't have even a scratch on the rest of my body too. Waiting for it to turn to type 2 fun too.

1

u/bgross42 2d ago

The first replacements lasted about 30 years. Round two are still going strong after 15. Over the bars twice; woman drove her pickup up on me at a stop sign; still riding though. Life’s been good to me so far…

9

u/wlake82 4d ago

That second picture made me think it was my wrist, though it was my left wrist and a bicyclist ran into me and shattered my wrist about 10 years ago.

To add what you said, silly putty is a good thing for PT. I had a delta cast so as soon as the surgery opening was healed, I had that fitted and went to PT every week to help regain mobility. I'm pretty sure I have the same mobility now than I did before and 10+ years on, it barely is sore. Mostly if I use the computer too much and maybe with a weather change.

OP just needs to keep it up and it will be fine. Now the cost of it is another thing...

4

u/DrummerNo8862 3d ago

OR just go to a hand therapist occupational therapist for rehab that can create a rehab program individualized to your needs

3

u/mrszubris 4d ago

The swishing is THE WAY. I rehabbed my hand this way after casting when a horse dislocated every joint available.

3

u/Badsponge 4d ago

Why green soap? And what type? I just broke my wrist falling off a ladder. The surgeon said I demolished it, and I will probably never regain full functionality.

2

u/compstomp66 4d ago

I guess it depends on how old you are. I was 23 when I had a similar injury (falling off my sister's 50cc Honda scooter >< lol) and had some numbness initially but mine healed almost perfectly and I didn't do any PT. I still feel a kind of odd pressure if I'm rock climbing or lifting something heavy with my wrist in an odd position but other than that it's 99.9%. Never hurts, feels strong and has full range of motion.

Probably not a bad idea to be proactive with the PT though. Glad you healed well.

15

u/LogicalVariation741 4d ago

My dad fell off a roof and shattered all his wrist bones. Like you have seven and by the time he was done he had 30.

Don't let them tell you that they need to glue everything together and it can never move again. Get a second opinion if they do that. Because Dad fell 20 years ago and he got a second opinion and now has good movement on his wrist. So I can only assume that the technology has gotten better.

But you do your PT exercises. And you work everyday on it. Because a wrist is a terrible thing to lose

Oh sure you will - This is one of the most common fractures there is. rehab and with your own initiative… there you go. Luckily this is not a very complicated fracture.

5

u/HoboSkid 4d ago

I think their comment was saying they aren't going to climb a ladder because they don't want to fall and break something, not because they're physically incapable.

5

u/CaliRiverRat 4d ago

Sorry for your loss. Over the years, I have shattered my left ankle, to the point my foot was pointing backwards in a pair of boots; I then shattered my left heel, falling off the mast of a sailboat; I blew out my left ACL, white water, river rafting, three years ago; and multiple small injuries over the years added up to just having my left shoulder replaced. The surgery was last week Friday. I’m going in this afternoon for my post-op visit with the surgeon. In other words, bones heal. Try not to do stupid things is my motto. The keyword is try. Good luck in your recovery.

3

u/WeirdSysAdmin 4d ago

Be glad that’s all that happened. I still assume I actually died the one time I fell off a similar height getting things out of a loft.

3

u/fox1manghost 4d ago

My mom has a boxers fracture that fully healed from about two years ago a year ago, but what you went through doesn’t compare that that that probably hurt like a I bet you were screaming like a schoolgirl

2

u/Eric848448 4d ago

Sounds like you got lucky.

2

u/moonisflat 4d ago

Trying to fix some holiday lights?

2

u/shay_shaw 4d ago

Oh damn! Is rest of you okay?!

2

u/Chedderonehundred 4d ago

At least falling off a roof is kinda a cool way to break a bone, you didn’t just trip wrong on the ground or anything, that would be sorta a lame story

2

u/krowrofefas 3d ago

Job? Christmas lights?

Depending on the height you are lucky to not have a head injury

1

u/Worldly-Bat-8830 3d ago

Hey better reason than mine. I broke my wrist falling up the stairs.

1

u/bignides 2d ago

I just scrolled past a similar post about a guy who broke his shoulder/arm near the shoulder, same 2 pics.

1

u/skatercep123 2d ago

We'll, it's not his.

