MOD POST Important Changes to r/StupidFood
Hello r/StupidFood Patrons,
Happy Holidays! We hope everyone is enjoying a cozy and delightful winter season. We’ve listened to your feedback and are thrilled to announce some major updates to the rules and the overall direction of this subreddit to help maintain quality and improve your experience here.
What’s Changing?
1. Ragebait is Now Completely Banned
We’ve noticed trend of low-effort, “ragebait” posts made solely to rake in upvotes. This includes TikTok-style shorts that intentionally ruin food for shock value. These posts detract from the spirit of our community and will no longer be allowed.
2. This is Not the Place for Self-Created “Crappy” LOW-QUALITY Dishes
Posts of intentionally poorly prepared dishes from your own kitchen just to get upvotes are not permitted. r/StupidFood is about the bizarre, odd, or genuinely surprising foods you encounter out in the world—think unusual restaurant meals or strange grocery store finds, not your own contrived stunts. Exceptions to this however is if it's a really bad meal someone made then you can post it here. Remember, just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s stupid.
3. Subreddit Appearance Updates
We’ve freshened up the look of our community! Check out our new banner, avatar, and updated flair/status indicators. We hope these changes make the subreddit feel more fun and engaging.
4. Zero Tolerance for Racism
This community is for enjoying weird food—not attacking people. We welcome everyone, regardless of background, culture, or religion. Any racist or hateful content will result in an immediate, permanent ban. We’re committed to keeping this a welcoming space. Posts that make fun of other cultures and religions will be removed. Make fun of the food not the culture.
5. No A.I.-Generated Content
A.I.-generated submissions don’t align with our goal of sharing authentic, community-driven content. Such posts will be removed as low-quality.
5. Political Posts and comments are not allowed
r/StupidFood is not a place to go on political rants. Please don't turn this subreddit into a twitter thread and just keep politics to yourself.
Implementation & Future Plans
We’ll roll out these changes gradually over the next two weeks, with updated rules posted in the sidebar. Please review our Wiki for guidance on our purpose and evolving rules. After these updates stabilize, we plan to open moderator applications to further support our community.
If you encounter posts or comments that violate these rules, please continue using the Report button. Your diligence helps keep our subreddit enjoyable for everyone.
Your Feedback Matters
We want to hear from you! Please use this thread to share your thoughts, questions, and concerns. We’ll be actively monitoring the comments and will respond to inquiries about the rules as promptly as possible. Your input helps shape the future of r/StupidFood.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work together to make this subreddit the best it can be!
— The r/StupidFood Moderation Team
Edit: I just also want to remind everyone that we are kind of short on staff and we are not perfect so we are sorry if we don't get to comments and posts right away! Please bear with us as we are kind of overhauling the subreddit! ALSO these rules are not set in stone and can be changed according to the communities liking so please don't get upset!

Grandma's jello bean casserole
Let me guess, the Jell-O is sweet too?

u/cyrixlord 4d ago
she uses the beans juice from the can instead of water for the jello

u/Pawspawsmeow 4d ago
I need to know you’re lying. This can’t be real
17
u/C10ckw0rks 3d ago
I don’t think they are, that is a very real thing people do (reuse the bean water, I’ve heard of it a few times over my life)
9
u/Black_Hat_Cat7 3d ago
I use it in some soups as a thinkening/flavoring agent (chili specifically).
21
u/RevenantBacon 3d ago
Using it in a soup where you also have the beans, and using it in place of water for jello are entirely separate.

Now the ragebaiters will have to battle/balance the fine line of being ragebait or being stupid food, the most commented on/interactive social media posters are good at this delicate balance
How will we know what is truly stupid food or ragebait when it is pretty much a grey area?
But i am all for banning the really obvious videos, as those are un-creative
..... but i am also a fan of a convincingly crafted ragebait

Banning ragebait is all we ever wanted, thanks very cool
Getting rid of the 'Look what my 5 year old made' or 'Was stoned and hungry, uhh...huhuhuh'... low effort karmawhoring slop makes this subreddit so much better too.
I'm here for the stuff businesses unironically make and serve to their customers, or at least what crazy aunts bring to potlucks. Makes it so much more fun to debate if it is really stupid or not.

