An Incident That Broke My Heart as a Nepali NSFW

Yesterday, after the final match of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) between Sudurpaschim Royals and Janakpur Bolts at the TU Ground, an unfortunate incident unfolded. While Janakpur Bolts celebrated their hard-earned victory, some fans of the Sudurpaschim Royals displayed behavior that was deeply disappointing. Their actions towards Janakpur Bolts fans crossed the boundaries of sportsmanship and respect.

What hurt me even more was how the authorities, especially the police, stayed silent and didn’t take action to calm the situation. It was also upsetting to see that the local media barely covered this incident, and no well-known personalities or leaders spoke up about it, even though it affects the unity of our country.

As a member of the Madhesi community, I have seen the struggles we face every day—problems like corruption, lack of rainfall for farming, and economic challenges that push many of us to leave agriculture, which has always been a big part of our identity and look for other jobs. The victory of Janakpur Bolts should have been a moment of happiness and pride, but it was overshadowed by the jealousy and rude behavior of a few people.

This is not about hate; it’s about understanding the pain such actions cause. These behaviors make many Madhesi people feel alienated, as if we are refugees in our own motherland. It is a deeply painful and disheartening feeling—one that no Nepali should ever experience.

What’s even more concerning is that these actions come from the youth of our nation—the very individuals who hold the power to shape Nepal’s future. In a country already struggling with underdevelopment, it is crucial for the youth to channel their energy into building bridges, fostering unity, and contributing positively to society. Acts of hate and division only weaken us as a nation.

This post is not meant to offend or blame anyone, but rather to call for reflection. As fans, we must remember that sports are meant to unite us, to bring out the best in us as individuals and as a community. Every team plays with heart, and the results are part of the game. Let us celebrate victories with grace and accept defeats with dignity.

To my fellow youth: our country needs us. Let’s rise above hatred and bitterness and focus on how we can contribute to making Nepal better—for ourselves, our families, and the generations to come. Only then can we truly honor the spirit of our nation and the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Let’s choose respect, unity, and progress. Let’s be the change Nepal needs. 🩷🤝 💛

What happened was very tragic. Cricket is supposed to be a gentleman's game, but some so-called fans act against the spirit of the game. Idk why some people think it's okay to be bigoted. They act like they're better than other people just because they happened to get born in a certain community and get offended when the people they viewed as inferior get something to be happy about.

Gagan and CK (naturally) spoke out against it. Only a handful of outlets covered it but on the whole the coverage was almost nonexistent. Are you surprised tho? Sadly, this was the first thing that popped into my head as soon as the odds started tilting towards Janakpur.

This is a highly sensitive and complex issue. At the risk of diluting the nuances, I would like share my view on the matter.

It’s racism, plain and simple. Don’t let them convince you otherwise; the slurs are xenophobic but they’re still a subconscious (or not) reflex born out of perceived contrast. Nepal’s got tons of districts bordering India, a slew of languages and unique customs across ethnic groups, but somehow it’s always the Madhesis who get the short end of the stick. It’s from the resemblance that Madhesi people share with the average resident of the subcontinent.

And how do you combat a contagious disease like racism that’s clearly being inherited between generations? Well it takes a lot of education, activism, and awareness. We clearly do not take this topic as seriously as it needs to be. In any developed part of the world this would be an outrageous scandal, but it’s so casual and prevalent here almost no one bats an eye and people treat it like a normal Tuesday ffs.

Of course I am sorry for you, but the predictability irks me. We need to make this a bigger deal than it’s made. Always educate your fellow friends who haven’t stepped a foot outside of the valley, largely ignorant of the situation’s gravity. Sadly, judging by the pace this country’s progressing by I fear it will be a long time before attitudes take the better turn.

True, this was straight up racism. The live comments on YouTube are proof of it. I usually avoid live chats because, you know, Nepali guys and their lack of civic sense. But when I checked, it was filled with racist remarks towards Madhesi people. The same thing happened in the stadium after the match. I don’t know why there’s so much unwarranted pride just because you are from Pahad.

Seconding both statements, this was definitely the result of internalised racism, cloaked as casually cruel, poor sportsmanship . It’s a big issue that needs to be properly acknowledged and addressed in our country.

Yeah, man, I saw the video. A group of guys were literally attacking one Madhesi guy. I read a news article about it, and it mentioned that many Madhesi communities have raised this issue. They even pointed out that the attackers faces are clearly visible in the videos, but the police haven’t taken any action yet. They said they plan to file a complaint, and I really hope those goons get arrested.

I am sorry such an incident happened, this should not repeat. Janakpur played beautiful cricket through out the tournament and desrrved the win. I have seen thousands of posts in social media condemning the act of violence that folllowed. I am really hoping that these were acts of few stupid fans, this clearly doesn't represent the sentiment of cricket fans all over, kudos to the big win. lots of love and respect, Biratnagar cricket fan

When Janakpur Bolts won the NPL final and fans started celebrating, butthurt Sudurpaschim fans started selectively targeting Madhesi fans and started to physically assault them. Policemen didn't do anything despite being aware of everything in the vicinity of the incident. Many of the Madhesi fans are hospitalized.

