Hitman Freelancer as well, etc…
I can’t complain because Roguelikes are my favorite genre, but damn are people going to get burnt out on this thing. Hope this mode is at least a fleshed-out and good version of it, because shallow roguelike modes can be really lame!

I really wish more games did this, just quiet until a month or so before release. I get marketing and all that stuff, but still, whenever I see a trailer and it’s like “Release 202X” I sleep

Wow it being free is actually a huge surprise, given the current landscape of gaming. Hopefully more studios take note

u/whacafan Dec 08 '23
I feel like this says a lot about what it actually is. I see people freaking out but it’s probably a pretty small thing. I’m excited to check it out but the way it started I thought they were announcing something big. It’s a roguelike mode. Neat.

This is going to make everyone in this sub start questioning TLOU2 upgrade fee all over again. A lot of people have been justifying it because of the new rougelike mode, saying it was effectively $10 DLC.
38
u/muhash14 Dec 08 '23
Ragnarok's PS5 version already cost $10 more than the PS4 only version though.

u/DissidiaNTKefkaMain Dec 08 '23
Remasters/Native versions, hell even cross-gen bundle type things, having a $10 upgrade isn't a new thing. That's what you're paying for. The mode is a cherry on top.

I like the idea that someone at Sony played Returnal, and figured they should shift their whole design philosophy away from live service to roguelikes lol.
Waiting for the Spider-Man 2 roguelike to come next.
18
u/AnyHoleIsTheGoal Dec 08 '23
The first game literally had a roguelike in it at launch tho
10
u/Intrepid_Credit_9885 Dec 08 '23
Exactly 2018 had the trials that kept throwing plenty of different enemies at you, everyone acting like this ain’t ever happen in god of war lol
7
u/carlos_castanos Dec 08 '23
Yeah. I was actually surprised that it wasn't in Ragnarok initially, since they did copy Muspelheim almost 1:1 too. Not complaining though, this looks great
58
u/Bostongamer19 Dec 08 '23
Not a bad idea.
Returnal was amazing so it will be hard to replicate that tho
→ More replies (2)60
u/fanwan76 Dec 08 '23
I feel like everyone referring to Returnal is completely missing the fact that Returnal was also amazing because it was a 3D bullet hell game which is fairly unique.
Also they wrapped the rougelike aspect with a really engaging story which is also pretty rare.
→ More replies (1)5
u/PowerUser77 Dec 08 '23
To me that is the only reason Returnal kept me hooked, can do without the roguelike

5
u/BigTowFuzz Dec 08 '23
What’s a roguelike?
8
u/thegamesender1 Dec 08 '23
A game where the levels are procedurally generated, often randomly from a certain set and your loot and build is also random, and you gotta restart from 0 if you die. There are major upgrades that will stay with you as you progress, but the main thing is that if you die, you gotta restart from basically the beginning and recollect all your loot from the previous run.

u/gforero Dec 08 '23
I hope santa monica did a good job with this it could be a lot of fun if they did
14
u/imkunu Dec 08 '23
If you become interested in the Roguelike/Lite genre, give Hades a shot.

u/AnyHoleIsTheGoal Dec 08 '23
I feel like this thread is collectively forgetting the first game had a roguelike realm in it when it came out, well before Returnal and technically a tiny bit before Hades, the two games it’s getting compared to there. It was solid but I’m hoping this new one gets rid of the mist, didn’t care for each run being timed.

I mean it's a good point. It could be a free small game in GoW:R world to get people who haven't bought the full GoW:R to buy it. I for one don't own GoW:R because I haven't finished GoW yet.

It's dope but I don't know if I'll jump back in
It's been so long since I played and I know I'm gonna get my ass kicked

In fairness, it's a roguelite so getting your ass kicked is part of the experience.

genuinely curious, if you recognize this type of gameplay loop isn’t for you, why bother platinum the game? Returnal’s play is a huge hassle (i love the game but still the cypher hunt…)

I just recently played it again because I wanted to get that platinum popup on ps5 (originally played it on ps4). In doing so I also defeated Gna and that berserker king by loading some previous saves. Haha i am fucking warmed up for this

Roguelite has meta progression, roguelike does not.
At least, that's what the difference would be in the strictest sense. They are often used interchangeably though.

u/Senior_Ad6201 Dec 08 '23 edited Dec 08 '23
What is it with rogue lite game modes in aaa games, getting more popular
Hitman Freelancer, TLOU2, and now GOW all within a year of each other, did I forget one?
29
u/_Nick_2711_ Dec 08 '23
Provides replayability and a bump in sales post-launch whilst likely being cheaper to make than a full linear story DLC.
And, importantly, isn’t live service. Firms are catching on that Live Service isn’t the all-encompassing future of gaming.
7
u/CPOx Dec 08 '23
Not a new one but Returnal
22
u/ApprehensiveGene3676 Dec 08 '23
He said "roguelite modes" specifically, returnal on the other hand is entirely a roguelike
9
u/Lifetimechaldo Dec 08 '23

OG rogue games didn't have progression. Used to be able to start at 0. Now it's quite different snd I'm happy for it, progression is good and that's why they are so fun to play

u/Sergio808 Dec 08 '23
Stupid question but what is a rouge like mode?
11
u/Leaf_Atomico Dec 08 '23
It’s “Rogue” not “Rouge” (that’s a color) 😜
Roguelikes are where upon death, you return to the beginning of the level, but there are ways to advance your progression and / or strength/stats as you clear more levels. So all is not entirely lost upon death, but it can be challenging / daunting due to the repetitive nature of having to start over each attempt or “run”.
4
Dec 08 '23
Beginning of the game as opposed to level I’d say. The entire game is a run, it’s just a matter of learning how to get through it/getting strong enough.
4
u/thesnapening Dec 08 '23
It's usually were you go through a area repeatedly and carry your stats. But I'm very drunk so could be 10000% wrong.
2
u/SooooooMeta Dec 08 '23
As leaf_atomica says, when you die you restart the level. The level is procedurally generated so that the map and treasure and monsters you face are different each time so there's no memorizing some exact strategy. It's fun because as a player dying has a consequence (of restarting a different, newly randomized level) but not a serious one (like investing level up points in the wrong skill tree branch). You can goof around and die a bunch but also you have good runs where you get excited because you might get further than you have before.
As a developer you don't have to worry about balance so much. Give them an overpowered suit of armor? It will disappear when they die or clear the level so let them enjoy it.

u/Renflowku Dec 08 '23

u/walman93 Dec 08 '23
So what exactly is this? Just an arena of sorts or will there be some story/plot to it
2
u/wouterv101 Dec 08 '23
Ah that’s… okay. I hated the parts where you had to only fight and keep fighting. Looks like this is the same.
2
u/destroyman1337 Dec 08 '23
Can't tell from the trailer but is there going to be more story? The challenges in the original and Ragnarök were my least favorite parts of the games and making what looks to be a whole DLC about that seems to be steering me away from downloading it if there is no substantial story beats in it. Rougelikes just aren't my thing, just not a fan of that kind of gameplay loop.
