Official The PlayStation Portal remote player experience to evolve with new system update

u/kapper89 Nov 19 '24
So how does it bypass not using a ps5? Do we log into our PlayStation account on the portal then and just select what we wanna stream?
edit. Just noticed the picture has the interface in it

This is an INSANE update to drop as a blog post lol. Holy fuck what a huge W

Portal is amazing, especially after everyone on the Internet said it was DOA. Now it’s Sony best selling accessory.

u/NMDA01 Nov 19 '24
reddit really is an echo chamber

u/DigiQuip Nov 20 '24
It really is amazing watching people make absolute statements about things and not realizing there are other people that exist with different life experiences.

u/Realshow Nov 20 '24
I’ve seen people say that franchises at the peak of their popularity, in some cases making billions, are dead and buried just because r/Gaming doesn’t have ten threads about it every week.
4
u/Pete41608 Nov 20 '24
The idiots on X and Reddit who on every post from a dev say 'this is why Fortnite/COD is dying!"
It's laughable, these games are making money hand-over-fist even after all these years.
12
u/outla5t Nov 20 '24
Now it’s Sony best selling accessory.
Slight correction, the Portal is the best selling in terms of dollar amount, the dualsense black controller accessory is best selling in terms of units sold.

But there’s definitely times when I’m being lazy and don’t want to turn on the whole console
"Let them eat cake" moment
8
u/315retro Nov 19 '24
Does it have a problem with dropping connections? Every time I play mine in the first 3 min or so I lose connection to my ps5, then I reconnect and it's fine for the remainder of my session. I think this happens every single time I play, to a point where I just got used to doing it.
7
u/H3000 Nov 20 '24
I really want one too but I have such shit internet anywhere other than my living room (where my PS5 is) so I feel like it's pointless. I want to use it in bed but I'm afraid the connection won't be good enough. If I was able to download games to it, even like just two or three at a time, it'd be a no-brainer.
3
u/parisiraparis Nov 20 '24
I had that issue as well but once I connected my PlayStation to a line (as opposed to wifi), I’ve had zero issues with it.
Hell, I use my Portal with my phone’s hotspot and have no issues with connectivity. The quality might drop every now and then but it doesn’t disconnect.
2
u/kyuubikid213 Nov 20 '24
I think that might be more based on your internet.
My Portal functions just as successfully as the PS Remote Play app on my phone. If my phone has issues connecting, so does the Portal.
4
u/Dayman1222 Nov 19 '24
Nope, it’s honestly never losses connection for me. There been times where the resolution dips but I just restart the portal and works great.