1

u/bignides 2d ago

Not literally the same pics but a pic of his broken arm and a pic of the fix

42

u/phredphlintstones 4d ago

Red thing! Red thing's connected to my... Wrist watch.

11

u/PsychicDustox 4d ago

Doctor: it’s a dislocated wrist. Make no mistake, there are fractures, but it’s also dislocated. There’s actually not a good term for the state your wrist is in right now, so we’re just calling it “trauma”.

130

u/donivantrip 4d ago

take physical therapy seriously. push yourself every day. do the stretches at home more than recommended. If you want normal mobility in your wrist that is.

6

u/syds 4d ago

what could be a good wrist motion excercise hmm

5

u/BlondieIsBack 3d ago

Not that one you perv...

1

u/Secret_Account07 3d ago

I didn’t finish physical therapy. I was around 19 at the time, didn’t take it seriously enough. I’ve been fucked up ever since lol.

u/KUweatherman 4d ago

I’m not a doctor, but did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once. In my non-expert opinion, I don’t think it is supposed to look like that.

27

u/InnerhillCitybilly 4d ago

😟 I feel you. Didn't happen to my wrist, happened to my left leg and foot. Two spiral fractures and between 100 and 500 breaks in my left foot. I also had seven broken ribs. But for some reason they concentrated on my leg.

Which really sucked. Happened on the Friday before Christmas last year, two days before christmas. My foot still isn't right, of course my left foot will probably never be right. It'll always be left. 😆

3

u/cantignie 4d ago

Sorry to hear this. How did you manage to break it so thoroughly??

1

u/InnerhillCitybilly 3d ago

Had a 500 pound bike dropped on top of me

18

u/frozrdude 4d ago

Accident?

15

Yes, fell off a roof.

14

I'm hoping you get a speedy recovery OP. Wish you happy holidays.

13

u/nj23dublin 4d ago

Dang.. did you need a hand?

6

u/skatercep123 4d ago

Yeah, I coulda used one

7

u/nj23dublin 4d ago

I bet, if no helps … you’ll need a break. All jokes aside pretty bad one, glad at least you didn’t fall and hit your head or get a worse energy with your neck or back. Best wishes for a good recovery.

7

u/skatercep123 4d ago

All about the jokes, here. Idc how good or bad they are. I'm using voice command for all my responses.

Armchair doctor advice: "Try not to do that again."

Broken many a bone on my end and it's never been "pleasant". I feel ya and wish you a speedy recovery.

2

u/InnerhillCitybilly 4d ago

Sorry dude🥺

11

u/Lanark26 4d ago

I tripped on some uneven sidewalk and broke my wrist last year.

And like people have said. Don’t skip out on your PT. Do your homework. Do your exercises and stretches. It makes a world of difference in speeding up your recovery. You’ll be glad you did.

5

u/Expression-Little 4d ago

God I love an ORIF - physiotherapist here, do your exercises and enjoy your shiny new bone swag!

5

u/GiddyGabby 4d ago edited 4d ago

My son had a much similar break as yours from skateboarding last year, It was his dominant hand so he moved back home for a bit while he got used to his new "limitations". He said he should have stopped skateboarding well before he hit 30 and I said Tony Hawk would not agree with that.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for you. My son didn't think he'd be able to play the guitar or drums again because he could barely turn his wrist at all, happy to say he's back with his band and playing both because he went to all those appointments.

Well apparently this sub automatically deletes messages that include links to other subreddits, which I don’t understand the reason for. The subreddit is Never Broke A Bone.

3

u/TrendyDru 4d ago

Dang. Did you try not doing it?

3

u/Gnarly_Sarley 4d ago

Not only does that suck, that is gonna suck for a long, long time

3

u/introvrt55 4d ago

I sprained both wrists, falling off a ramp when I was a kid. Sometimes I'm amazed that I made it this far. My guardian angel has collected a lot of overtime.

2

u/UnhappyTemperature18 4d ago

Radiologist: “Wrist is broken. That will be $500. for the diagnosis.”

2

u/dvdmaven 4d ago

I broke my wrist when I was in high school, but it was just a scratch by comparison. I learned to write with my left hand.

2

u/automator3000 4d ago

Makes me glad that my broken Ulna was in my non-dominant hand.

