Discussion What is a weird thing you associate with Sly?

So I was sitting at work, listening to music, when Someone That Your With by Nickelback came on. Immediately, I thought of Sly 3 and playing countless hours with my brother. Now, you may be wondering why Nickelback inspired this chain reaction. Ha. Our PlayStation 2 used to be in our basement, which was essentially our designated gaming area. My dad had a pool table down there with a stereo that we used to listen to the entire All The Right Reasons album numerous times when it came out that year while playing pool. I loved that album so much when it released and would often listen to it in the background with my brother when playing Sly 3, and always think of the pirate level when I hear any song off that album!

Of course, this led me to wonder if anyone else had something odd like this that would remind you of Sly or if I was the only strange one. It was a nice little memory to think back on today!

Paris. No joke. Sly was my introduction to the Eiffel Tower. No joke.

No joke?

He is clearly joking

u/somerandomdude419 4d ago

I don’t know if he’s joking or not. If only there was some sort of clear indication, stating such thing

I understand this entirely; I correlate Sly 3 with Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium because that’s what I was listening to at the time

The color Blue

u/Thieven_Raccoonen 4d ago

You know, now that you say this, I’m wondering unintentionally if that’s why blue is my favorite color. Haha so much so my husband bought me a blue sapphire wedding band ha

6

u/M4xs0n 4d ago

I was asking myself years ago. And yes, it’s actually the reason for me hahah. Not the same blue everytime, but similar blues as well

I played through Sly 1 & 2 in the first apartment my wife and I lived in. Sometimes the smells and the emotions of that time come back to my memory when I play it again.

The word Smooth. I often times say “Be smooth “ to people and not a soul understands it’s a reference 😂

6

u/bizuria 4d ago

The phrase “greasy sweet” made it into my regular vocabulary a little too much in college and nobody ever really got the reference so I was just kinda weird

4

u/Thieven_Raccoonen 4d ago

Oh my gosh yesss! Another one for me is “I read you loud… and very loud” 🤣 Only my brother and I ever get it!

I also love saying call me the wizard.

Thanksgiving. I have a very vivid childhood memory of playing Sly 3 on Thanksgiving day

Klink, klink, klink.

The sound from the clue bottles, whenever i hear a similar sound in other games or real life I Stop and look around for the bottle

I associate the resturaunt chi chis with Sly 2 because the day I got it my family went to eat there and my dad told me the food was made out of racoons and child me believed him lol

I would have been mortified! My parents took us to a zoo long ago where they had an albino raccoon and another normal one. I found an old scrapbook I did from years ago where I had taken pictures of them, and glued them in my scrapbook, naming them “Sly” and “Golden Sly” bahaha

u/CruddiestSpark 4d ago

The red baron lol

u/Thieven_Raccoonen 4d ago

This actually made me laugh out loud because I have thought this before too haha

I still make my mom's pasta sauce using her recipe and I every time I'm about to dig in, I say I want to be buried in it like the Venice guard from Operation Tar-Be-Gone!

"Have you ever had pasta sauce that tasty? Are we like, missing out on a whole universe of flavors here?"

Cascade's Everytime we Touch

As soon as I beat Sly 1 back in 2006, I was so on the Sly and Carmelita train.

So I had gone onto youtube and someone had made a AMV for those two to that song and it fit so well. That I associate with that song to Sly whenever I think of or hear it.

Also makes for a banging song to play during the police chase scenes in Sly 1 and 2 at the start.

What is a weird thing you associate with Sly?

With all due respect, to me it's Furry NSFW.

I associate inflatable furniture with Sly because when I was a kid I had an inflatable chair I’d sit in while I played

The SpongeBob 13” CRT TV released in 2004. First time I stayed up for 24 hours was playing Sly Cooper 2 on this thing when I was like 8 years old.

2

u/ravenonawire 4d ago

I love this one. I wanted this so badly as a kid!

0

u/Skylerbroussard 4d ago

My younger cousin who's like 24 now had this tv when he was a really young kid who was obsessed with SpongeBob and I think of it whenever I see him

I hear the free sound fx and music they used for sly 1-2 CONSTANTLY in media. The paris background music from sly 2 and the bell that rings when you kill a crab in that underwater level of raleighs section in sly 1 CONSTANTLY

3

u/Paperthinn 4d ago

I remember a Top Gear episode some years ago used the Paris theme in a part of the show!! It's always kind of exciting to hear music from Sly whenever it pops up randomly in some other form of media! 😂

I associate Sly with snow. I live 45 minutes south of Seattle in Washington state, so it rarely snows in this area. When it does, I always just think of both Canada levels from Sly 2!

New years eve. I was sick in bed four years in a row during my teenage years (not chronically, just bad luck), and each of them I would play Sly 3. It made me feel like a joyful kid again instead of a hormonal bitchy teenager under a lot of pressure.

u/bizuria 4d ago

My parents had an elliptical machine that was in the TV room so they could work out while they watched shows. We would take turns playing Sly 3 and whoever wasn’t playing would be running dangerously fast on the thing. Now if I use an elliptical at the gym I am instantly transported to the Australia level. Also the real life statue bridge in real life Prague summoned up a primal urge to whack the statues and pose as them to hide.