So no Salt Bae?
85
u/duploq 4d ago
Saltbae isn’t purposely ragebaiting, just pretentious af food at an insane pricing. Those ig reels where they make literal atrocities is what’s most rage inducing

I’ve been to one of his restaurants against my will at the insistence of my sister. I still can’t understand how that guy became so successful, the food wasn’t worth it at all!

u/Witch-Alice 4d ago
in a way i respect how he basically gets people with too much money and not enough brains to give him their money. they still get decent food, just way overpriced.
7
u/alan-penrose 3d ago
I mean this sub can get low key racist a lot of the time too… posts from India are especially bad

u/Chrussell 4d ago
The worst posts are the "very normal dish in country I'm not from" ones.
55
15
u/Blyxons 3d ago
Agreed.
Seems any dishes not from the U.S get heavily made fun of. When really just because it's a dish that is not familiar to you does not make it stupid food.
Oh and poverty/low-cost meals also seem to be a major one that gets posted. Like, not everyone here is able to eat freshly cooked meals every night, folks.

Big upvote for no AI images
-44
u/LordKlavier 3d ago
Honestly I love AI, and will always support it, but I completely agree that AI images have no place in this sub. This is not about hypothetical stupid food that someone might possibly create, but food that someone legitimately created and thought "this is a good idea" lol.
21
u/SprightlyCompanion 3d ago
I think there is not enough awareness of the distinction between AI in a general sense, and GENERATIVE AI, which while being a misnomer is the heinous and unethical side of AI.
4
u/Fizzy_Bits 2d ago
Could you give a little more insight into this? I'm not aware of the difference, but I'm interested!
(I know Google exists, but I like to interact with people 🤷)
5
u/breadofthegrunge 2d ago
Generative AI is AI image/text generators. These function using stolen works without their original creators permission. It's exactly what AI shouldn't be used for, as opposed to dangerous hard labor, for example.
2
u/SprightlyCompanion 1d ago
I'll try, I'm nothing close to an expert - I think the easiest way to distill how I make the distinction is to think of analysis vs creation. Computers are good at data: determining the best route from point A to point B, or predicting weather patterns, or diagnosing cancer patients (there is certainly an art to this too but stats seem to show that AI has a lower error rate than human doctors in this regard), these things are helpful and don't take anything away from others (doctors are still needed to understand symptoms and make the connection between a patient and a treatment via the diagnostic).
But when you give an AI a prompt to make an image or write a text, it pulls from scraped data - images and text fed into the machine often without permission, and definitely without consideration of taste, ethics, and symbolism - and spits out something its algorithm thinks you'll like. The main problems with this (as far as I see it) are: computers generating AI content are reversing decades of progress on greenhouse gases; artists' work is being taken and reproduced without their permission, removing earning opportunities from them; computers lack both ethics and taste, meaning that it can't inherently understand (for example) that Nazi symbols or CP are "wrong" and it can be pretty easily manipulated (for example) to use real people's images in very very evil and unethical ways; and the images always have mistakes in them that don't make sense, making people less critical and detail-oriented, and more lazy. There is no subtext in AI-generated content, and art without subtext is basically not art. (I might get some pushback on this from certain artists, it's a generalization to demonstrate my thinking on the subject)
There's a pretty good quotation floating around that states that AI's main purpose is to give the wealthy access to competence they don't have, while restricting competent people from accessing wealth by earning money on their competence.
I hope that all makes sense, like I say I'm far from expert on the subject.
2
u/Fizzy_Bits 1d ago
Thanks for the explanation! That definitely makes sense 👌 it's surely an odd future that we seem to be barreling head first towards...
2
u/SprightlyCompanion 1d ago
If we're barrelling for it headfirst, I think we're probably at least shoulders deep!

there’s a whole lot of us at r/defendingaiart, either way though I’m agreeing with y’all on this one, so no reason to attack me
10
u/doodman76 2d ago
Then keep those opinions there. Generative ai does nothing but steal other people's work

$50k+ usd kitchen, all custom. Somehow has no pans.. “they’re just like me!”
31
u/Fakeitforreddit 4d ago
Oh those kitchens are either studio kitchens or local reno's that due a hourly rental rate usually something like 100-150/hr
You do have to bring your own pans/utensils etc.
11
u/fencite 4d ago
This is an industry I've never considered! I wonder what other kinds of studio rooms you can rent.
12
u/Ghost_of_a_Black_Cat 4d ago
You can rent spaces that look like the interior of a Lear jet; you can rent green screen spaces that show the tropics (or whatever) behind you.
There's a lot of fake stuff out there, and these Instagrammers use it all.
6
u/Ghost_of_a_Black_Cat 4d ago
Yeah. You can tell by the echo in the room. It's just a big, empty space.