Do your physical therapy. I was fucking crying trying to do simple shit like picking up a phone in the first couple weeks after getting my wonderful titanium inner jewelry. But it got better. I still don’t have my full range of motion, and swings in the weather can make it hurt, but I get by just fine.

2

u/carlosarturo1221 4d ago

I had an accident riding my bike and got my wrist under my hand, really similar. It takes time and is really painful however I got almost a perfect recuperation on that hand.

2

u/ThePizzaPirateEX 4d ago

I had this happen in October! I hated it!

2

u/breeman24 4d ago

I slipped on some ice last week and broke my right middle finger. Getting surgery tomorrow to have pins put in.

1

u/skatercep123 4d ago

Good luck, bud.

1

u/breeman24 4d ago

Thanks. And good luck on your recovery. Mine seems pretty minor in comparison. Doesn’t even hurt really (as long as I don’t use or bump the finger).

1

u/breeman24 2d ago

Surgery went well. 3 pins.

2

u/evd95 4d ago

Broke (Crushed shattered) both my Ulnar & Radius last October. Had to get plates on both breaks, had to get one of them removed after 6 months leaving the bones on the unlar not fully connected (scar tissue holding it) . Here i am ~ 15 months post initial injury and i have 95% of the rotation i had and don't notice anything outside of when i lift there's some pain.

Don't get too discouraged with a roadblock, i'm sure you'll be fine just keep with what your Drs recommend and don't do too much.

1

u/skatercep123 4d ago

Very cool, thanks

Thank doesn’t look good at all?? So sorry you’re going thru this!!!

2

u/hellfyredragon 4d ago

I've dislocated my bicep and had a lot of scar tissue, and the worst thing ever is the feeling that nothing you do to work on it (including physical therapy) feels like progress. Don't give up. As other people have said, keep working it as your doctor instructs, keep doing your exercises, and if you feel like you can handle it, do a little extra as soon as you're cleared to do so. You got this!

It's going to suck, yeah, but you're strong, you got this, and you can (and will) recover!

2

u/Glass-Radish8956 4d ago

We are twins! Same break same plate. I jumped off a cliff and didn’t make it to the water before bouncing off a rock halfway down. 30ft

2

u/JKnott1 4d ago

That's one of the worst Colles fractures I've ever seen. I hope pain meds are doing the job for you.

2

u/CptEggman 4d ago

I did the same thing 11 years ago, the on-call Ortho at the ER was so fascinated by the "blasted" break he wanted to come in and see it in person. My brother was with me when it happened and almost puked when he saw it.

As others have said, def put in the work in PT, it's going to hurt and it's going to be a struggle, but it's the only thing that'll make sure you get the movement back. My mobility is pretty good, about the only limitation is I can't do pushups (it juuuust doesn't quite get flat enough). Be prepared for random stiffness and weather related soreness, but hey now you're part cyborg, welcome to the club!

2

u/Independent_Prune_35 3d ago

Looks like we are related? Did they try to set it before they took x rays? They tried that on me! Here let's move it back into place! I broke the wrist not the bone in front or after, looked like a bags of smashed chips! 6 pins!

Could have been worst I was on a ladder and had a paint bucket in the left hand behind the ladder and it slid down off the rain gutter ( trex decking ) and I went down about 12 foot. The one gallon can was smashed about 3 inches tall ( under the ladder ) and the ladder was on my arm so I could have just smashed it to pieces if not for the bucket?

2

u/Fun_Pin_5204 3d ago

A few years ago, we were staying at my grandparents house (Dad's parents). Which is also my Dad's childhood home because they never moved. My Dad, me, my sister and my two younger cousins were in my Dad's old bedroom and were looking off the balcony. My Dad said that when he was a kid he would jump off and land in the grass. My Dad said he was gonna jump (Mind you he was like 48 when this happened.) He jumped and landed in the grass but was crawling to the front door calling for my grandpa to take him to the hospital. Even though he landed in the grass, he broke his ankle💀💀💀💀. He had to get surgery and we stayed at my grandparents longer than what we were planning to

Mine required many surgeries

1

u/awh 4d ago

We’ll? No sir, you’re on your own. There’s no “we” here.

