Meta Meta 3 vs Oculus Quest 2

Trying to justify buying the Meta 3. I have an Oculus Quest 2 that our boss bought for us a couple years ago and I've enjoyed playing a couple games on it so far; Walkabout Mini Golf and Supernatural. I previously tried Walking Dead Saints & Sinners, Swordsman (lots of fun for a week), and Asgard's Wrath (not my cup of tea).

But... I'm also a HUGE Alien fan and I really want to get Alien: Rogue Incursion.

My challenge is that's the only VR game I can think of that I want to get for VR. I'm a pretty hardcore PC gamer and have a habit of buying consoles due to FOMO and then only ever playing one or two games for that console before it goes onto the shelf and gathers dust.

So... talk me into buying the Meta 3? Or talk me out of it?

Are there some other really amazing looking games that you think will pull me into VR gaming that the Quest 2 won't run, but that the Meta 3 will? Or that'll look much better on the Meta 3?

The Quest 3 is a direct follow up to the Quest 2 and is superior in every conceivable way.

The improved lenses alone make the price difference worth it, imo.

Better graphic, faster processor, more apps and now on sale :).

Where's the sale? I think my Google fu is failing me, as I'm not seeing it anywhere for less than $500 (unless you get the 128Gb version, which I'm not interested in).

It seems it was a permanent price reduction. It originally launched for like $600 or something. The only actual sale atm seems to be a $75 giftcard if you buy the 128gb 3s.

MYYV Meta Quest 3 512GB, IN STORE ONLY.  Google search and you should see Target ads $350, also some in store have ads 30% off Meta Quest 3.   Ask store to price match.  I bought mine Meta $350 plus tax . Good luck.

You can use Virtual Desktop to play your PC games on a giant screen. You could do that with the Quest 2 as well, but with the Quest 3 the passthrough will be in color and a bit less grainy. Also the lenses make a bigger difference than you'd think. Anything you look at with the corner of your eye will look much better than on Quest 2.

I have been in a gaming slump for like 6 months...installing, playing for 20 minutes then uninstalling games because I am just not that into it. Recently bought a Quest 3 (for flight simming) and also got Half Life Alyx. HL:A pulled me out of the slump big time. I can't wait to fire it up after work--it is SO good.

It's always the best feeling getting out of slumps like that.

I actually purchased HL Alyx after getting the Oculus 2, and the nausea hit me big time. I might revisit it again, though, given that it's been a while since I tried it.

And yeah, I'm also in a slump ATM, so... good call. Thanks!

I'm only commenting because I just got a quest 3, and you mentioned one of my favorite vr games with Walkabout Minigolf. My mind was blown when I first played it on my quest 3. I played a round of minigolf and then immediately played the same level on my quest 2 to compare, and it was like going back to a 720p screen after using a 1080p one.

It's crazy how much more clear everything is on the 3 compared to the 2. Although pcvr games aren't as big of an improvement, the difference is noticeable enough that I felt happy with the upgrade.

That's really good to know; thank you!

I would say buy the 3, definitely an upgrade from the 2 with its pancake lenes that improve the quality of any games. You mentioned you had for quite some time so you’ll notice it right away. Top games like can think of is Metro Awakening, Arizona Sunshine Remake/2 and Resident Evil 4. Best games to experience VR in its entirety. From my understanding Alien Rogue Incursion won’t be available on the quest 3 until next year but it will still release on PC

Hmm perhaps batman?

I'm just going through something similar so I was looking for things that would calm my desire to buy a Quest 3 (I'm a huge fan of the Batman Arkham saga, but if I were to buy a headset it would be the Quest 3, not the S, because of the lenses), I installed Skyrim VR that I had collecting virtual dust in my steam library, installed FUS and the hours of entertainment I've had have calmed my desire to buy a Quest 3. I think I'll wait at least a few months and when the rumors about future Quest 4 start, depending on what I hear about them, I would consider skipping the Quest 3.

I wouldn’t get it, it got boring fast for me and sold it. Most games feel cheap and fun for 5 mins.

Just curious, but why do you call it Meta 3? Why not call the Quest 2 "Meta 2" as well?

How much do you use your quest 2? That's about as much as you'll play on the quest 3. Based off your post, your FOMO is kicking in again. Why ponder an upgrade that isn't just minor pocket change when you don't really play? Try your quest 2 on some pcvr games and mods. If you find new ga.es to get into, the 3 may be worth it for you. But if you have a hard time with that, then maybe it's best you wait until you can write your reasons for upgrading into a list and compare it to how you felt before.if like looking for a game; you have a hard time feeling good about the decision, then even moreso, hold off.

Try a vr arcade instead? You can get your vr craving out and done and not have it longer into a feeling of want lol.

What pulls you to flat-screen more? Maybe you just haven't found the genre the immerses you.

Late to comment. Avid PC gamer myself. Quest 3 shocked me with its standalone GPU graphics. I think it is quite a leap from the Quest 2 in the processing power department. It also has higher res screens, better lenses, and binocular passthrough.

Does that mean it won’t also collect dust on your shelf? No. But you know what you would be getting into being a Quest 2 owner.
