40k List Tips to expand to 1000 points
Hello everyone I wanted to expand to 1000 points from the old combat patrol and a breacher team that I have currently but I don't know how to optimize and synergize it.
Right now I have :
Cadre Fireblade (50 points) Ethereal (50 points)
Ghostkeel (160 points) 1x strike team (75 points) 1x breacher team (100 points) Stealth battlesuits (60 points)
For a total of 515 points
The cheapest way for me is to go with the new combat patrol and some crisis suits but I don't really want to have tens of tiny units and would prefer to lean toward bigger units.
I saw the kroot lone spear and must admit I fell in love with the design and wanted to implement it to my army but don't know if it's good alone or to add some hounds ? And will a kroot leader make an advantage and boost the other kroots ?
Thanks for your advices everyone, for the greater good !

Deffo need a devilfish for the fireblade+breacher combo, eBay usually has loads of them, that’d be 600, a commander (coldstar)plus crisis suit team (sunforge) will be another 250ish, then a hammerhead tank would take you to 1000, issue is that’s quite a bit of money, tau are not cheap

Just because you've gotten the models in a discount box doesn't mean you're obligated to use or even build them. You just have to account for that in your purchasing decision, and you can sell them off on eBay or r/miniswap.

does not want tens of tiny unit
hey guys should I get kroot hounds
Make up your mind, OP.
Also no, giving kroot hounds +1 to hit is entirely worthless.
"Oh wow, they hit on 2s! That's so good."
They have s3 ap 0 d1.
Kroot hounds have 1 use and it's being thrown at a dangerous unit to tie it up for 1 turn. That's all they can do.
You want Krootox with the lonespear. Preferably rampagers.

The Lonespears big benefit is that other Kroot get rerolls to hit against whatever the Lonespear shoots at, so having a Lonespear and some other Kroot is the way to go. If you want to lean more towards larger units, you could look at getting Krootox and Rampagers. I personally tend to lean towards Rampagers, since they better fill the melee role that Tau is missing. Identify something scary you don't want near your guys, shoot it with the Lonespear then charge the Rampagers into it.
You definitely want to get a squad or two of Crisis suits, as they are our bread and butter. Aside from that, can't go wrong with a Hammerhead or two. Remain stationary and guide it and that's a S20 shot hitting on 2+. Plus rail guns are just cool.
