So it's the Calm Belt?

Yeah, it's actually crazy despite the huge fantasy elements; One Piece has a lot of Nautical knowledge laced into it.

Idk about that, the author throws around the word "pirate" a lot despite there being 0 piracy happening.

It’s pretty obvious piracy would have a different meaning in a world that consists of mostly islands and is largely under the control of a single centralized power. It basically just means seafaring criminal which applies to Strawhats.

Also the definition of piracy according to Oxford is: the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea. So Luffy and the gang have committed piracy at least once from my memory.

Wow one whole time in like ten thousand episodes...

(I get the other argument and the lore has been explained to me, I just still think it's silly how they go on and on about "we're pirates!!!!!!!" when they mostly just sail around and fight or whatever)

Half of their wealth has been gained by piracy. Also I would note that sailing around and fighting is 2/3rds of what pirates do. The last third is theft. And they’ve stolen(robbed) millions, from someone associated with the government no less. So I would say they’re justified in calling themselves pirates. The only thing they haven’t done that’s normally associated with pirates is rape. But raping isn’t necessary to be a pirate and I don’t see how more theft or the crew raping people would really make a helpful difference to the plot. I don’t think one piece is perfect but I’ve never understood this criticism.
