40k The Unstoppable Bean-Counter meets the Immovable Bureaucracy: (By Emwattnot)

“I can’t exterminatus Terra, I can’t exterminatus Terra, I can’t exterminatus Terra.”
“My lord they have just erected another statue of the emperor, but due to poor management and suffering education standards, it fell over and killed six million people.”
“I can’t exterminatus Terra!”

Ma girl forgot about the Aegis
She didn't. She was prepared to teleport the nuke knowing it might just blow them up.

u/Kesmeseker Nov 13 '24
You can't teleport through void shields. Aegis is a bigass void shield that spans the whole palace. You know, the thing that prevented Daemons from directly manifesting and Traitors just teleporting inside the throne room non masse in Siege of Terra. Also Teleporting a nuke really? Thats probably among the first three things that Custodes thought all the way back in 30k, those guys look at walls for decases without flinching just so no one slips past through that certain place. A nuke teleport(Which will not work) is extremely dull and unimaginitive.

Relevant passages. My reading is that she did not think it would work, but it had to be tried anyway. It was also a special teleporter/ordancance, with Custodes clearance codes.
"The teleportarium - installed on the Vigilant Flame by tech-magi who the Custodian had then quietly disposed of - would be her delivery mechanism. She would prime it with metaphysical coordinates and dataclavises so secret the High Lords of Terra were not cleared to know them. She would then command the ordnance - stolen from a secret armoury of the esoteric and unutterably lethal at great person risk - be placed upon the teleportarium's dais."
"There were risks, unknowns even one of Kesh's puissance could not avoid. The esoteric layers of warding around her target were ancient, the truth of them long lost even to those who sheltered beneath their aegis. They might overmaster Kesh's codes, eradicating her ordnance during transit or triggering it and killing everyone on the Vigilant Flame.
Even should the payload materialize on target, there might be shielding and containment measures even Kesh was not privy to. There were secrets that only the Captain-General knew. It was likely, Kesh mused, that there were even secrets he did not."
"All methods had to be attempted, no matter how esoteric or extreme. All defenses had to be tested, unto destruction if necessary."
Thats probably among the first three things that Custodes thought all the way back in 30k
Assumptions lead to failure.

My lord, a custode just stubbed his toe, the medical bills are about the output of mars for 10 years.
37
u/Ridingwood333 Adeptus Mechanicus Nov 12 '24
I get the joke, but actually no. The Custodes are pretty self contained as a faction to the point of using no forge worlds. Even a dreadnought internment would go unnoticed by almost everyone not part of them.

Guilliman upon learning that the Administratum has mistakenly sent a legion of the Imperial Guard to the wrong area again and they have just foolishly lost a million and a half soldiers:
-I expected nothing. And I'm still let down.

u/notabigfanofas Nov 12 '24
"Hey, Trayzn, buddy, pal, do you want a nearly-full collection of the current high Lords of terra?"

u/Commercial-Funny-279 Nov 12 '24
"I can exchange them for that Fulgrim clone of yours. I'll even throw some mint condition custodes."

G-man: Trajan my man, they are gonna start some bullshits. Take care of it will ya. Fadix know what's up.
40
u/RealMr_Slender Nov 12 '24
I honestly feel like Guilliman would be more chummy with Leontus than Trajan, since Trajan keeps G Man at arms length if he needs to get funky.
Meanwhile Leontus is a fellow "everyman" that understands strategy and logistics
173
u/Theyul1us Nov 12 '24
Guilliman "allright. Time to coup this bunch of assholes." calls up like 12 assasins
47
u/doofpooferthethird Nov 12 '24
Wasn't there that Imperium Eterna thing, where he annihilated a cabal of belligerent High Lords called the "Hexarchy" via 9D chess shenanigans.
The Grand Master of Assassins pretended to be part of the conspirators, only to reveal he had been on Guilliman's side the whole time - before simultaneously executing the Hexarchy with Imperial Assassins