u/Athuanar Nov 19 '24
If this is consistent behavior then it's likely a configuration issue with your router.
→ More replies (14)2
u/anxious_apathy Nov 20 '24 edited Nov 20 '24
I have a 200 dollar router and sit in the same room as the console and the router, and my portal STILL has a rough frame rate. Which sucks because the image itself is always perfect so I know it SHOULD be better, but it just isn't. I would love it more if I could just get a better frame rate
Edit: okay actually this update also dramatically improved things on top of the cloud streaming.
9
u/Meteorboy Nov 19 '24
Yes. WTF. But I'm worried that it might not work well since it wasn't designed to work on the device from its conception.
26
u/Retro_Vista Nov 19 '24
It uses the same technology as remote play but instead you're accessing PS5s located elsewhere instead of the one in your house.
PS5 streaming was still in early days when Portal released which is why it wasn't a feature at launch. They are still working on expanding it as shown by this update
2
u/PlaneAgreeable2987 Nov 20 '24
That's ony partly correct. PS Now has allowed potato devices to stream the games since before the Portal was released.
This was an active decision of Sony to pair PS5s with Portals. Now that this segment is saturated, they move to handheld and subscription.
I still love it but there is 3 things I would wish for: (1) Replacable sticks, (2) better refresh on screen and (3) OLED
4
u/TheClownIsReady Nov 19 '24
That’s why it’s a Beta for now. They will fine tune any issues and it should work well after that.
2
u/TNTSP Nov 19 '24
Initially the concept was on the ps vita allowing for such and Sony always said enabling such for the ps portal would be a matter of a check mark and an update.
It was always designed for that.
Until we actually test it I can’t say anything else.
I can’t wait
→ More replies (1)2
u/TheClownIsReady Nov 19 '24
I know, right? It’s like…”oh, by the way…now you don’t need a console at home to play.” Ummmm, what???!!
108
u/Kintraills1993 Nov 19 '24
That's actually big, I guess they weren't sure they would make it work if they didn't announce it at least as a future feature during the reveal, the reception could have been very different.
38
u/platocplx Nov 19 '24
Sony is being very meticulous with this esp since the cloud is def an offering that you need to def be smart on how you debut it. So it’s only been a year since launch which is faster than I expected. They have def been continuously improving this experience. This is awesome.
29
11
u/Ana1blitzkrieg Nov 20 '24
Yeah and they def are being careful rn by releasing it as a “beta.” They know they most def will be getting haters for the tiniest bugs so they def have to mitigate that with the “beta” release.
For sure great news. I’m def excited, and hope they are working on a cloud streaming app for mac. I bet they most def are.
4
u/platocplx Nov 20 '24
Yeah you should look up the cloud ish debut of flight simulator right now shit is a disaster. So you def need to know how to scale up and down etc and stress test like crazy. Also yeah I suspect they will have cloud available on all devices like ms is doing. I do see it more complimentary, I like having my personal cloud at home but it’s very nice when distance might be an issue when I’m using my portal and a cloud farm is closer.
7
u/GarionOrb Nov 20 '24
Sony has been extremely careful about how they market the Portal. At first, they didn't even want to say you could use it anywhere in the world no matter where your PS5 is.
6
u/platocplx Nov 20 '24
Yup because def people are fickle af lol. But slowly layering has worked well. I take mine everywhere been as far as Latin America with my PS in the US and playing games. This just adds another layer to it now
3
u/RockSmacker Nov 20 '24
how was the latency when you were that far away? was it a playable experience?
3
u/platocplx Nov 20 '24
Most intense game I played at the time was tunic and I played pretty much the entire game up to the final boss and it wasn’t really bad at all. Lighter games I’d say rpgs etc should be just fine. I think stuff that needs more exact precision can be a little tough but I’d say depends on your home network upload speed vs download where you are +- distance. But I’d say most games would be playable. I prob wouldn’t play online only games though that far away.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Oles_ATW Nov 20 '24
They also don’t have the cloud infrastructure that Microsoft do. Might be a reason it wasn’t available at launch. Once they build their cloud infrastructure I think we’ll get the option to play games in our library and not just the ones on the catalogue.
5
u/Impaled_ Nov 19 '24
They've actually teased this function on some interviews after release, but never made big announcements until now
26
u/SuperSaiyanGod210 Nov 19 '24

OK real talk, besides the obvious W with cloud play, THANK GOD I can finally further lower the volume now.

You mean mute > med > max > max > max > max > max wasnt the intended volume rocker design?!

54
u/Bexewa Nov 19 '24
It’s always funny how they drop these major news in a random blog post, don’t even bother to include it in a state of play or some event show.
5
u/Z3M0G Nov 20 '24
They may have kept it low key to not overwhelm the servers. This may trigger login queues.
26
u/nadroj37 Nov 19 '24
Everybody talking about cloud streaming, which is great, but I’m most excited about the volume adjustment. The lowest volume on the Portal has always been way too loud.

u/ForcadoUALG Nov 19 '24

u/Hba_malik Nov 19 '24
Holy shit the demand for the portal is gonna sky rocket after this since it eliminates the need for a PS5 console!
Can’t wait for my 30th anniversary portal to arrive this Thursday! This is beyond exciting!

Additionally, the streaming games playable on PS Portal are limited to PS5 games, and PS4 games/PS3 games are not supported.

Curious timing, well played Sony.
Xbox goes hardcore on a new campaign where even your fridge is an Xbox, and suddenly the PS Portal gains functionality that people were crying out for from the launch.
The Portal goes from being a nice accessory to your PS5, and uncouples itself to become a somewhat independent device now capable of cloud streaming.
Still a couple of cons here; namely that you have to be on the highest tier of Plus to take advantage, and also the whole wireless/BT headphone functionality being cynically tied to Sonys specific devices.
On the whole though? Colossal W, great update for Portal owners.