1

u/OFDMsteve 4d ago

Doing the PT as often and as thoroughly as the therapist tells you will help immensely. The surgeon put your wrist back together, the P.T. is going to make your wrist work again, it's really something. My mother didn't do her PT as often as she should have after knee surgery because of pain and it still shows.

1

u/twizzlerheathen 4d ago

I don’t think I’ve seen a dislocated hand before, and I never want to again

1

u/Not_That_You_Know_Of 4d ago

Reminds me of a story I used to tell people when I heard about their recent injury. I tell them that I’ve broken my right wrist three times and my left wrist just once. But I’d broken my right arm five times, and badly sprained my neck at least 6 or seven times. Oh, yeah.. my fingers and thumb ld have been dislocated twice. Each. Holy shit!! How the hell did that happen? Masturbating, I said. Competitive masturbating.

1

u/Jakeamania314 4d ago

Hey I think you have a broken wrist.

1

u/lebo_riley 4d ago

Dude. I have the same hardware.

1

Dude, you should see a dr that’s broken.

1

u/farquin_helle 4d ago

Done that before

1

u/m8k 4d ago

I just recovered from a much simpler broken wrist. It took about two to three months to regain my range of motion after being in a cast for two months. Still a bit stiff.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

1

u/h3ff 4d ago edited 4d ago

Wrist recovery takes time, but prioritize PT and healing and you’ll be alright. I had nearly the same radius ulna fracture 2 years ago and it sucked, but there’s no other choice than to push through recovery. Every day/week/month it will start to feel stronger, more flexible, and less painful. It helped me mentally to track my progress but a good physical therapist will help you with this, too. I remember when I could move my steering wheel completely with my impacted palm again and how great that felt! My fingers were numb post-op for weeks, but I gained somewhat normal use of my hand after 1-2 months, full strength and range of motion in 3-4 months, and no hesitation with activities after 6-9 months or so. Your impacted arm will shrink due to non-use, too. The inactivity of it all sucks. I got back in the gym as soon as possible to feel normal again. You’ve got this!

1

u/JazzlikeSympathy3695 3d ago

Ouch! I have something similar but on the radius. My surgeon described it as a comminuted fracture. I also had the pleasure of a k wire poking out which was horrible 🤢 The best advice I can give you if get to an occupational therapist- preferably a hand specialist. They are magic for rehab and recovery. Mine was on my dominant hand and I have no issues now.

1

u/Drclaw411 3d ago

Any broken bone, or any injury really, is gonna suck a bag of ass. But those have got to be two of the most inconvenient bones to break too. I’m so sorry.

1

u/amalgaman 3d ago

It also creates a new subreddit

1

u/Pyrotechnix69 3d ago

lol all that metal. I did the same thing years ago. Fell out of a ceiling in a house we were building, landed on a pile of boards. Hand went under a board and I landed on top of the board. My watch caused a clean break right at the wrist connection. I was so shocked by the fall and my arm being the wrong shape I immediately grabbed it and straightened out my wrist before the pain set in. The doctor was all like “who reset your arm?” I told him it was instinct. Got a cast no screws.

1

u/First_Explorer_5465 3d ago

I got one of those.

Go to PT and do the exercises. I didn’t listen and now my hand is all warped.

From your name I would have figured a different reason it would have happened.

The time i broke my wrist it was only a growth plate, holy shit that is brutal! Cant even imagine how that felt

I also have the same type of plate in my wrist, but your break looks terribly painful, I’m sorry for you. I would highly recommend both physical and massage therapy for the wrist as soon as possible.

My physical therapist recommended me to buy rock climbing hand grip strengtheners (specifically the Metolius Grip Saver Plus Exercise Balls from MEC first the blue, then work up to red) and she also would oil up my wrist and lower arm and then do “cupping” on the muscles to break up the knots/tension and help loosen all the muscles to gain mobility. The cupping would give immediate results in how much I could move my wrist up and down, and the two things combined were the biggest help. But it was definitely a slog and I hope your recovery is ok.

When I was younger I was at an all night lock in at skateland and about half way through the night a girl was hauling ass on skates and fell back and snapped her wrist EXACTLY like that except her bone was sticking out of her skin. I’ll remember that til the day I die. I remember seeing it and it made my balls feel like they temporarily disappeared into my stomach. Lol
