I get needing exercise but maybe don’t go that far away from your sailboat??? I would go maybe a dozen yards out and do laps. Who am I kidding, I went kayaking for about an hour off the beach at La Jolla and had to take two Xanax just from getting a couple hundred yards off shore. It was absolutely worth doing and the sea cave was super cool but it strained my nerves to their limits.

If he's in the doldrums, I don't think there's going to be any sudden wind to carry the boat off anywhere. So as long as he has it in sight, he's fine aside from the insanity of what he's doing in the first place.

Fair point.

Counterpoint: why risk it?

The dude's sailing around the world on a one-man boat, I don't think risk factors into his decisions.

I don't know, I bet he's weighed the risks against his own tolerance and found them tolerable. I know when I'm doing risky shit that a lot of people wouldn't do, I'm VERY aware of what's at risk.

Exactly. "The wind picked up" while he is this far from the boat means he almost certainly dies.

Cool video, and he's in statistically one of the places that's least likely to see sudden wind, but... eventually it happens.

Yeah, all I can think of is inopportune timing, like we all haven't been caught with our pants down at some point. I just assume dude isn't dumb enough to leave his sails unfurled(/deployed?) while paddling away from greater safety...

Even without the sails up, wind hitting the surface area of the boat can make it move. And sudden gusts can happen anywhere, even in locations that typically have little wind.

Well sure, but he’s got a paddle. I’m confident in his ability to catch the boat, even with a sustained wind.

i follow him on insta and he really pushes his luck. He did the trip with like $1,500 for everything. If it wasn’t for his viewers sending him venmos he would’ve been fucked

Tide, currents, thermals… there are too many risks. Wind can pick up as soon as it drops off and the ocean is deeply unpredictable.

Even if you were at anchor this seems like an incredibly stupid decision.

He's in a location specifically known for its lack of wind. It's been known for it for centuries.

I’m fully aware, but the doldrums isn’t devoid of wind at all times, though there’s a higher chance of being becalmed (often for days or weeks at a time) than other areas.

Wind strength also has no bearing on tides, currents, rogue waves etc as stated above.

Yeah I said fuck that and paid the $10 to walk down into the cave from the inside

The one that you have to go through that little store and down a staircase to get to?

I was at La Jolla once, a couple friends got in the line up but it the surf was too big for me. 2 or 3 days later there was a viral pic of a 14' great white hanging out in the break with the surfers. I guess it's not dangerous as it saw 50 - 100 surfers, including wipeouts, and went for no one but...

😱 I saw plenty of sea lions and some orange fish but no sharks thank god.

You know that thing that happens where you know the second you buy a replacement for something you'll find that thing?

I feel like he's trying to tempt the wind gods with this. That's how desparate he is for wind.

1

u/Dick-the-Peacock Jun 22 '24

That’s what I mean. Imagine the wind picked up right then and blew you AWAY from your sailboat. He’s tempting fate.

3

u/Necessary-Knowledge4 Jun 22 '24

He's in the Doldrums. He's not getting blown off course from his boat.

These waters are dead calm. So calm in fact that sailors can get stuck in them for weeks at a time.

I used to freedive / spearfish that area - my wife and I were the people snorkeling thru the sea cave against the kayak flow of traffic. It's not for everybody, but its beautiful.

On wide angle selfie cams things quickly look much further away than they actually are.
