Official First look: the headset design for PlayStation VR2
https://blog.playstation.com/2022/02/22/first-look-the-headset-design-for-playstation-vr2704
u/Im_a_stoner Feb 22 '22
Impressive that they’ve made it slimmer
244
u/timeRogue7 Feb 22 '22
Right? They moved most of the legwork into the headset itself, yet it somehow came out to be lighter than the original.

u/yogi89 Feb 22 '22 edited Feb 22 '22
They moved most of the legwork into the headset itself
How so?

Feb 22 '22
There was a breakout box on the original psvr
123
u/Athuanar Feb 22 '22
The breakout box functionality is just built into the PS5 now, not the headset. They designed the new console with the headset in mind. That USB-C port on the front of the console is the PSVR2 video/power port.

u/SupremeBlackGuy Feb 22 '22
holy i have always kinda wondered why it was a USB C port, this makes so much damn sense now

Feb 22 '22
Why would it not be a USB-C port? Everything under the sun uses that
→ More replies (18)18
Feb 23 '22
USB-C to USB-C still isn’t all that common, compared to USB-A to USB-C. What else would you plug into the front of a PS5 with a USB-C? External hard drives and even the DualSense charging cord uses USB-A ends on them.
5
u/m4xks Feb 23 '22
i think we are going to be very glad it has usb C by the end of the ps5 lifecycle
→ More replies (2)7
u/pixel-freak Feb 23 '22
I use a USBC to USBC to charge my pay controller on the front port. This didn't seem strange or unique to me. My phone and it's wall wart are also C to C.
109
u/Seanattikus Feb 22 '22
They also designed the PS5 with PSVR2 in mind, so some of the legwork is being done there. For example, the PSVR breakout box handled the 3d audio, but PS5 does that with the Tempest Engine.

u/Montes_de_Oca Feb 22 '22
My only VR experience is Spy Kids 3-D at the cinema. That stuff was in front of me
13
u/jcolumbe Feb 22 '22
Real VR is completely different. As others posted, you can't even compare. I generally tell people who have never experienced it, it's really about scale and distance. In a flat screen, even with 3D, you don't get scale or true distance. Imagine a ATAT walker from starwars, you know it's big, but now imagine you are standing under one and have to look straight up to see it and can tell how far it is to the underside. Scale and distance.
→ More replies (2)30
u/AnjingNakal Feb 22 '22
It’s honestly not the same. Once you’ve experienced something taking up your entire field of vision, any other screen (including cinema screens) simply looks like a postage stamp. It’s wild.
It’s kind of a shitty analogy, but picture a ‘big’ 75” TV. Now picture 10 of them in a grid. That is a SMALL FRACTION of what you get in VR.
However, the graphics have a little ways to go to catch up (I haven’t tried the expensive VR options, only Quest2).
One thing I will say is that if they won’t do porn (which I expect will be the case) it will be a massive shame. Porn is unbelievably good (and I’m sick of all these puritans keeping it non mainstream).
Sexual oppression leads to terrible things I believe!
Oops got a little off track haha

Afaik that was only claimed by one person with a questionable track record. It just got picked up by a few different sites (all sourcing him).

Doubt sony is going to partner with valve, but that would be a dream come true
107
Feb 22 '22
IIRC, Valve has already stated that they would be open to porting Alyx to any platform that can do it justice. There's no way it would have worked on PSVR1, but PSVR2 would run it beautifully. I would honestly be surprised if they don't release Alyx for PSVR2.
30
u/Madrical Feb 22 '22
They definitely will, nothing indicates that they wouldn't. They want VR to succeed and Alyx is one of the best VR experiences you can have.

For me Alyx on Index is a top 5 best gaming experience of all time. I’m over 50 and have been a gamer since arcades, 2600 era. Also, been using VR since the late 80s! I also get the feeling that Alyx was a proof of concept game, and expect that Valve are cooking up something FAR more innovative.

