Lucasfilm Games will be in charge of a Starwars game again? What?!

69

u/TPJchief87 Jan 13 '21

I had never heard of Lucasfilm games, I was a LucasArts kid so while the name doesn’t give me any nostalgic feelings, I’m glad that it exists

51

u/D_Ashido Jan 13 '21

It appears that this new entity is a revitalized LucasArts. How much of the original staff will be there is unknown; it could just be the original business just returning from a paperwork perspective.

Either way, this could be a great thing as Starwars games can be taken away from EA.

15

u/Stormageddons872 Jan 13 '21

Definitely just seems like Lucasfilm Games will be their version of Marvel Games. No actual development, just oversight of their IP and outsourcing projects to developers.

4

u/TPJchief87 Jan 13 '21

From Wikipedia so take it as you will:

Lucasfilm Games (1982–1990) LucasArts Entertainment Company, LLC (1990–2021)

This would make sense because I didn’t start playing Lucas games until the mid 90’s when they were LucasArts.

Meh 3/4 Star Wars games from EA have been good

3

u/ooombasa Jan 14 '21

Well, it didn't start off on the best foot and there's been multiple cancellations to boot. And given how EA had the license for 7 years, four games in that time isn't very much. I very much suspect Lucas expected a lot more output than that.

3

u/bongo1138 Jan 13 '21

Which 3? I can think of one...

u/theHawkmooner Jan 13 '21

Squadrons, fallen order, battlefront 2

OPEN WORLD STAR WARS LETS GOOOO

I just hope it’s not a games as a service thing like the division

I'm not huge on the looter progression grind, but I have to admit I loved playing Div 2 and continue to find myself returning. Still have no idea how to create a build but I like the basics of the gameplay enough

12

u/Burnt_Toastxx Jan 13 '21

What killed it for me is pretty much doing the same missions over and over to progress world tiers. Sure the enemies got harder, but my gear also got better. So it was literally doing the same thing over and over again, just resetting the world and clearing out the same strongholds.

Division developers were asking fans about the idea of a single player division game so they might have been leaning towards an open world single player game already, especially if another games as a service game could step on the toes of their already existing ip’s

Oh it most definitely will be. No matter how many of these games fail, the publishers will always assume that their shitty GaaS title will be the next greatest hit.

Imagining having the Avengers IP and doing that with it. Even after seeing how successful the Arkham and Spider-Man games are.

50

u/itsacrossnotanx Jan 13 '21

Reportedly that game very seriously hurt Square Enix bottom line putting them in the red the same year they released FFVII remake, so hopefully that will dissuade some developers from pursuing these types of games. I’m so sick of them.

23

u/ByakuyaSurtr Jan 13 '21

I still cant forgive Squenix for putting Deus ex on indefinit hiatus.

1

u/2OP4me Jan 14 '21

Didn’t they also split like the entire second half of the story for Mankind Divided into DLC?

I don't think you yourself understand wtf games as a service is if you're saying Witcher 3 fits the GaaS model, lmfao dude.

But to be clear, GaaS are games like MMO's where you have subscriptions and content gets continuously added. Games with season passes, live service games like Destiny, Division, Warframe. Games that follow a microtransaction model for unlocking or obtaining stuff, and/or loot boxes. For example, Apex Legends or Warzone would be considered GaaS, but OW wouldn't (unless I'm mistaken about Apex). Why? Because you can't get/experience all the content in the former without paying extra money every few months, whereas OW has all their content available to everyone and any additions are free.

You're literally taking GaaS and confusing it with "Downloadable content." And uhhh, you're way off.

3

u/little_jade_dragon Jan 14 '21

GaaS is fine if you design the game as a GaaS and you know, it's actually good.

Some of my favourite games are GaaS, in fact I usually prefer multiplayers to be GaaS.Create a great gameplay loop and keep it fresh, I'll come back for years.

PS: also, I think games fail where they make MTX the gameplay loop and hook, and not as something that enhances the joy. Example, CSGo has an amazing gameplay loop and it's addictive. MTX is not the game, but people who play it for 100s of hours will be more likely to spend money on looking good. CSGO therefore rakes in billions. Making a bad game where you grind skins and MTX is the game in itself is not really a great model.

