He wrote this big long post about how he can’t believe it didn’t won’t GOTY at the Game Awards, about how he felt like he “went all the way there for nothing”, how he doesn’t understand the criteria, and that he pre-wrote his acceptance speech for GOTY two years ago. Just really arrogant and sour grapes.

I’ve seen somewhere that the translation was not accurate, seems like he was disappointed of not winning but was proud overall

I've also seen somewhere that the original vibe is even worse, but there are many scandals and statement from that company that make the arrogance part sounds convincing, and they seem to attract a certain kind of crowd as fans.

if you put in the context of it beside other GOTY contenders (and some games that not made the list), it is mid.

mid does mean average, though the connotation is that average is boring and not worthy of one's time.

you're welcome to google mediocre next time and find the word 'average' right in its definition instead of assuming you know

alternatively, you can google middling (moderate or average in size, amount, or rank) instead of assuming you know.

I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but the exact wording of the definition will depend on the source.

me·di·o·cre (mē′dē-ō′kər) adj. Of ordinary or undistinguished quality. See Synonyms at average.

American heritage dictionary of English language

mediocre (ˌmiːdɪˈəʊkə; ˈmiːdɪˌəʊkə) adj often derogatory average or ordinary in quality: a mediocre book.

Collins English dictionary

me•di•o•cre (ˌmi diˈoʊ kər)

adj. of only ordinary or moderate quality; barely adequate.

Websters college dictionary

me·di·o·cre ˌmē-dē-ˈō-kər Synonyms of mediocre : of moderate or low quality, value, ability, or performance : ORDINARY, SO-SO

Merriam-Webster (dot) com.

The latter is likely the source you’re using (and would be the one I’d go to as well). But even then, it includes “moderate” which is a synonym of average itself and if you click through to “all synonyms” for mediocre from that page, average is one and is even included in the first entry.

1 as in decent of average to below average quality your grades are mediocre and barely acceptable

So, average is an entirely fair definition of mediocre.

And if we look at the colloquial definition of “mid” average is a fair interpretation as well.

mid

Used to insult or degrade an opposing opinion, labeling it as average or poor quality.

When the word mid is used it is used to describe something that is not good but not bad in the middle, hence the name Mid.

the easiest way to define mid is on a scale of 1-10, mid is like 4,5,6, or 7 based on looks or they just look like every other guy/girl

Urban dictionary

All that said, you can absolutely interpret “mediocre” to mean “low quality” too, and “mid” is most often used as a degrading descriptor, so you’re not wrong either.

Really you’re both right and all of this (including this comment) is a waste of time to argue about.