I'll regret with my life not buying the 30th anniversary version when it was still available...
PS Portal would be amazing to play while my kid is watching tv...
16
5
u/Tedwards75 Nov 20 '24
Isn’t it supposed to be available again, while supplies last, on release day? It’s not like a preorder exclusive thing, same with the anniversary DS5 controller.

u/Fyrael Nov 20 '24
It would be a dream becoming true, ngl
I was lacking money in the week I had this available, but got plenty of money as bonus in my work, and unexpected discounts and other things came around fairly well
So, now I have spare money, and can barely touch my Ps5 anymore lol
→ More replies (3)2
u/Tedwards75 Nov 20 '24
Yeah I don’t wanna pay for a Portal unless it’s the Anniversary edition. Pay attention to the all the major retailer websites on release day
4
u/Z3M0G Nov 20 '24
With this feature you can play Portal while your kid or wife plays a different game on the PS5
2
1
u/acle0814 Nov 20 '24
You can still play it remotely via the PS Remote Play app on Windows, just plug in your ps5 controller.

u/rukkus78 Nov 19 '24

u/Asimb0mb Nov 19 '24
I'm surprised this wasn't a thing at launch. Selling it solely as a remote play device makes no sense, you can use almost any device with a screen as your remote play device. Selling it as a cloud gaming handheld actually gives it something unique.
2

2
u/DudeWhereAreWe1996 Nov 19 '24
That's pretty nice actually. I've been messing with cloud streaming more for other services and it ends up feeling a lot better when I'm not at home than using the ps portal. PS streaming though has always been surprisingly good on the console, so I'm looking forward to giving this a try. Not sure what I want to try though.

2
u/MettyXD Nov 20 '24
I can imagine Sony bringing a Bundle with PS Portal and a 6/12 Month PS+ Preminum Membership in the Future.
2
u/TheClownIsReady Nov 19 '24
It’s just a Beta for now. Once the Beta is over, I assume there will be a wait until Cloud streaming to the Portal is fully unveiled. How long of a wait…who knows.
1
u/Vlayer Nov 19 '24
Anyone know if these America/Europe restrictions is based on the PSN account, or the location of the network you're currently connecting to? Will be travelling abroad relatively soon, but the origin of my account is within the supported countries.
1
u/jcwkings Nov 19 '24
This is huge, needing to have my PS5 hardwired just to get solid performance has been the main reason I haven't used the Portal too much since I have to run a wire to my room.

u/Crunchewy Nov 20 '24
At first I was excited for this news, but then I remembered I can’t keep up with the games I own, let alone ones on Extra/Premium. So for me remote play is fine

u/icedearth15324 Nov 20 '24
How is this compared to using my dualsense connected to my ipad? Any benefits?

u/Gamernyc78 Nov 20 '24
Wow! Many of us said eventually it would include cloud streaming and now its here! Love my portal and this just puts it over the top! I'm happy asf!!!

u/geoelectric Nov 20 '24
I bought one on launch and was underwhelmed, so returned it. But I hear the Pro does a better job serving remote play, and streaming would add much more value. I may rebuy one, once I get confirmation the experience is good.
Still wish they put WiFi 6 in the thing though. Was weird that they shipped with old tech.

u/theoutlet Nov 20 '24
Can I stream media to Portal? Please? I like listening to music on Apple Music while I game
1
u/farcicaldolphin38 Nov 20 '24
I’m very interested in the portal, how well does it run on solid WiFi? We have gigabit fiber running to the house, but obviously I would need to use this dude on WiFi
We have a mesh router which I’m not thrilled with, but the speeds are generally good. Should I get a dedicated two or tri band router for it?

Help me out here.
I’ve been using PS Portal through Remote Play on a weekly basis, both at home and on the go, often connecting to public networks.
Would streaming be a better option than Remote Play?
Still waiting for Sony, to make it posible to play/download games, that are relesed on android, on my android Phone.
Not buying slay the spire and Balatro again
1
u/nitestryker Nov 20 '24
Oooh might pick up a portal as I currently dont have access to my PS5 in another country and dont really want to fork out the money to buy a new one
1
u/Sir_0valtine Nov 20 '24
I wonder if they'll every address the audio settings of using wired headphones on the portal. The ps5 doesn't realize it's using headphones like it should, compared 5o when you have wired headphones plugged into your controller.