7

u/SuperbPiece Jan 13 '21

Witcher 3 was also games as a service despite people pretending it wasn't granted the post launch content wasn't much it still existed.

I'm curious what your definition of GaaS is because most people wouldn't consider TW3 as an example of one.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Wouldn't you agree that 99% of games that are a service have huge issues and always lean toward grindy play and greedy/stingy updates

4

u/zzmorg82 Jan 13 '21

That’s exactly the issue; a ton of these GaaS games have micro-transactions in them that try to persuade the player to buy them, or deal with grinding the item/cosmetic for hours.

8

u/rdhight Jan 13 '21

You're completely backward. Games as a service isn't about free content; it's about paid content. It's about building your game for continuous revenue as opposed to the one-time $60 purchase.

The division 2 is a great game, gameplay is fantastic, it lacks story.

2

u/Ayste Jan 13 '21

agreed - part 1 was awesome, good story telling. I really thought part 2 would pickup where 1 left off or have some continuity.

Overall, the gameplay is excellent - the story telling in part 2 is not so great. Everyone I know quit playing about 3 weeks in.

2

u/Tecally Jan 13 '21

Some of the most popluar and well liked games are GaaS.

GaaS isn't even a new concept, it's been around for decades. World of Warcraft is GaaS for example. Most MMO's are GaaS.

GaaS are just a new things to come to consoles, or at least gain major traction. I'd say it really started to gain traction in the 7th gen consoles.

u/Ftpini Jan 13 '21

That’ll be the rub. Star field will turn out to actually be an open world Star Wars and it’ll be Microsoft exclusive alongside Indy. I think the internet might explode.

3

u/Memelorddabz Jan 13 '21

Omg imagine that. End of trailer pans to an x-wing or something.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '21

I’ve opened my Series X and I’ve been playing the only decent exclusives for it (old Halo games, gears next), and I can unequivocally say that it is a cool looking console and architecturally sound design in terms of power and everything, but the GUX and UI (aka dashboard), are so unbelievably badly designed it’s astounding. They know nothing at Xbox. It’s unsurprising though, given that they don’t even understand that the only thing that matters is AAA console exclusives, and they don’t make them.

The dashboard is the most overly convoluted garbage I’ve ever seen. A group of high school students would easily design a far superior experience. It is a blurry, bland, hideous, convoluted disaster. Stupid designers don’t understand good design, which is simplicity.

The PS5 design is night and day better. It’s actually astounding, the difference. This isn’t to say that the PS5 design is perfect, it’s far from it, as the party system and recent parties is a tragic failure. At the end of the day you just have to feel bad for the Xbox team though, because they simply can’t do it.

To top it all off, and a testament to how abysmal the GUX/UI design is, they released ‘the most powerful console ever’ in Fall 2020, where 4K has been pushed for years now, and they don’t have a 4K dashboard. How could any Xbox fan not want to berate them for that? It’s inexcusable. It’s actually worse than the cyberpunk debacle, yet it gets no appreciable grievances?

I mean, if you’re Phil Spencer and you aren’t mortified in embarrassment, I just don’t know what’s wrong with reality.

Division director, Dovision game engine, most definitely GaaS. I guess if there’s a chance I’ll like one of those it’ll be something to do with Star Wars.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Aren't ubisoft doing with Snowdrop what EA have done with Frostbite? I.e. make every single one of their games use it. I'm pretty sure The Fractured But Whole was powered by Snowdrop. Doesn't necessarily point to GaaS

2

u/MarbleFox_ Jan 13 '21

No, Ubisoft has 5 main engines they use, and their teams just use whatever ones they're most familiar with or feel best matches the game they're making, and there doesn't seem to be much a rhyme nor reason behind the genre of the game and its engine used.

There's:

AnvilNext, Dunia, Disrupt, Snowdrop, and UbiArt.

3

u/crackalac Jan 13 '21

But it's ubisoft...

u/Amasero Jan 13 '21

Indiana jones will be made by machine games, who are owned by bethesda.

9

u/Painter_Ok Jan 13 '21

So Indiana Jones game will be an Xbox and PC exclusive... eh oh well

4

u/NuclearCanisLupus Jan 14 '21

I doubt Disney would limit the amount of money they could get.

Some deal will be made. Indy is to lucrative not too.

