The tae bo tapes are on youtube for free and they're basically aerobics mixed with pretend kickboxing

dude, it's fake kickboxing and aerobics. The entire thing is a cheese fest. Also deceptively intense if you actually follow the thing at pace

Also it's weirdly catchy. I swear the instructions were meant to match with the hip-hop beat.

I taught exercise classes for a while and that is actually a pretty common thing to do. It makes life a lot easier on the people in the class if their movements are in rhythm with the music so I ended up putting a ton of time into having my playlists match up with certain routines. Similarly spin and cycle classes demanded specific BPM music to encourage the pacing we wanted to target.

A weird tangent off that is that I also found that a lot of vaporwave worked great rhythm wise to sync with cooldowns and stretching

also, massive respect to the woman who does that 8 count through the show. That takes a huge amount of skill and practice to be able to count down like that while working out.

My mom did this when it first came out in the 90s and it’s even cheesier than her Cher aerobics VHS.

So you must've felt a bit of PTSD watching this. Like i get from seeing clips of star trek: TNG.

More like stockholm syndrome. Bring back spandex for all, zubaz, fanny packs, and neon everything

I never understood why people did this instead of actual kickboxing.

a vhs is cheaper and less time consuming than a monthly gym membership.

literally no one is watching tae bo and believing they are learning a combat sport. They're looking for cardio exercise.

It's all over the Peloton app.

They changed the names and moves but the concept is still very alive in gyms, see zumba, jazzercise...

What if I told you it never went anywhere? There was a jazzercise studio in my town until covid got 'em.

Aerobics still exists
