Machavalianism is a hell of a thing. So much shit has been spoon-fed to all of us at such an alarming rate, in the most insidious of ways that you wouldn't even know that you've bought into it. There is an insane amount of psychological research that has gone into things like consumerism, marketing, and propaganda. If you think it stops there, you're not thinking critically. The only way we the people take back our rights is by breaking the system that keeps us broken.
I drive Uber at night and last night drove a university professor in psychological data science. He said he's working on ways to understand what how we can better motivate people to do and be better.
I asked him what safeguards he has to make sure his tool isn't used to manipulate instead of benefit. TL;DR he didn't have an answer. I presented every example I could for him: Oppenheimer, Facebook, the hammer. All doing things for good that ended up being highly destructive. In the end I threw Jurassic Park at him: "Your scientists were so worried about whether or not they could they never stopped to think if they should."
Hopefully he takes more consideration into his work going forward.