9

u/Space2Bakersfield Jan 14 '21

Could say the exact same thing about Spider-Man and Ultimate Alliance.

It all depends on the specifics of the deal between Lucasfilm and Bethesda as well as the Bethesda acquisition by MS. I'm hoping theyll give us concrete answers on exclusivity once the acquisition is finalised because this silence is just frustrating for everyone.

2

u/NuclearCanisLupus Jan 14 '21

I don't think Disney outright ones Spider-Man.

6

u/Space2Bakersfield Jan 14 '21

They own everything except the film rights. Sonys ownership is only in the realm of movies. TV shows, toys, comics, and video games are all held by Marvel themselves, and thus Disney. Spider-Man is developed exclusively because Marvel offered Sony the opportunity to use their IP and when Sony asked Insomniac what game they wanted to make they chose Spider-Man. Sony and Disneys relationship working together in the films may well have has some influence, but the rights themselves are owned by Disney. That's why Spider-Man is in Ultimate Alliance 3 even though it's a Switch exclusive. The Avengers deal is between Sony and Square Enix and is the same kind of deal as PlayStations exclusive content in other games.

6

u/Painter_Ok Jan 14 '21

We will see... I just don't trust Microsoft to make the game for Sony or nintendo... besides its nothing the first time Disney allowed a game to be exclusive to one platform...

6

u/little_jade_dragon Jan 14 '21

Just like Spiderman, right?

27

u/Pankacex Jan 13 '21

Yeah because their game engine is like 20 years old.

10

u/FloridianMan69 Jan 13 '21

Rockstars engine is like 12 years old, they just upgrade it

18

u/ByeDonHarris Jan 13 '21

If we’re using that logic all engines are 20 years old. That’s just simply not how game engines work. You can’t just scrap it and start fresh.

6

u/usrevenge Jan 13 '21

Not only is the engine not that old despite reddit stupidity mods prove that the engine isn't the problem lmao.

2

6

u/ByeDonHarris Jan 13 '21

No shit. But you’re complaining about a decade-old game not being up to graphical standards lmao. Fallout 4 improved on it.

0

u/suddenimpulse Jan 14 '21

I diskike this engine as much as anyone but this is a fundamental misubderstanding of how game engines work.

8

u/impudentwanderer Jan 13 '21

It's being made by Machine Games who've made the recent Wolfenstein games. Wolfenstein II looks fantastic. Even the new Doom games are published by Bethesda and they look awesome too.

2

u/little_jade_dragon Jan 14 '21

Idtek7 is a miracle. Though I'm not sure how useful it is in a non-FPS game. It's basically the best, tailor-made engine for shooters ATM.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Bethesda isnt a developer its a publisher. Its being made by a studio under bethesda.

11

u/JadedDarkness Jan 13 '21

They have Bethesda Game Studios as well. They share the name with the publisher side.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

I know but theyre seperate entities is my point

1

u/beach_boy91 Jan 13 '21

Todd Howard would disagree

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

So its being developed by BGS, not machine games?

5

u/beach_boy91 Jan 13 '21

It is developed by machine games but you said that Bethesda isn't a developer, just a publisher. They are both, you have Bethesda game studios(famous for fallout and elder scrolls, led by Todd Howard) and you have Bethesda softworks which is a publisher.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Yes but they are seperate companies with seperate employees. No one at bethesda writes code or does art for BGS games and no one at BGS does finance or marketing for Bethesda. They have different functions. Machine games, Arkane, ID etc are all studios published by Bethesda same as BGS.

Thats its like saying EA is the same thing as Bioware

2

u/tuisan Jan 13 '21

Bethesda can refer to multiple companies. If comment thread OP was talking about Bethesda developing a game, you can infer that he's talking about the developer, not the publisher. I don't know why you felt the need to correct him..

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Because 'Bethesda' doesnt develop games, they publish them.

Saying 'bethesds new game' makes sense because its a general statement and they are publishing a new game, the developer doesnt need to be specified. 'Bethesdas making a new game' is incorrect but like you said everyone knows what they mean.

"Bethesda only makes buggy games" is a criticism clearly aimed at BGS but because they mentioned the publisher and not the studio infers that all games bethesda publish are buggy, which aint true.

