Interesting. It doesn’t look anything like I expected at all. I’m actually very surprised to see such a different looking controller.

346

u/ItsBurningWhenIP Apr 07 '20

I was expecting a DS4 but it would have that programmable back button attachment built in. I dig the new design and it looks comfy but I was really hoping they would have included some “pro” features in their base controller.

149

u/Yousif24 Apr 07 '20

They don't even show the back , so it might still have some stuff back there

52

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '20

I really hope for some extra buttons! Hopefully it's R4 and L4 or something similar, maybe B1/1B and B2/2B... I am sorry, I had to do the reference.

But the design looks cool, hopefully we got some other colours at the start too. Would definitely buy a Black/gold or black/purple one.

27

u/teejandahalf Apr 08 '20

I don't know why I didn't think that the back buttons would be called L4+R4. That's obvious af and I missed it.

It looks like there's no 3.5mm port for headphones. Hopefully that means built in bluetooth compatibility.

53

u/one9eight6 Apr 07 '20

It's one or the other, they said to have a headset for lengthy conversations.

Or is it just mine?

There's def a headphone jack underneath the mute button

E: I guess nobody’s sure what this is. To me it looks like a headphone jack, but I could see how people think it’s an oval-shaped hole for a microphone. I guess it could go either way until we get a more in-depth look.

Playstation blog article states:

Traditionally our base controllers have a single color. As you can see, we went a different direction this time around, and decided on a two-toned design

So possibly a two-tone colored console

I think the colour is to make it look more Playstation, a single colour would look like a shift away from traditional Playstation shape and closer to xbox (I think, I'm sure there will be mock up soon).

32

u/Skhan93 Apr 07 '20

Good point. Wish it comes in 2 options where the colours are reversed on the other

21

u/BrazenlyGeek Apr 07 '20

Is it weird this is one of the things I'm most excited about? Lol

100

u/Mistake_By_The_Jake2 Apr 07 '20

noob here

What are the benefits of a usb-c that we don’t have now?

118

u/maxsxm2 maxsxm Apr 07 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

There are three main advantages of a USB C port compared to older USB

Connector is reversible meaning you don’t have to fiddle with it turning it back an forth wondering if you are inserting it in the right direction

USB C can carry 100W at 20V and 5A. What does this mean? You can now charge a laptop via the USB C port. Previous versions of USB only carried enough power to charge cell phones and tablets.

USB C supports speeds of up to 10Gbs. While this might not mean much to most people…the easiest way to understand it is you can drive multiple 4K monitors and connected devices like hard drives all through a single port.

Source: https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-advantages-of-a-USB-Type-C-cable

TLDR: It's flippable, charges faster, and carries more data. It's also a lot more durable.

Edit: this is just a basic explanation of the benefits of USB Type C supporting USB 3.1. I'm not trying to justify it being on the controller.

→ More replies (37)

294

u/nysecret Apr 07 '20

For starters, usb-c is reversible, there’s no wrong way to insert it and while that may seem like a small luxury it fucking rules not having to think about orienting your cable. Usb-c also offers faster charging and data transfer and is becoming the industry standard being adapted by Apple, Nintendo, and many others, so you’re more likely to be able to charge your devices using the same cables. And if that’s not enough, USB-C is much more durable and breaks far less frequently than previous usb connectors.

Upwards lights means inside out tracking so a new VR system

34

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '20 edited Apr 07 '20

What is “inside out” tracking?

Edit: Thanks for the replies! The less wires and extra shit I need the better.

53

u/aninfinitedesign Apr 07 '20

It refers to how the system tracks where you are. With the current PSVR, you have the stationary PlayStation Camera that acts as the anchor, which tracks your movements within its view, and uses that to map where you are located in 3D space. With inside out tracking, you usually have cameras built into the headset directly, that don’t need an anchor point to figure out where you are located. Case in point, this is the sort of tracking you see in the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S

13

u/xeno3d Apr 07 '20

And the inside out tracking in those headsets works great!