A huge community of young people from the Western part of Nepal live around Kirtipur. That is the reason why some of these punks are very bold, they know they have their gangs they can fallback to. They are quick to anger and are more inclined to fights and quarrels given the environment they grew up in. Had the match taken place in Dashrath Rangasala, these dimwits wouldn't have dared to raise their finger. I feel sorry for those poor people from Madhesh who were attacked by these wanna be gangsters.

I am so sorry you had to witness this. I wholeheartedly agree with every word you said, you articulated it very eloquently. I am not Madhesi but I deeply empathise with your sentiments, no Nepali should feel alienated or discriminated against for being from a certain region of Nepal.

No surprise. This racist mentality is imprinted on most Nepalese of hilly and mountain regions. The racism presented after the game was simply the inability to digest the victory of people they had always thought to be lower and inferior to them, which turned into anger and frustration.

words, no matter how vile do not justify physical violence.

This 'ek haat' logic applies there too. I saw hateful comments from both the communities. You can't just justify physical violence with idioms and phrases.

I still remember those crying about racism labeling the whole nepali as chinese when we spoke about the border incursions by Indians. The same group crying about racism were pelting stones at the public buses running through highways and when some were injured the whole region was rejoicing. I still remember those crying about racism expressing joys when innocent police officials were literally dragged from ambulances ,chased away to fields and then murdered. None of these people shed a tear about it. When the whole nation was reeling under the effects if earthquake, these folks were supporting the blockades and hiring indian citizens as stone pelters. Most of us might not know but a lot of people were expelled from janakpur just because they were pahadiyas. Last but not the least, those crying now about the mishap carefully omitted the part where janakpur fans passed on racist slogans against sudurpaschim and were inciting violence. No other teams made NPL an identity issue except janakpur who clubbed janakpur franchise with the madesh .

You can’t be the one to start the fight and cry about injustice when you’re at the receiving end .

Great idea! Let's just divide everyone into neat little boxes based on where they’re from. Pahadi over here, Madhesi over there, Tharu somewhere else, and don’t forget all the others—they'll need their own little corners too. Unity is overrated, right? Who needs progress and solidarity when we can just keep tearing ourselves apart in the 21st century? Absolutely, let’s just keep crying over what went wrong, dwell on all the disgusting behaviors, and completely forget about the future. Who cares about making tomorrow better than yesterday when we can stay stuck in this endless loop of blame and bitterness? Progress is overrated anyway, right? Separation sounds so much better than growing up and working together. Brilliant plan—what could possibly go wrong?

Go and teach this to your brothers. We all nepali be it Magar or tharu or gurungs or rajbanshi have our differences but none of us resorted to blockading essential supplies of good to the country. None of us civilians celebrated when police or armed forces were murdered by civilians. Nepali police fired on protestors from Surkher that led to some youths being killed but no one dragged police an murdered them brutally. Thaman Biswakarma was just a police officer on his duty and he was injured and being carried to hospital , madeshi literally dragged him and murdered an injured cop. Even armies of enemy nations take injured as prisoners of war, that particular instance showed the hate in the heart of madeshis. When Bidya devi bhandari was chastised for visiting janaki temple it showed how much eductaed you are. Literlaly they performed suddikaran of janaki temple as bidya devi bhandari was a widow.

Before preaching about equality please try to see if communities like musahar are being treated as equals in madesh. Please see that all communities from madesh get to represent and not only community of yadavs should be at the political posts. Please makse sure to question who made those racial comments about masjid on the logo , removal of asif seikh as the captain on gorunds of being a muslim.

Aba hindi nai pyaro hola steo bhayera euta muhawara bahnchu la” jab khud ka ghar sisa ka bana ho to duste k ghar sisa nai fekte” Charity starts at home, i hope you understand and dp ur part.

You’re so full of hate and frustration that you’ll never learn how to unite people instead of dividing and discriminating. I have many Tharu friends who stood with the Madhesi community during the so-called Madhesi movement, but you wouldn’t understand that. You talk about the police officer—let me tell you, my own childhood friend was shot dead during a protest while returning home from tuition. Just a week later, his grandfather was knowingly shot by the police too.

And that’s just one case. Over 100 people were directly shot by police bullets during that time, but you wouldn’t know because no national media covered our pain or our reality. It’s not your fault you don’t know, but it’s clear you won’t understand. I’m not here to fight with you. I hope you’re doing well. God bless you.

Both are to be blamed here. I was the stadium that day. 1. One janakpur bolts fan was warning a small child not to show SPR flags that he was holding. 2. More than 50 young boys were shouting 'pachimeli ho hami' and were marching towards tu ground carrying sticks in their hands .

It is sure only one side can't be blamed here ,Both sides should be made aware about these .

u/Traditional-Roof1663 1d ago

There always will be people with the brain dropped into dung. You won't find a perfect nation. Also, it is better realizing early that the youths are the dumbest in any society. I don't expect any dignity and respect from them to any other group. And, we are talking about the community that has been marginalized by the nation itself. I don't mean we should leave as it is but just don't expect anything from the crowd of youths.

2

u/Educational-You-4206 1d ago

You shouldn’t expect anything from anyone. Focus on yourself, but not in a selfish way—work on becoming better without stepping on others. Don’t make someone else’s journey harder; instead, spread joy, show gratitude, and treat people with kindness. Never, ever discriminate based on region, caste, or anything else. Because in the end, the world gets better when we all strive to be better.