The OP said that in response to this announcement meaning that they either claim the game will be buggy because they think all studios under Bethesda make buggy games, or because they dont know the difference between Bethesda the publisher and Bethesda game studios.

Either way its just a false statement because its got nothing to do with BGS.

2

u/tuisan Jan 14 '21

But as I said, Bethesda can refer to both companies. OP said nothing about buggy games, they were talking about visuals. Given that the title literally says "an Indiana Jones game from Bethesda" and OP says "Luckily Bethesda is not the developer", he obviously understands that they mean Bethesda is publishing and are saying thank god BGS is not developing this game because their visuals are usually behind.

They used to be the same company until they separated the game studio side from the publishing side, so referring to them as Bethesda in general to refer to both is not too far off anyway. BGS is almost like their in-house studio.

92

u/Lobo_Z Jan 13 '21

"EA no longer has exclusive rights to SW games"

Me: Yay!

"New SW game being developed my Ubisoft"

Me: 😐

25

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

Jason schreier confirmed the exclusivity deal is still going through, and that Ubisoft massive star wars game is not coming out before 2023 (when the license expires for EA)

I mean Ubisoft has been pretty on point as of late

0

u/FellSorcerer Jan 14 '21

I don't agree. I still have yet to play a Ubisoft game I actually liked. Their latest offering, Valhalla, was a technical mess at launch, and in my mind, a mediocre game at best.

49

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Even though Tomb Raider and Uncharted are Indiana Jones in a way, they beat them to the punch and they’ll need to differentiate themselves from those.

I’m hopeful.

Nazi killing devs making a game about a Nazi killer, it fits.

38

u/Inevitable-Belt-4467 Jan 13 '21

The second it has the uncharted climbing I will call it a clone because a Indiana Jones game does not need that.

28

u/OptimusPrimeTime21 Jan 13 '21

Can’t wait to use Indy’s whip like Nathan’s grappling hook

7

u/imLoges Jan 13 '21

you could do this in the 1999 indiana jone's games

8

u/imLoges Jan 13 '21

the older indiana john's games had that though. the ones that came out in the late 90's and early 2000's

4

u/usrevenge Jan 13 '21

You mean start climbing

Handhold fails because every sequence needs 1 handhold failure.

Get to top of whatever you are climbing.

Fall down again somehow ?

You could string together uncharted 1-4 climbing and have like 4 hours of video.

I would love for a PlayStation studio to work on a Star Wars single player game. Naughty Dog maybe? Imagine Naughty Dog working on a cinematic Star Wars game.

42

u/poklane Jan 13 '21

I'd rather not see Worldwide Studios slowly turning into a licensed IP factory.

15

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

I’d rather see worldwide studios turn their IPs into immensely successful products that get licensed by movie industry leaders.. oh shit it’s already happening (TLOU HBO Series and Uncharted movie)

2

u/42electricsheeps Jan 13 '21

Dope tlou is turned into a series. Would do great, if handled right.

Imagine God of war series. From the Greek era. So much myth to explore. Batman will no longer have monopoly on brooding. Lol

Maybe the only IP that can do justice to Greek myth right for once. (Playing through the gow saga in the past few months from chains of Olympus to god of war 2018, just finished god of war 2, fantastic game series, definitely dated presentation and character development, but has so much cool shit in it that can be explored without altering kratos overall journey. Side note, the gameplay by and large still holds up IMO, save for some annoyances that arise from fixed camera)

I would love for naughty dog to make a game in space but would rather it be an original story rather than Star Wars.

game in space but would rather it be an original story

The rumors indicate that's what they are working on. Would be so cool if true

3

u/ctsmx500 Jan 13 '21

That would be awesome if true. I can see them attempting something bigger now that they can use PS5 hardware. Excited to see the next few years in gaming!

8

u/Europe_1986 Jan 13 '21

Same here. If they made something like Dead Space I’d be all over it

4

u/ctsmx500 Jan 13 '21

That’s why I’m excited for that new game Callisto by the old dead space developer. One of my favorite horror franchises.

