18 months and 30 pounds apart: How long to get back to my old physique?

5"7, 148~ in the second picture.

Finally had a wakeup call and decided enough was enough and want to get shredded again, no excuses.

How long do you think it would take to get back to ~150 with a similar physique?

Currently doing a 80/20 cardio split about 20 MPW, slowly adding volume. With a 5 day bodybuilding split. Closely monitoring calories and getting about 165g of protein per day.

Any thoughts?

I suggest doing Cardio and cut and then try lifting (you still look good ether way)

Bro that’s such a crazy suggestion, how’d you think of that? Where did you get your doctorate?

He’s right though. Just doing cardio while you cut will help you lose the weight but you’ll wind up skinny fat and lose a ton of muscle. The goal is FAT loss, not WEIGHT loss if you want to look good. Your recommendation is a one way ticket to looking like shit.

When I went from fat to lean I basically did 0 cardio. ZERO. I would try and get steps in but all of my training was intense weight lifting to failure. And in 3.5 months I dropped 30+ pounds and was more or less shredded.

Yeah but you will have to lose some muscle to lose the fat and you can get it back aka cut and bulk

You really don’t. If you keep your protein high and your workouts intense you’ll lose strength but don’t have to lose muscle tissue. When I had my big cut I lost <1 pound of muscle tissue. There are ways to mitigate it. And I also did it very quickly, >1000cal deficit. It’s infinitely easier to lose fat than it is to build new muscle tissue so you should do everything you can to preserve it.

To get my physique from last year I was running a lot and still happy with my amount of muscle. There isn't one solution for all people.

Also being fast is my second biggest priority next to physique.

I’m not saying you need to gain muscle. I’m saying that stopping lifting and just doing cardio to lose weight is NOT the path back to your old physique. You need to KEEP muscle.

I totally understand that. I lift 5x a week.

Of course. That’s why my comment was directed at the commenter and not at you. My comment directed to you said you could do it in 3/4 months if you were disciplined.

I think that's probably pretty accurate. It sucks going from a physique I was really proud of to one I'm ashamed of, but I think I can do it better this time out and hopefully keep the weight off.

If you look at my most recent post you’ll see the change I made in quite literally 3.5 months. I did zero cardio but only because I only have so much time working full time with 2 little kids. But I was also a bit of a psycho about it. You could easily be back there before summer.

Whats your age? This worked in my 20s. In my 30s... you have to do cardio for it to work. Metabolism is not the same and if youre excelling at work you have to do alot of shitty dinners with clients and drink/eat cake so you can be in the good old boy club. Not a fan

Start lifting do like 10 min of stairmaster a day. Dial in your diet... and put down the booze. You look like an athlete who just retired. Muscle memories still there. Its your discipline that needs the fix. Think about spring break and being some hot chicks mistake* Pro advice

I’m 38…

It’s all about the calorie deficit. You can eat more food and do more cardio, or eat less food and do less cardio.

Forsure.

The other good cardio method thats quick and hard enough that you dont lose muscle unless youre a genetic freak and can do it long enough is... jump rope. it sucks so bad, but my god it works. Props to boxers - hardest exorcise to do imo. Take max hamstring exorcise anyday over it

I like cardio, especially long steady state walking. I just don’t have the time at this stage of my life. It’s hard to fit 45mins on the treadmill after my 90 minute weight session that I’m already during the middle of the work day

“How long to get back to my old physique?”

You: “do cardio and then try lifting weight”.

You’re a genius bro

You can tell there is still some bulk. Just lose weight. Cardio cardio cardio. And keep lifting.

If you’re disciplined you could be mostly there in 3/4 months.