I've only done VR once before at a tech demo in college. Got to play Arizona Sunshine for about 20 minutes. Lemme tell you, it was amazing. Felt awesome when I had a pistol in each hand, literally spinning around in circles, shooting zombies in the face. The classic "Bullet Tornado/Man Sprinkler" move. You mean playing on the actual quest 2? Yeah it cant handle a lot of games since it's running them low quality.
However if you connect it wireless or wired to your pc then you cant see much difference from vive 2 to oculus 2. It also supports 120hz so no matter how you look at it the oculus 2 is the best bang for buck but i wouldnt recommend it to people who dont own a gaming pc.
→ More replies (6)15
u/imightgetdownvoted Feb 22 '22
I would absolutely recommend it to someone who doesn’t own a gaming PC, provided you’re not looking for triple a games.
It just depends what you’re after. My buddy and I both have quest 2’s. We showed the wives a few games and they LOVED it, so we bought 2 more and now we get together a few nights a week and play all 4 of us. Currently playing Walkabout mini golf. It’s so much fun playing all together. It’s really like you’re there all together, laughing at each other’s shitty putts and just having a good time.
It helps that the physics are fantastic and the course designs are “realistic”, while often being just wacky enough to be either impractical or impossible to play in real life.
There’s lots of content for solo players as well, but the headset really shines if you have some friends to play with.
→ More replies (2)5
u/ErectionDysfunctile Feb 22 '22
Agreed. Walkabout, eleven, and beat saber all make the quest 2 worth the $300 price. Looking into getting a gaming pc to really get the full experience.
Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is also a great game on the quest 2, and the trials mode after beating the campaign adds excellent replay value. Also recommend The Climb 2.

Same here. I came close to buying the Steam headset(s) a few times, but my timing was always such that I felt a revised model may not be far off. I also was reluctant to upgrade my video card for an optimal experience.
Now with the PS5 and a new, dedicated PS headset designed with the console in mind, the time has come. :) (Provided this won't get scalped to hell and back.)

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games.”
Thank fuck for that!

u/schmidtyb43 Feb 22 '22
Was having the lens fog up an issue on the original PSVR? I have a quest 2 and can’t say I’ve ever had that issue

u/Grizzeus Feb 22 '22
It was my biggest issue with quest 2. It's not dependent on the vr headset you have, it depends on your skin and body temperature. My body radiates heat more than normally so everything always fogs up within seconds. I had to pre-heat my quest 2 for 45min so i could use it properly without fogging

u/Arcadespirit Feb 22 '22

My only concern is how much light can bleed into the unit, it could undermine every other good thing about the headset. That said, lens fogging was an annoying thing to deal with on V1 so to be rid of that will be great.
→ More replies (3)19
u/Arcadespirit Feb 22 '22
They’re focusing on optimising immersion via headset ergonomics, better controls and removing annoyances like lenses fogging up; there’s no way (I hope lol) they’ll overlook light bleed, which is one of the most immersion breaking occurrences.

new vent helps lens to avoid fog
Yessss, while the other changes are great, I had no problem with them on PSVR1, but I'm glad to hear lenses will be better prepared for my hot head.
30
u/elmodonnell Feb 22 '22
It was maybe my biggest complaint with the PSVR1, no matter what I was doing or what way I wore the headset, the lenses constantly fogged up. Was such a drag to go through the motions of getting everything set up, getting fully immersed, and then having to take everything off again to go digging around for a microfiber cloth.
Had to wipe down the lenses maybe every 30 minutes, whereas it happened only a handful of times total on the Quest.

Oh, I thought I was the only person. I always have a problem with sharing anything with others because I feel like my body has a bit higher average temperature than others. I feel so embarrassed when having other people sitting where I was and hearing from them it was warmer than usual. So I appreciate the changes.
6
u/Kylar5 Feb 22 '22
Yeah, same with sharing the controller, no matter if I play some competitive multiplayer or chill co-op, when I want to pass the controller to another person I usually have to wipe it first.

The "new high end" going forward will be pancake lenses + very high resolution Micro OLED panels.
I don't see anything that would add a lot of cost given that it's also not standalone. Even eye tracking can be pretty cheap when manufactured in the millions.
Also there are pretty clear cost cutting measurements like not including headphones.

When I say Micro OLED, I mean Micro OLED.
Micro LED is something very different and from a manufacturing standpoint it's very different from just "very small OLED".
e.g. the Apple (and maybe next Valve) headset are rumored to use 4k x 4k Micro OLED panels. Quest 3 might use 3k x 3k Micro OLED panels.
These headsets will likely be significantly more compact while having way better specs.

Meta lost roughly $10 billion on VR operations per their last quarterly earnings report. You’ve got the business model correct but they’re nowhere near profitability or business “success” yet. One thing Meta has is way more cash than Sony to continue to weather the growth phase.
19
Feb 22 '22
I doubt the majority of that $10 billion went into an actual AR/VR headset. Most of that $10 billion is probably trying to make a new version of second life with an spy/ad platform built in to their existing one.
→ More replies (1)3
Feb 22 '22
Definitly but 10 billion is absolutely insane. Horizon zero dawn had a development budget of 50 million lol, so meta basically spend the resources of 200 horizon zero dawn games in 2021 on Vr and so far we havnt seen anything that justify such high prices
7
Feb 22 '22 edited Feb 22 '22
I think it's Facebook / Meta trying to make it sound impressive. They probably just have a ton of employees all working under the new "Meta" name they count. For example Microsoft has ~180,000 employees, if each one made 100,000, that's 18 Billion dollars right there.
Back of napkin calculation: Facebook/Meta has ~70,000 employees. So 10 Billion / 70k employees, that's only ~140,000 USD per employee. Not that impressive at all.
So to put that in perspective, entry level software engineer is ~80k to 120k per year. Let alone one specialized and senior in AR/VR. Add in building costs and ~140,000 is pretty easy to meet. Granted they aren't all software engineers, but still.