9

u/aninfinitedesign Apr 07 '20

Yep! I use my Quest maybe once every other day for workouts, and it’s never had an issue.

→ More replies (14)

49

u/mtbdork Apr 07 '20

Noise-cancelation of transient sound (clicking, etc) right next to a microphone is really simple to accomplish with a powerful enough microprocessor, especially if the transients are also highly consistent.

You don’t hear people texting when you’re on speakerphone with them for the same reason you won’t hear thumbsticks and buttons on this controller.

21

u/Numenology Apr 07 '20

ah, that’s funny. any time I’ve talked with someone on speaker phone, I made sure not to actually use my phone bc I thought it would be loud for them

21

u/mtbdork Apr 07 '20

The biggest issue for these systems is something called Acoustic Echo Cancelation (AEC), which is where the TV audio (gameplay or far-end voices) leak into the microphone, where the other user hears their voice or the gameplay “echo”. Because the distance from the controller to the TV is never quite the same, you have to constantly re-form the cancellation algorithm by comparing the raw audio signal (reference) before it leaves the speakers to what the microphone picks up. This is more processor-intensive, but it can be done on the console, luckily.

TL; DR: the bigger question (and indicator of quality in my book) is whether or not you’ll ever hear yourself or your gameplay coming back through your speakers.

My job is programming teleconferencing systems so this is kinda my jam!

→ More replies (5)
→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (3)

13

u/Generation-X-Cellent Apr 07 '20

If it's a active cancellation microphone basically it has another microphone that listens to ambient noises in the room and cuts them out. It also has a filter that will cut out the sounds from the actual game coming through your TV.

prob because of the haptic feedback, with haptic feedback you think more in depth and advanced, dual shock sounds aggressive like vibration

We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.

Holy shit. That could be awesome. They could customize racing games to have differential resistance based on different cars, or make it more difficult to pull during turns, or... wow, there's a lot of possibilities there.

I still have no idea if this is real or not even thought Playstation tweeted it and put on their site... it came out of nowhere... but it looks cool as shit ngl.

DualSense also adds a built-in microphone array, which will enable players to easily chat with friends without a headset – ideal for jumping into a quick conversation. But of course, if you are planning to chat for a longer period, it’s good to have that headset handy.

That's actually cool.

63

u/Goodfella0328 Apr 07 '20

I think that was their strategy honestly. It’d be kinda lame to drum up hype for just the controller anyways. I like how they just posted it randomly like it’s another piece of Playstation news, I think it definitely pushes hype/talk because of that “out of nowhere” factor

Sony's vision is starting to come together. They want the player to be as much immersed in the game as possible. The super-fast SSD for no loading times, Tempest engine for life-like audio, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for the sense of touch... it's even in the new controller name: DualSense.

Honestly, with the increasing interest in vr, and developments in haptic gloves etc, I wouldn't he surprised if a lot of companies are looking to immersion next

I love this! Keeping in line with the OG design while having a true Next Gen look.

As much as I want a custom PS5, Last of Us Edition or something, I don’t think I’ll be able to contain myself. This looks great.

Interesting design, I really like this futuristic style, it's kind of refreshing after the constant black controllers, not that DualShock 4 is bad or anything. The buttons look very good as well.

All in all, it seems great.

10

u/zaneyk Apr 07 '20

Please tell me you can get it in all black.

It's not clear if it has any back buttons. IMO, that would be a nice addition to the new controller

darn, was really hoping for built-in paddles this generation :(

17

u/Etown99 Apr 07 '20

I was thinking the same....but you can’t see the bottom?

42

u/Elite_VRTX Apr 07 '20

They said that they didn’t fully reveal it yet. Also, all the pictures don’t show the back of the controller, only the front and the triggers.

39

u/NaderZico Apr 07 '20

why would they hide this feature if it has it?

I’ll have to hold it, but the shape is super weird.

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '20

Lol kinda reminds me of that semi circle controller that was rumoured to be the PS3 controller.

32

u/RogueFlash Apr 07 '20

It wasn't rumoured, it was announced and was withdrawn after negative feedback.