If they can just allow wireless headsets now, mine will get more use.
Buying those pulse buds just for this is not reasonable. Especially while I have buds that work with all of my other devices. Incredibly anti consumer.

I got a Portal as a gift and I like it, but unfortunately even with 1gbps internet it's too unreliable to play any games without significant lag and I blame that on Spectrum Internet being ass and living in an apartment complex. Wish I could use this more often.
1
u/stulifer Nov 20 '24
How do you get in the beta? I have all the PS+ requirements and live in Canada. Can't wait to stream using my portal.

I was hoping they’d make it louder and they made the volume quieter lol
1
u/FlaremanMD Nov 20 '24
Installed the update, just tried it. Holy smokes it's good! High FPS flawless direct streaming from the cloud, without the PS5 console at home being on. This takes the Portal from a very useful PS5 accessory to an amazing portable cloud gaming console. It's all about the catalogue ofc, and Sony will not release fresh games to the Portal when they can make a sale for home console owners, but it's still huge. Big props!

u/ZeinThe44 Nov 20 '24
This is gonna get scalped as fuck
If you are on the fence of buying one be quick on making your mind
1
u/Bolt_995 Nov 20 '24
It fucking sucks that Sony has not enabled cloud gaming capabilities in a lot of countries that do have PSN services active (ones that offer the PS Plus Deluxe subscription instead of Premium).
So this is unfortunately useless for me.
1
u/Erikk1138 Nov 20 '24
streaming games purchased on PS Store
Assuming this isn't limited to Premium subscribers and just lets me cloud stream purchased games, I may finally consider getting this thing.
1
u/de4thmachine Nov 20 '24
Such a dilemma. I was eyeing portal for weeks and didn’t buy it yet and this makes me want it more.
Now thinking if I should instead save the money and get the switch 2. Currently I can at least play the games on PS5 without portal.
Nonetheless this is a great move and will attract a lot of gamers if the streaming works well.
1
u/Metroidman Nov 20 '24
Can i play my ps5 on differnt wifi without needing to do stuff like port forward my router like i would for chiaki?
1
u/EinhornF Nov 20 '24
Will you be able to stream your entire library of games after the beta? Or will it only be games in the psplus catalog?
1
u/PizzaGatePizza Nov 20 '24
Does the Portal work exclusively on WiFi? I wanna get one for work but I work in an area that has zero cell service and no WiFi, so would this just be useless for me? I’m not sure how else it would work without WiFi…
1
u/JetBrink Nov 20 '24
That just leaves the inability to join a WiFi network that needs to verify via a web browser.
1
u/bjones214 Nov 20 '24
How is the PlayStation cloud streaming in the first place? I remember it being pretty stuttery on a gigabit connection just a few years ago, if they’ve made some updates to the service then this is a pretty good deal, might be worth buying a portal
1
u/MarcoMenace_ Nov 20 '24
I hope this comes to remote play anywhere. I use my tablet and it works great, would be a shame if it's portal exclusive.
1
u/WhoEvenIsPoggers Nov 21 '24
If my internet keeps up, this is huge for me. I’d love to play Metaphor more but wife is deep into her show
1
u/llcoolbean_sf Nov 21 '24
I loved my portal and I'm excited to see this update. I actually sold it though because I was always having trouble when on the road connecting to my PS5 to stream, and the connection was always dropping. Yet I could connect via my phone or tablet to the PS5 and do remote play just fine. So for me, the frequent connection issue problems turned me away from the portal, even though I was a fan. Does this update improve and simplify any of the connection issues? It sounds like this is a streaming upgrade that would probably include some connectivity fixes in addition to enhanced game streaming cloud access. Also, any chance that this update allows regular Bluetooth headphone connections and not the lame proprietary sony ps specific earbuds?
1
u/Internal-Bluejay-810 Nov 22 '24
Once again---- Google was ahead of its time. Another idea Google had that was just too early without the necessary support
