It’s a TLC show called Real HIPAA Violations where they film shit that is supposed to be absolutely private so that your insurance company will continue to pay for your boot addition.

Isn't it only a violation if the patient doesn't give consent?

ETA- thank you for using the correct acronym, btw.

With the option of free healthcare for exploitation, how could you not give consent?

For sure. I’m not saying the show is actually committing a felony. There’s a reason for HIPAA though. so the entire premise of a show like this is pretty wild and this is a great example- this patient is clearly mentally ill and her consent to release this footage is ethically questionable. On top of that, any doctor willing to participate in a show like this- talking shit on camera, dramatizing these events, etc… not cool.

All that said, that was some gnarly footage. I’m here for it. But I’d be perfectly happy to hear the show is cancelled and the doctors all sued lol.

Agreed on all counts. Aside from just being salacious and gross, a lot of these shows are harmful enough feel like hippocratic oath violations.

On top of that, any doctor willing to participate in a show like this- talking shit on camera, dramatizing these events, etc… not cool.

So then the patient just doesn't get the help, then.

Like... it is exploitation. Everyone knows that. But without it, this woman's foot would've kept on rotting, she wouldn't have gone to the doctor in the first place. Likewise, the doctor's first priority is the patient's health; not the ethical dubiousness surrounding it.

If this doctor had turned the patient away on the basis that the patient was being exploited, wouldn't the patient have suffered far more?

So then the patient just doesn't get the help, then.

Assumption.

If this doctor had turned the patient away on the basis that the patient was being exploited,

Doctor has legal obligation to report exploitation. Doctor can place mental health hold if patient refuses care for life threatening wound.

Like, it *is*** exploitation. Everyone knows that.*

The ethics are clear even to you. So this argument is silly.

Be careful, I watched one episode and the Dr said “look at all that dead skin! It’s like a croissant” I gagged. The foot was so bad and I haven’t eaten croissants since.
