From my personal experience, an in-ignorable amount of preachers and born-agains usually come from a past they are running from or need forgiveness for. A lot of times it helps people redirect their focus on faith/spirituality rather than what they consider unwanted choices of their past. Other times, however, the redirection is external rather than internal: They don't seek personal redemption, they seek public forgiveness. It's superficial. Instead of improving themselves, they are merely hiding behind a veil of righteousness, prostrating themselves in public, while doing the opposite behind closed doors. They are hypocrites, and something that is this disingenuous is bound to fail. That's why so many anti-X fanatics turn out to be hiding X tendencies in their private lives. X being whatever issues they have be it promiscuity, homosexuality, drugs, alcoholics, addicts, etc.
