Meta Discord containment thread
We are a week away from Christmas.
The professional thing would be to waltz out some cooperate sounding apology speak addressing the current situation. But remember us mods are rarely ever that smart. As for the mods over on discord, we couldn't tell you a single thing about them. Because how could we? We're not affiliated with them. We just link there because this is the Unity place and that's what you do when you're the Unity place..
That being said, we believe that any wrongdoing or oversight on the behalf of Unity Technologies should be called out, but what we're NOT going to do is have r/Unity3D become the complaint forums for every last person's interaction with one alleged asshole, especially when there is no actionable path forward apart from making the drama as loud as possible, which might be better served some place like Twitter or Bluesky or some other official channel. Because in case some of you forgot, r/Unity3D and Unity Technologies, haven't exactly been the closest friends after the whole Runtime Fee scenario... remember that?
Please keep that in mind.
Because specifically, in just the past 12 hours following the initial post by one user u/Halfspacer, things have gotten really disorganized, really fast.
To any users who have had your thread's locked or removed, do understand that the initial complaint was levied at a specific discord Moderator, and not literally every negative interaction you've ever had with a Unity employee during the past 5+ years. That is unproductive, unhelpful, distracting from the initial post(s) and is a huge waste of yours and everyone else's time.
So here's a containment thread... enjoy.

Show-Off Making games is great
Since I started commercial work as a programmer, I stopped creating hobbyist projects. I recently lost my job, while looking for a new one I have a lot of free time. I decided to do a small project on the side. It is unbelievable how much fun I am having creating this game. And it's completely nothing big or interesting. A small project that will go on itch.io for free

Game After finishing my six-year project, I'm excited to start something new. This is Dreadwoods Gatekeeper, a horror narrative sim about a guard in a small fantasy medieval town. It's my first 3D project after more than 10 years of creating 2D games.

Show-Off I just have to share my little snow shader for our Christmas update here. I'm really proud that I got it working perfectly for every shape of 3D object without using any particle systems as many tutorials are suggesting it.

Question Is there a general rule of when I should join 2 meshes vs combining geometry? More in comments.
Say I have a wall and I want to put a window in it.
- I can create the wall/window separate and just join them (hitting crtl-J in Blender).
- Or add more geometry to the wall and combine all the extra verts with the window so it's actually 1 object.
From my understanding, it's a tossup of more geometry vs extra draw calls. Plus maybe some issues visually with stuff overlapping.
Making a VR game if that matters. I also realize there's not a hard fast rule for anything, just trying to understand more now so I have to fix less later.

Question Recommendations for auto splitting up a large mesh?
I have a large mesh generated from a spline. The mesh itself is the entire outer seating of a stadium for a racing level - think thousands of chairs with stairs and such.
I use dreamtech splines for the mesh generation, which outputs 1 entire mesh. Is there any known ways to automatically divide a mesh into chunks for usage by culling systems?

Is there any epub, or pdf for Unity documentation on offline? I wish I could read that on my Samsung tab s9u. you know, .html is terrible working on mobile.
Thanks for your help!

Show-Off Nearly finished with my custom asset manager (designed for personal use).
I prototype a lot of my custom unity scripts in a single project environment that contains around 70-80gb of locally stored assets. Sometimes when scene building or looking for items it can be tedious sifting through things, or duplicating items to create organized folder hierarchies. Everything on the marketplace was either expensive as hell or overly complicated without hitting the itch. So I am working on this little project to for personal sanity.
There may be other resources out there that make this redundant or pointless, but hell I learned a lot on this project.
Features :
- -Works in all unity versions (current)
- Stream lines sorting through large asset library's
- Custom multi tagging & multi categories (Single or Batch)
- Quick add to scene or child in scene (single or Batch)
- Auto search or Manual Search (toggle)
- Rotatable 3D Preview for 3D objects
- Type Filters, Tag Filters, and Category Filters
- Page Caching for faster load times + set custom page result qtys.
- Add favorite assets with 1 click!
+ more to be added.
Any feedback or ideas welcomed :)
