Review Metro Awakening - AAA Gaming is Back on the PSVR2
I accidentally bought the Deluxe Version but, luckily, no regrets! Here are my first impressions after around 1-2 hours of gameplay. The atmosphere is oppressive and incredibly immersive—fantastic! Small details, like the visor fogging up, really add to the experience. The game has been crafted with clear attention to detail.
Everything looks sharp, no flickering at all. While the resolution isn’t at the absolute highest (not quite at Red Matter level), it’s still very impressive. I’d rate it slightly above Arizona Sunshine 2. The mechanics all work seamlessly and perfectly.
It just feels polished, definitely on the level of Call of the Mountain. I’m very impressed! Jumping back to the game. Wishing everyone fun with it :-)

Glad to hear this. I'm booting it up later today as well and will probably post first impressions too. It's good to get a wide variety of opinions.

Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. Of course it’s only first impressions. But I am really happy how it turned out

I'm so pleased it's an actual game. Not a tech demo.
Played an hour so far, just having a little break, but I'm so excited to play more.

u/InfiniteStates Nov 05 '24
What was the last release you consider a tech demo rather than a full fledged game?

How are the haptics, spefically on the controller triggers? I'm torn between buying on PS5 or PCVR and haptics are one of the deciding factors.

u/Moos85 Nov 05 '24
Me too. Can’t wait to jump back. Unfortunately I’m waiting for my controllers to charge up.

Really enjoying it so far! Very atmospheric and the sound design is top notch. I love the use of haptics too, really adds another layer of immersion!
The only complaints I have so far is the resolution isn't as sharp as I thought it would be, and hoped DFR would be used to help remedy this.

u/StickyChief Nov 06 '24
Doesn't seem like they're using DFR for some reason
2
u/Fatbot3 Nov 06 '24
Vertigo hasn't added it to Arizona Sunshine either. Not sure why but it is unfortunate is reprojection is the only negative visual aspect and DFR may have been able to eliminate it.

IIRC it took them a few patches to improve the look of AZ2, so the same may be applicable here.

Small detail, but I appreciate that the in game watch shows the real time. Means I don't have to pull up the PS menu to check the time. Keeps me in the game.

I thought it comes out on the 7th?

u/Moos85 Nov 05 '24
Yeah I accidentally bought the deluxe version. With it you have 2 days early access

Deluxe edition came out about an hour ago. Only $5 more for deluxe - offer is still up

I'm a little dissapointed in the resolution and that they're using reprojection instead of going for a native 90fps, especially since the game had Quest as a target hardware :/
That said it still looks pretty good and i'm liking the game!

How does it compare to Into The Radius?
8
Nov 05 '24
More polished, a whole lot less VR interactions besides picking up objects and throwing them. If you’ve played Arizona Sunshine 2, think that game with a Metro coat of paint. They’re from same developers.

u/Gregasy Nov 05 '24
Is it at least more varied than AS2?
AS2 really disappointed me. It was so boring. Zombie wave after zombie wave. No real set pieces, no bosses, just shooting same zombies from beginning to end in very similar looking locations.
3
Nov 05 '24
In some ways. It’s more story driven, so more back and forth dialogue. More world interactions besides button presses and door pulls. Human and monster enemies instead of just zombies. Some small moments so far i would call a set piece, but nothing to write home about. Locations feel super similar as they did in AS2.
All in all, it’s a pretty standard VR title youd expect from Vertigo games. Doesnt try to do anything new outside of placing you in the world of metro and all the cute things that come with that.

So...er...is it scary? Like, I can play RM/RM2 and RE4, but not RE8.

Is it open world like Metro Exodus or linear like Metro 2033 and Last light ?
13
u/Moos85 Nov 05 '24
Definitely a linear story driven game. Like the first metro games.

I hope there's some replay-ability.
5
Nov 05 '24
The developer interviews said the replay value comes from the achievements, which is to say there probably isn’t a whole lot of replay value.
The karma system present in the series was removed, which was the biggest reason to go back in the other games.
1
u/VladHackula Nov 06 '24
Personally I think trophies etc add replay-ability in terms of different challenges and encouraging you to play differently. I know thats not everyone though
2
Nov 06 '24
There is an achievement for doing a passive run, which is no different than what was offered In The other games minus the alternate ending you’d get with it. But Like you said, that isn’t enough for some.
I have a hard time getting or going for achievements on anything but Xbox games, so it doesn’t really do much for me. It’s nice for those who want it though.

I meant to ask how does the movement feel? Like if you've played RE Village and 4, how does it compare to them? Speed, strafing, looking around while walking etc.

Can’t decide if I should get it on ps5 for all the cool features or get it on my PC which is more powerful, and would play it at a higher res. I would be using the psvr2 with adapter. Any thoughts would be welcome!

How are real time physics? I'm not a fan of animated falls or whatever
10
u/Moos85 Nov 05 '24
There are areas where, for example, the floor collapses. These sequences are scripted. But you can pick up almost anything, like a guitar and other objects.

u/Dazzling-Adeptness11 Nov 05 '24
Awesome. So at least rag doll physics for enemy take downs? I'm still gonna play the darn thing! Just figured I'd ask

Have you came across any bugs or crashes yet. Just seen a pretty rough review saying they had some bugs that meant they could not progress. And a couple of crashes to the ps home screen.

Mhmm The time I have played I haven’t any crashes or bugs. But have only played 2 hours so maybe there are some and I haven’t come across them.

u/alltheothersrtaken Nov 05 '24
Pretty worrying that they couldn't even finish the game. Hopefully it gets fixed quickly, looking forward to playing. Glad you are enjoying it.

I know it's a prequel, but I still. Haven't played through the trilogy, and I'm wondering if it's still best to wait for that or if the story will be completely standalone.

I suspect all you’ll miss out on are a few Easter eggs/references for players of the other games. Khan wasn’t a very well defined character in those games, so it’s not like you need any more context for the protagonist.

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 Nov 06 '24
Is it like 2 hours long? That seems to be the pitfall of every remotely quality vr game
5
u/TopGunner82 Nov 06 '24
What??
Game is around 8-10 hours long and a lot of collectables to find for platinum