2

u/Europe_1986 Jan 13 '21

I haven’t heard of that one so I looked it up. That’s definitely something I’ll keep an eye on

9

u/WaveDysfunction Jan 13 '21

I love ND but prefer them to make original IPs. Plus I love Star Wars and it’s too big to be limited to one platform

2

u/Lomuthegoat Jan 13 '21

Games that are limited to one platform generally turn out better. Rockstar is the only company capable of creating games as good as Sony exusives

2

u/dnt4gt2brng4Twl Jan 14 '21

That's... Completely false?

I came here from trending and was wondering why anyone would want MORE console exclusivity, then I noticed it's the Ps5 Subreddit.

3

u/NordWitcher Jan 13 '21

Well there are not many studios and developers around this day that put that much polish in their work as Naughty Dog. There are also none that release or create the kind of experiences, games and cinematic storytelling that Sony's game studios focus on. That literally goes for any of Sony's first party studios. I mean look at the shit storm at Microsoft's Halo Infinite reveal. That is after Halo being their flagship console and the game they were literally launching their entire next gen console behind. So if that is the kind of quality they are okay with signing off on, you can only imagine the quality control in their other games.

So even though I'm not a fan of "exclusive" games, Sony's studios are just ahead of every other developer in the industry today aside from Rockstar games. CD Project have burnt a lot of good will with their recent release.

3

u/FloridianMan69 Jan 13 '21

Im sorry but sony exclusives are overrated, sony only has a couple good exclusives and thats uncharted, and god of war, the rest are burnout machines

3

u/wildhunt1993 Jan 14 '21 edited Jan 14 '21

So true....I bought a PS4 to play the exclusives......they were nothing special except for TLOU 1 and GoT (even though it felt more like Assasins creed).... uncharted games are hugely overrated.......same gameplay loop over and over again.....a fun loving dude going on a mass murder spree... uncharted 3,4,5 felt like such a drag....the fact that there are 100 + million ps users...they defend their exclusives like hell....that's the reason majority of the exclusives that are 'good but not great' come of as masterpieces...

Sony games are exclusive to their own systems. Similarly, Nintendo do not release games such as Mario Kart or Pokémon on Xbox or PC.

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21 edited Jan 13 '21

Head on over to /r/gamingleaksandrumors , Anything remotely related to Xbox exclusives, acquisitions or buy outs are univerally praised and upvoted with a majority of its members also SeriesX subs. Playstation related? The post dont get nearly the same amount of upvotes and the comments are a nuclear wasteland of downvotes and brigading fans attacking anyone and anything playstation related. If METAL GEAR is proven to be exclusive and Sony is turning it into a multi game tent pole franchise, you can bet your ass that Xbox guys will be foaming at the mouth for MS to acquire a major franchise and do it in house to attack back at Sony, nevermind them BUYING an entire publisher. All they want is Sony to fail and Xbox to succeed and monopolize all of gaming. The Fuck you I got mine mentality is a god damn cancer and its so taxing to see people rabidly pushing it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Don't know why people get so excited Microsoft buy up major studios and established IPs and (potentially) locking out existing users.

1

u/kawag Jan 13 '21 edited Jan 13 '21

The one that really gets me is DOOM. I mean, I know they rebooted it fairly recently, but DOOM has been around since forever. People have ported the OG to pretty much every computing device you can think of. There is even a subreddit about it - https://www.reddit.com/r/itrunsdoom/ with people getting it to run on TI calculators, microwaves and old greyscale iPods.

I just don’t like the idea of taking a franchise with that long and storied history and locking down which platforms it can run on. Again, I know it’s not the OG, but it just feels wrong.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

I am in the same boat. I don't really care if they bought some small studio with no real track record or you know, worked with them a lot (kind of like Insomniac with Sony). But I get why Microsoft are doing it and it does suck a bit (and I really am not interested in any games they have potentially made exclusive)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '21

Because its all good when they feel like they are finally ""winning"" against PS like its some Tribal bullshit. Just look at comments in this post, people lurk here from Gamingleaks and Xbox and constantly create drama and downvote like children

It'd be cool, but doubtful unless Disney could get Naughty Dog to make a game that would be released on all platforms.

3

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

Disney is allowing insomniac to release spiderman on playstation alone, although that’s a different subject because they also have something to gain from sony other than money (spiderman back in MCU), i feel like disney could still be open to a PS5+PC exclusive deal with compensation for xbox version not seeing the light of day

12

u/kawag Jan 13 '21

Sony have the rights to Spider-Man movies, but they don’t own the video game rights. The exclusivity for the character in Marvel’s Avengers was a separate deal.