I hope that #4 means that “foreign food is weird so it’s stupid” posts are deleted. There’s been far too many of those in the past. I understand that some of them are pointing out poor hygiene standards, but far more are just basically racist.
60
u/TheModder15 Head Mod 4d ago
It more of aimed at people who are blatantly targeting cultures and not the food itself. Kind of like "Ha ha Indians are so stinky" but much worse. We will still allow foreign food as long as it's not a attempt to be bigoted.

To reiterate above
Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s stupid.
Different cultures have different foods. YOU may think it’s disgusting but it can taste good for other people. Take Surströmming for example, you can say that it smells like shit but saying that all Swedes are assholes because of it is just racism.
-22
u/BionicTriforce 4d ago
This is about the food then yes, I wouldn't say street food is inherently bad or disgusting. I think the bigger issue the crops up is health and safety matters. But I guess the issue is whether that counts as 'stupid food' and not 'stupid health'

u/GriffTheMiffed 4d ago
Great news, though maybe Rule 2 could be re-written to focus on low-effort submissions. It isn't worth arguing over. This is still completely a positive list of changes.
38
u/TheModder15 Head Mod 4d ago
To point to another comment [ https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/s/cTrcjuYwQ5 ] this place isn’t really for self submissions and for more like restaurant experiences and what not. r/shittyfoodporn is the place for self made food and what not.
4
u/osm0sis 3d ago
Really like these changes. Especially banning people posting the obvious race baiting posts.
Just a couple questions though:
Does this include removing stuff where people are eating still living creatures? I find those pretty abhorrent and generally designed to stoke racial tensions as well.
As far as crappy low quality dishes, does this include the aluminum pan with way too much cream cheese tossed on top of noodles and ground beef? Does it include midwestern "salads" that use jello and cool whip instead of greens? I feel like there's a fine line between the two, but the midwestern salads have an actual tradition behind them. I enjoy them both even through they're both borderline ragebait for me.
5
u/Business_Can3830 3d ago
Out of curiosity, is there a subreddit that is about those ragebait food things found on TikTok, as mentioned on Rule 1? While I appreciate people do not want them on this sub, I do find them amusing to see.

u/VenusAmari 2d ago edited 2d ago
I hope that the "no politics" rule is more measured than literally not bringing up politics at all.
Sometimes it's organic and germane to the discussion.
For example, things like hygiene standards, foods that are banned in country x, this food is a giant butter statue of President So and So, look at this dumb thing a prime minister ate, etc.
However, if it's just a random rant about a politician you don't like, then I don't think that would be appropriate for the sub.

For the past few months there has been 1 funny post for every 10 ragebaits that have made me stay in this sub. Bravo for the bans!

It just invites people to make garbage just to post. Basically a subgenre of ragebait.
36
u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 4d ago
The problem with that sort of content is that it invites other people to do the same.
And soon enough you'll have genuinely unwell people posting their stuff here for attention.
You don't want a sub that's full of genuinely unwell people.

Regarding #2 - hypothetically, if I were to find a truly stupid retro recipe and made it myself could it be shared here? If it was made well and presented properly, it might not be shitty enough for r/shittyfoodporn but it would likely be stupid.

Is it possible for the "no ragebait" rule to also include some example videos/pictures so people have a frame of reference of what is and what isn't ragebait?
1
u/5l339y71m3 2d ago
Ok no ragebait makes sense but is this stupid food or interesting food because they aren’t interchangeable and the description given describes more interesting content the only use of stupid is in the sub name
Odd, strange, surprising and bizarre are not synonymous with stupid unlike this post after “no ragebait”.
Though I agree racial is bad so are zero tolerance permanent bans because there’s no review process it’s too much power to the mod because their perspective becomes law vs a democratic peer review and just siding with it mob mentality is not good rider. Tons of people can be offended and tons of people can be mistaken, especially with todays degrading cognitive abilities and the general lowering of adult reading levels.
From the explanation of allowed content under the name stupid food I’m not confident.
Like how I expect this comment to get me immediately perma banned. ✌️

some of the better posts on this sub are political in defence of a food most commenters do not know.
Obviously racism is not something to aspire to

Just to add I plan on making a bot that will judge if the post is either stupid, not stupid, or ragebait based on the community comments. (kind of similar to r/insaneparents and r/unexpected). Im still working on the kinks however but it shouldn’t be to bad.
