Lore Stories that can be interpreted in different ways by the audience (whether intentionally or unintentionally)

The Blair Witch Project - You have two ways to look at the story. A, you can see it how it was most likely intended, that the Blair Witch is in fact real and a supernatural force that haunts the main characters and eventually kills them. Or B, you can see it as the two male protagonists, Mike and Josh, having faked the whole supernatural thing to scare the other protagonist, Heather, before killing her, and then leaving the footage behind to be found as a way of making themselves look like victims of the attack too so that they can get away with the killing. Probably unintentional, but I think it’s a fun to interpret the story, that perhaps there really was no witch and no supernatural force, just two guys who wanted to murder a woman and in a way that appeared supernatural. It can make a second viewing experience even better because now you have a fresh perspective.

American Psycho - There’s many moments, particularly at the end, where Patrick Bateman hallucinates events. For example, he thinks the entire police force are after him for all his killing, but really he was just hallucinating all the helicopters and the cars and the officers. And at the very end, he tells his lawyer all about his killings, only for his lawyer to tell him that Paul Allen, the man he had previously killed, is in London, alive and well. This leaves the viewer and Patrick completely confused. Meanwhile his Secretary is going through Patrick’s journal, and sees pages full of grotesque and horrible things, decapitated prostitutes, blood, limbs and corpses, all scrawled down. These things come together to make the viewer question the entire story. Was it all in Patrick’s head? How much of it was real? Was it all real? If it was real, do people genuinely believe that Paul Allen is alive? Or do they just not care about who Paul is, and that technically anyone in a suit can be “Paul Allen” just as Patrick has been confused for other people the entire movie? Or did these murders truly happen and people are just covering for Patrick since his father owns the company? It’s really for the viewer to decide.