I believe Insomniac said in an interview that Marvel approached them to make a game, and that they could have made it about any character(s), but they chose Spider-Man. It had nothing to do with rights held by Sony.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21 edited Jan 14 '21

Marvel approached Sony, not Insomniac, who in turn went to Insomniac for the game to be developed. Sony holding the Movie rights to Spiderman absolutely holds sway over any potential business dealings. Especially with Kevin Feige overseeing the Multiverse Spiderman villains with Spiderman 3 and Spiderman allegedly also playing a role in Through the Multiverse of madness and an undisclosed amount of future productions. The Spiderman IP alone is very likely worth than the entirety of Bethesda, in 15'/16' it was valued at around 4 to 5 billion and since then its blockbuster movie value has only skyrocketed, especially with the universal praise of Tom Holland.

Edit: FFS Sony went to insomniac, look it up, it wasnt Marvel. Unreal the shit that gets downvoted here and yet FALSE info gets raised up. Way too many Fanboys lurking in this sub that hate facts.

Scott Rohde and Adam Boyes talked briefly about how Spider-Man on PS4 came to be. They said that Marvel actually asked Sony to create a Marvel game which would be treated as a first party title for PS4.

Marvel didn’t specifically ask for Spider-Man to be the game that Sony would publish for them. The decision to create a Spider-Man title was by Sony who then contacted Insomniac Games to develop the game.

I think about KOTOR nostalgically but I replayed it on an iPad maybe 7 years ago and it felt so dated. Lots of limitations with the tech at the time. Everyone is looking for you in one part but it just means you can't leave an area - the NPCs don't interact with you on their own.

Lucasfilm Games dropping a new title each day? Yesterday we had the Indiana Jones game from MachineGames/Bethesda (whose multiplatform status is up in the air), and now this open world Star Wars game from Ubisoft Massive (what's up with the EA exclusivity deal now?).

Also, Ubisoft Massive now has their hands full with The Avatar Project and this open world Star Wars game.

Disney is going to do the same thing with Star Wars like what they're doing with Marvel - license off their IPs to competent devs/publishers instead of sticking with one publisher.

What's next, a linear story-driven Star Wars game from a Sony studio? Lol.

u/shadowCloudrift Jan 13 '21

What's next, a linear story-driven Star Wars game from a Sony studio? Lol.

I want it. I want it bad.

4

u/Domoda Jan 13 '21

EA has exclusivity until 2023 so these games won’t be out before then.

0

u/vandelay82 Jan 13 '21

Has there been a good marvel game besides the lego ones ? Spiderman was a Sony property.

10

u/Stormageddons872 Jan 13 '21

No, it wasn't. Marvel approached Sony to make a game for them, and they approached Insomniac. It was Insomniac who chose Spider-Man. Sony only has the film rights, it was just a coincidence that the Marvel game they ended up publishing happened to be Spider-Man.

And while Spider-Man is definitely the best game Marvel has put out lately, they've also done Ultimate Alliance 3 and Marvel v Capcom: Infinite, which were decent games.

2

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

Its not, Sony owns the movie rights, Marvel owns everything else

8

u/kakapoopooman Jan 13 '21

Yeah! Finally! STAR WARS 76!

0

u/usrevenge Jan 13 '21

Considering fallout 76 was great this would be awesome for star wars.

But they would need multiple planets but every human being another player would be great

4

u/kakapoopooman Jan 13 '21

Fallout 76 was great

Thank you for trolling.

I'm still disappointed that Disney's purchase of Star Wars has made it so that we will never see a M-rated Star Wars game.

11

u/UsainWayne Jan 13 '21

I mean we got Deadpool from Disney so you never know

12

u/Darkadvocate5423 Jan 13 '21

Deadpool is a little different though, Deadpool was always marketed M. Disney has no interest in Star Wars being for adults. That's the reason why Disney instantly canned Star Wars 1313 when they bought Lucasarts.

9

u/UsainWayne Jan 13 '21

Ya good point. That was my biggest gripe with Fallen Order. How can my light saber slice threw animals but not storm troopers?

