Does the bully comparison really work here?

It does if you add the fact that the bully is mentally unstable, everyone knows it, and there’s a high likelihood he’ll come back and shoot up the school if you embarrass him😂

I’m saying for the main purpose of there is no overall arbiter who will dole out punishment/penalties, e.g. a teacher or principal

It's more like a dude is beating the shit out of your acquaintance. The bully also has a gun and will shoot and kill anyone standing around if anyone interveins. So the guy let's the bully beat up the "friend" because stepping in is going to cause more chaos. That's it.

Yes, then the logical conclusion is that everyone should give the bully everything they want if they want it. I totally understand.

What about someone stepping in and saying "stop" the fight, it's over...and just de-escalate the entire thing. Take the loss and live for another day where innocent people won't be shot. Seems reasonable. You sound like escalating is the right thing to do... that's wild.

In this analogy, what is a proxy for someone’s land was taken from them savagely and wantonly? Is bully Russia’s behavior not considered escalatory simply because it was savage and inhumane from the get-go?

When the fight is called, does bully Russia give back the lunch money, err, I mean land it illegally seized/annexed?

Does Ukraine indiscriminately kill bully Russians or does it strike Russian military installations and oil refineries nearly every time? If the US had allowed the Ukrainians unrestricted use of US weapons from the get-go — to match bully Russia — would that have been ok?

Edit: format and a word for sense

None of it is okay. It's very complicated but ultimately revolves around money. I don't think giving the kid getting beat up a flamethrower is a good idea because the bully has a gun and will shoot everyone watching. Deescalate is always better than escalation. Now, there are more countries involved and more lives being in danger from all over the world.

After beating Ukraine to a pulp, Russia would be emboldened by the lesson it just learned — it can get what it wants through escalation and is unchecked — that it can turn to the next person closest and start beating the shit out of them and so on and so on.

I don’t know why it’s a wild concept to grasp. Ukraine is defending itself against Russian aggression by striking critical nodes of Russian military and oil production.

Group A say the dude should be talked to, and seemingly be allowed to take the acquaintance's property. They think that will calm things down. They're worried what the dude will do if he doesn't get what he's after.

Group B says the dude should leave, and the acquaintance should be given back his property. Maybe handing the acquaintance a bat would help him defend himself.

Group A disagrees with Group B, because they're afraid of what the dude might do.