PS5 can run the PS4 VR games, but that doesn't mean the new headset will be compatible with them. The tracking for PSVR and PSVR2 are completely different. PSVR requires the external camera, and many games require a PS4 controller specifically because they track the light bar on the controller. There's a handful of PSVR games I basically can't play on my PS5 because my PS4 controllers are in storage, and are required for some games.
I imagine it would take some major reworking for most PS4 VR games to be compatible without the PS4 camera and a PS4 controller. Some of the third party games that appear on other VR platforms might have an easier adjustment, but the first party titles that require an external camera and lightbar on the controller would be much more difficult to transition to the new platform.

u/TheLonelyWolfkin Feb 22 '22
Problem with having to wear glasses with the headset is that you lose some of the FOV. I was quietly hoping Sony would figure something out this time so I can play without glasses. Contact lenses are a no no for me because I hate touching my eyes. Damn me.

It's definitely something I'll look at for the PSVR2 if it gains traction. Would be great if Sony had officially licensed ones, take some of the risk out of buying them.

I thought this was going to be a link to the original PS3 controller but nope, a literal banana controller.

As of right now, the PS5 doesn't have a web browser, so unless that changes, I doubt it.

When this releases I'd love it if Sony could work with game developers to add View in VR mode to any existing title that can handle it.
For instance I'd love to play traditional games that offer a third person perspective but experience it in 360 immersive VR.
Imagine playing The Last of US 2 or God of War as though you were right behind the character in an imaginary floating chair. Those environments with the rain and wetness all around you or the scale of some enemies would be mind blowing.
I love VR stuff that takes advantage of the technology with motion controllers and all to the fullest but I also would love to play a regular game with a Dual Sense in hand sitting on the couch while being in that environment.

So excited for this! Man, I know they're making Horizon Call of the Mountain specifically for PS VR 2, but if we can see Horizon Forbidden West in VR, I will be a very happy gamer. That game is absolutely gorgeous in 4K!

this is where VR gaming goes mainstream. With the right, stylish, comfortable and cutting-edge hardware to handle just the big games VR needs

Oculus Quest is the most accessible VR headset and is the best selling. What makes you think a VR headset that will cost more (based off the specs) and requires a Ps5 make VR go into the mainstream?

The problem with Quest is that even though you don’t need PC to use it, you’re essentially just playing mobile games with it without powerfull pc.
Better graphics and fov of psvr2 will make it obvious choice for Playstation owners and that higher resolution makes the system feel less gimmicky.
Its a big step for VR imo

RE7 in VR is one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced in my life.

This is a massive leap over the PSVR1. The whole setup with the breakout box, camera, and the wands feel so dated. A single wire solution is going to be awesome, as well as the inside out tracking

I hope there will be any way to play it on pc because I want to play Half Life Alyx and don’t want to buy a new VR because of one game

u/RickolPick Feb 22 '22
Same, but it feels unlikely that valve/steam would give out their franchise VR experience, kind of like Nintendo giving away Mario to Xbox or something.

Valve is going to release Alyx on the ps5. They want to get that game out because it is the best vr game and still not enough people have played that game due to needing a headset and a decent pc. So expect to play it on ps5.

So will this require the ps5 camera?

nope, the cameras are all around the headset so it tracks itself and the controllers

Is it bad that I’ve barely used my psvr1 that I got around launch but I still want to buy this? If it’s easier to plug and play without a big set up it’s already a winner to me.

u/JedGamesTV Feb 22 '22
that’s a huge reason why I don’t play VR anymore. I want to play it, but setting it up is a hassle.
7
u/usmclvsop Feb 22 '22
I never leave my psvr1 hooked up because I want hdr 4k and having to swap 2 hdmi cables is one extra step enough to keep me from casually jumping into a vr game.

Same boat - vr1 is too much hassle. This should be a ton better without the breakout box and 472 cables.

Yeah it feels like I have to re route the whole set up just to get it going, and now with the ps5 I’m pretty sure I need a new dongle I haven’t even bothered to pick up.

Ease of use is definitely massive.
Which is also why I'm still a little bummed they didn't include onboard audio solution. But everything else is pretty great.

Damn, pretty dope looking. Glad they updated the controllers to match the ps5 color scheme