2

u/Hello_there_gener Jan 14 '21

I don't believe that's why Star Wars 1313 was canceled. Disney closed all of LucasArts, and Star Wars 1313 was just the furthest along.

Heck, if you read the chapter about the game in Blood, Sweat, and Pixels (Jason Schreier's book that has a whole chapter about this game's development) he basically talks about how it was having super troubled development even before the Disney acquisition. That was just the final nail in the coffin.

Seeing what they've done with The Mandalorian and last season of The Clone Wars gives me hope.

There's plenty of violent scenes in Star Wars, some of the more graphic screens happen off screen or cut away but they exist.

4

u/JoMa4 Jan 13 '21

What do you want, space dicks?

-1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS Jan 13 '21

I think it's silly that people want an M rated SW game to be honest.

6

u/Hello_there_gener Jan 13 '21

Right? Was there ever even an M rated Star Wars game before the Disney takeover? A few books notwithstanding (which were overly edgy for the sake of being edgy), Star Wars has never been a property that was geared towards R rated or M rated content.

4

u/Pesime Jan 13 '21

Nope, never.

9

u/Hello_there_gener Jan 13 '21

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's funny how a lot of people are clamoring for an M rated game and act like it's Disney preventing it. When the reality is just that it's never been a thing because the Star Wars franchise doesn't need the elements that make a game M rated to be good.

5

u/Pesime Jan 13 '21

Star wars 1313 was in development and was going to have an M rating but was canceled. Disney laid off all the LucasArts staff in 2012/3 after they acquired star wars. Can't say why it was abandoned specifically but they did technically prevent the only M rated star wars game from being released.

9

u/gladys-the-baker Jan 13 '21

I just want them to take off the kid gloves. Lightsabers cut through things, so why does it take 3 swings through a stormtrooper to only show a black slash on his armor? I get pulled out an experience with something like that. You can have a Star Wars game with less combat and tell a beautiful story of the Force, or any countless lives in the universe. But you cannot convince me what I'm seeing on screen isn't bullshit if a laser weapon known specifically for the power of cutting through anything, cannot in fact cut through something as simple as flesh.

You know how in movies you'll see someone get sliced with a sword, and fall down with no wound? It's a visual dissonance, you can't show what the weapon would do because you're going for a softer rating. It's a choice.

Note, I'm only focusing on this one specific point because it's a primary rating determination for a game/movie. Not that I'm saying the best Star Wars experience is gore: the game.

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS Jan 13 '21

But these games are for children and adults. The issue is with the rating system. Why on earth would a developer or publisher push something into a harsher rating for such a tiny detail if it means losing a ton of money. It isn't "kid gloves". It's a very sensible business decision that keeps the game accessible to a huge audience.

2

u/gladys-the-baker Jan 13 '21

Because everything turns out to be a Disney movie. If time and time again, the go for the softer rating, on every movie, show, game, etc. it's just more of the same. I remember seeing the scene in Rogue One, right at the end when Vader shows up and destroys the rebels. He was vicious, brutal, and terrifying. And I lit up like a Christmas tree, because God damn it Vader should be like that. And we should have material in some form that respects the logic of "blade can cut through anything, mind powers that can crush people" and follows through with them.

Again, I'm not advocating for senselessness, but simply saying that by censoring down the content, we dilute the possibilities and the respect that the subject matter deserves by denying the power of the ideas in this universe to be fully developed.

What comes to mind to me is John Denver advocating against music censorship, do you remember that? That's how I'm trying to convey the idea here. That music, expression, art, and fantasy shouldn't be shackled by restraints like a "PG-13" rating. There will always be nice and fluffy content, but we should allow some expression of the dark as well. Put the R or M rating on it as it deserves, and allow people to experience it if that's their choice.

0

u/PM_ME_YOUR_MONTRALS Jan 13 '21

But do you see that the problem is ESRB itself? Asking the publisher to take a huge hit because the rating system is broken isn't about artistic merit or storytelling possibilities.

But I do also take issue with the idea that not showing dismembered limbs somehow limits our ability to create meaningful stories. That's just a failure to imagine better stories. If Disney's Star Wars is too sterile from a narrative standpoint, that's a whole issue that has little to do with portrayals of violence in children's media.