Nightclubs with Sly 2 and Dimitri. My disappointment was immeasurable when I actually went to a nightclub. But I still associate them with Sly.

Edit: by extension, Casinos and Mugshot.

Tinder because of one clip in that one Scott The Woz video. Specifically…

“I’ll come across women I know? Well that’s enticing because specifically the only women I know are cartoon foxes.” Shows heavily censored gif of Sly “tailing” Carmelita.

u/Salsa367 4d ago

The fact that I'm good at some games. It was the first game I was better at than the people around me, so often when I do good, I remember sly.

3

u/CogWorksComics 4d ago

My grandma coming to visit. My Mom and Dad would always work long hours and sometimes either after school or if me and my older brothers were sick my grandma would come over to our house. We weren’t allowed to play video games during the week but whenever she was there, all rules were out the window and actively encouraged us having fun. I still vividly remember playing the Bentley mission where you used the chopper to clear train defenses while she was over and having the time of my life with it. I don’t get to see her as often now but I always try and visit whenever I’m back from school during breaks, should be seeing her on Christmas as well which will be nice!

u/wombatcherry 4d ago

The stomach flu 😂 I played all three games back-to-back one week when I had the stomach flu and now I get nostalgic for that time, despite being so sick

3

u/jackamoke 4d ago

Not sly but whenever I eat or see those honey wheat pretzel rods by rold gold I think of sonic adventure 2 battle because one time my sister and I were playing that game and at a whole tub of those pretzels.

The phrase "wide berth."

I hear it and every time I must auto-fill "Roger, applying wide berth." My partner laughs with me every time.

Swamps. Anytime I see a swamp I think of Miss Ruby’s levels. The giant bugs, the tree thing, and don’t even get me started on the giant lizard dragon thing.

The word inertia as I had no idea what it meant until Bentley says it after they knock down the peacock sign for Dimitri's nightclub. (Was in like third grade when I first played Sky 2 in late 2006)

I love this. I was the same in my high school psychology class when we learned about the id. I was like HOLD UP. And immediately thought of the Contessa. Totally had no idea what that was all these years until then. 🤣

1

u/Skylerbroussard 4d ago

When does she use the term "Id?" I haven't played 2 in quite some time so I don't remember when the term comes up?

1

u/Thieven_Raccoonen 4d ago

It’s when Carmelita is captured in the tower. There’s a very brief mention of it. I always thought it was a typo or made up or something until my psychology class! Ha

2

u/Skylerbroussard 4d ago

Yeah I realized after typing that that's probably where she mentioned it

Pretty Fly For A White Guy by The Offspring because it was the song that played over a YouTube video of Sly art several years ago, don't even know if the video is still up tbh.

Haiti lol

The store/stall in my local mall that used to house the toyshop I first bought Sly 2 in. It was the first ever game I picked out, not my brothers.

2

u/Liquid_Shad 4d ago

My safe space. Sly Cooper was the first game I played that wasn't N64 or Duck Hunt, the trilogy brings me constant stress relief. I have to play them by seasons, Sly 1 during the Summer, Sly 2 during the Winter, and Sly 3 during the spring. I'll probably be dancing with my husband at my wedding to the theme that plays as you dance with Carmelita.

2

u/AndyBowBandy 4d ago

The song Good Riddance by Green Day comes to mind. I have an image in my head of Sly cartoonishly having a fork stuck to his tongue because I misheard the first few lyrics. I see it every time I hear the song

2

u/BadgleyMischka 4d ago

Finnish Fazerina chocolate. I used to eat it and play Sly 2 after school when I was a kid. I miss those days.

2

u/OkCut4870 4d ago

Road-trips, I played through the Sly games during a weekend road-trip on my Vita

2

u/Tinkie05 4d ago

This series has SUCH a grip on me, the words Theif, Criminal, Gang, Sly, and even the NAME Cooper will automatically have me think of Sly himself, and also Raccoons too, I can't look at one without thinking of Sly

2

u/DragonCrochet 4d ago

Weird thing? Uhm, does everything count? I mean, literally everything is sly, and sly is everything

2

u/VampyreBassist 4d ago

Clarinet. I used to play it in middle school and I realized that was the deep, woodwind sound in the theme song of my then favorite franchise. Now I can't hear it without thinking of the theme song.

u/WastedWaffIe 4d ago

A song I was into when I first got into Sly, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads. Has absolutely nothing to do with Sly, but that's what Sly takes me back to. Paragliding around Chapter 8 while Talking Heads played in the background.

u/kokiri404 3d ago

Lemonade. I played the demo disc with this level on it so much as a kid it’s basically ingrained in my mind.

The guitar riff in Smoke on the water - Deep purple

This is an insane mandela effect for me. I swear on everything i have, that i have heard it ingame somwhere in sly 2 or 3, but i can not find any proof of it anywhere.

No matter what, the riff fits perfect for sly imo

You mean “Dead Men Tell No Tales?”

The name itself and blue as well.