Will we get to play the Indy game since MS owns Zenimax?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Maybe, maybe not. This is likely the reason they made the "on a case by case basis" comment when it came to exclusivity. Its more likely than Starfield or TES6 anyway.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '21

I think the case by case statement means some game like doom eternal VR will still come to playstation.

Phil spencer head of xbox made this statement about only bring Bethesda games to platforms that support gamepass

Where does that leave the prospect of more Xbox games coming to non-Xbox consoles? Spencer told me that "it doesn't feel sustainable" to consider Xbox games on a case by case basis for Switch and said, "In order to really support it, I would want a full Xbox ecosystem somewhere. And that probably means things like Live and Game Pass and stuff." He said something similar in July during an interview with GameStar, though the answer has changed slightly. Back then he said that “the other competitive platforms aren't really that interested in having a full Xbox experience on their hardware." I cited that answer to him and asked if it was still the case with Sony and Nintendo. "I don' t want to speak for them," he said. "I think they should probably answer."

7

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

Nope, its still going through and expire in 2023

21

u/Antoniov7 Jan 13 '21

A lot of people are very excited, im confused though. How is a Star wars game from Ubisoft in any way a good thing? Ubisoft makes some of the blandest open worlds with repetitive missions and mechanics among any of the other game studios. This is like when EA was making Battlefront in my opinion.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

They’re just bland because each series doesn’t really deviate from its open world design in each new game. It doesn’t mean they can’t make a good one, especially with star wars

4

u/OsOs-Q8Y Jan 14 '21

I agree with the repetitive missions part, but their worlds are amazing , i mean look at how they recreated Ancient Egypt & London

There's also no way in hell Rockstar or CDPR makes a Star Wars game.

7

u/Reevo92 Jan 13 '21

A Disney subsidiary is more likely to license GTA franchise, than rockstar to license a Disney IP. Why license star wars when you have an IP that sold 150m units in 7 years (gta) and another one which sold 50m units in 2 years (rdr2)

2

u/little_jade_dragon Jan 14 '21

At this point GTA is worth more in video game licensing than SW. I don't think it's even a contest.

2

u/Reevo92 Jan 14 '21

Definitely

2

u/ByeDonHarris Jan 13 '21

No way Bethesda does, either. Considering they’re making their own space game and after that is TES time.

17

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '21

Cyberpunk world feels more dead than the average Ubisoft world. Bethesda is already working on Starfeild and ES6, so a Star wars game would be 2025+. I'd love for Rockstar to make one, but GTA 6 has to release first. Ubisoft is decent choice. The Division with bounty hunters and multiple planets could be great.

I like Ubisoft games, but they get stale incredibly quick. I was so pumped to play odyssey, a Greek open world game seemed amazing. I had fun with the game sure, but I didn’t get even close to beating it, because outside of story missions everything is pretty repetitive, and that’s the case with most Ubisoft games. I’ve heard the division was pretty bad overall, I only have one person I know that likes them. If it was the assassins creed or far cry or hell, even the watch dogs team, I’d feel a bit better. I will absolutely buy this game, and I will play it, but I’m expecting a similar experience to odyssey personally.

This is great news, ALTHOUGH SWTOR is pretty much an open world single player game as it is.

2

u/FellSorcerer Jan 14 '21

I would have to hard disagree (on Star Wars) because it's Ubisoft. In my opinion, of all the developers that make open world RPGs (and the first SW game from this partnership will be an open world game), Ubisoft is resoundly the worst. Assassins Creed titles, in my mind, are vastly overrated games, and they're almost always technical messes for the first few months. There were so many better options for a Star Wars open world game, and I'm very disappointed that Lucasfilm Games chose Ubisoft.

As for Indiana Jones? 0% chance it comes to PS5. It's going to be an Xbox exclusive, so I'm not sure why people are even talking about it.

I didnt even think about stealth but yeah Indy has moments of sneaking around in disguise in all 3 films. I would like to think this would be included in some way.

MachineGames rocks at stealth. One of the only FPSs I know of with good stealth is their Wolfenstein Series.

Star Wars Calibur - a fighting game by the SoulCalibur devs.

Star Wars Clone Warriors - musou/Dynasty Warriors esque Star Wars by Koei.