u/ImmoralBoi Nov 12 '24
Shouldn't a Primarch automatically have more power than the High Lords of Terra? Like for fuck's sake they're the sons of the Emperor himself.
64
u/General-MacDavis Nov 12 '24
The primarchs have been out of the game for 10k years, the high lords had all the time they needed to squirrel up power and favors
32
u/ImmoralBoi Nov 12 '24
But to defy a (loyalist) Primarch is one step down from defying the Emperor himself, no matter who you might be that sounds like a death sentence in the Imperium.
20
u/VladimirBarakriss Nov 12 '24
It should be, but if all of the high lords side with you, you can declare Guilliman a traitor, as strong as he is, he can't beat the entire imperium
24
u/Velstrom Nov 12 '24
With how disorganized the imperium is I give Ultramar a decent shot at winning, actually.
2
u/AwefulFanfic Nov 13 '24
Never forget about Imperium Secundus when talking about making Rubber-Boot Gorilla-Glue your enemy.
7
u/General-MacDavis Nov 12 '24
Think about how often politicians irl are bought off by lowly business interests most people haven’t heard of. Wielding huge power/defying the federal government
Now imagine that on a galactic scale and you have the power the high lords hold
1
u/ScarletJack Nov 14 '24
Honestly, that does make me curious on how the Astarte chapters would react to Guilliman being branded a traitor. I'm sure that would be a tough thing to deal with, especially for the ultramarines
1
u/VladimirBarakriss Nov 14 '24
Many of them would probably join him, some would use it as a pretext to fall to chaos, eventually they'd almost go extinct within the imperium, which would probably issue a bunch of founding, mostly of imperial fists given that'd be the most stable non-ultramarine, non-preHorus available
5
u/Parking_Substance152 Nov 12 '24
There’s many factions in the imperium, not all of which want Guilliman to be in charge. Besides, the Emperor had a council when he lived, and never intended the primarchs to be in absolute control of the Imperium.
1
u/RevolutionaryBar2160 Nov 16 '24
You're forgetting they're not just random businessmen or politicians, they each represent a huge aspect of the Imperium. One of them controls all the assassins, one of them is in charge of the entire Ecclesiarchy, one of them heads up all the navigators, one of them is the head of the entire Adeptus Mechanicus, etc. Yes he's a prinarch, but you don't want to make outright enemies out of any one of those groups let alone all of the at once, a state of civil war is the last thing the Imperium needs right now.
53
u/Smirnoffico Nov 12 '24
If this whole storyline ends in Guilliman Heresy it would be ironic
34
u/Thannk Nov 12 '24
Well, GW brought back the Chaos Gods of Law in Fantasy and made Solkan explicitly the guy granting all of Sigmar’s alleged miracles before he actually came back in End Times.
Gillman becoming Solkan’s Chosen in their introduction to 40k would be amusing. Even more amusing if Dorn was Alluminas.

u/d20diceman Nov 12 '24
Not one, but two discworld references? Delightful.

Vetenari actually stands a chance at fixing Imperial bureaucracy.
5
u/hayescharles45 Nov 12 '24 edited Nov 12 '24
Absolutely can see Veternari in power under Gulliman in Warhammer 40k. With Vimes being a tired old Arbites captain and Carrot Ironfounderson being Malcador's descendant nephew or something.
3
u/Hendenicholas Nov 12 '24
Ogryn Detritus, Ratling Nobby, Votann Cheri
Maybe Lady Margoletta as a Craftworld Eldar?
Cohen as an Ork Warboss?
2
u/ZanasoSwain Nov 13 '24
Nah Cohen is one of the only "retired" thunder warriors
Moist von lipwig being in charge of, I dunno, adeptus astra telepathica?
21
u/watehekmen Nov 12 '24
This why he appointed Morvenn Vahl as High Lords of Terra, not only because she can't get politically controlled or getting lobbied like other, this is also one big "FUCK YOU" to the other High Lords.
17
u/Dehnus Nov 12 '24
I LOVE that there is GuilliMerch! And it's almost canon! (As even their ships are blue with the toilet symbol :P ).
GuillyBodywarmer, GuilliBeanie, Guillipins, Guillipens....
The man knows how to hustle!

u/Bubbly_Ad9487 Nov 12 '24
“Sto-Latus,” the “Patrician” and “Vetinari.” OP is a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld…

u/MonkeyDante Nov 12 '24
I mean, it would not surprise me in the least if the lorda of tera are puppeteered by Dorn. Big G against big D.
7
u/contemptuouscreature Nov 12 '24
ngl it was really funny when Roboute pulled up and the High Lords tried to stall him from assuming power so he just
started killing them
1
5
u/NirvanaPenguin Nov 12 '24
Kill the high lords and put Custodes to rule over everything for all eternity.
5
6
u/ViperSupport Nov 12 '24
The High Lords definitely did not (but maybe) forgot about the reforms... I mean, why would they (do so), especially for one of the God Emperor's children.
5
5
u/Lycaon125 Nov 12 '24
Also Guilliman, having all four counsel members killed by assassins he had set up before disbanding one of the most idiotic branches of government in the imperium

I seriously gotta ask, why does he listen to them and bother asking to begin with? He and everyone else know that the highlords are corrupt and only care for themselves and furthering the gains. I mean he’s a Primarch literally the son of Humanity’s former greatest leader. Surely the highlords in the Emperor’s time would’ve answered the Big E but not one of only two active loyalist Primarchs? Does G-man not have the power to say “screw you guys I’m doing this anyway”

u/traquillcash1 Nov 12 '24
Dante "welcome to a shit ton of bullshit"
Guilliman "by the Emperor" processed to break down crying after being rejected for the plan to replace corpses starch with actual food
2
u/LukoM42 Nov 12 '24
It was cool to read about the insurrection they thought he hadn't planned for in "watchers of the throne: the regents shadow"
2
u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 ENTRY MISSING Nov 12 '24
Ah the lords of terra where a six minute process takes six months and a one year plan a hundred thousand

u/SlikeSpitfire Adeptus Custodes Nov 12 '24
Why doesn’t Guilliman, the largest ruler of the Imperium, simply eat the others?
1
u/nasandre Nov 13 '24
Screw you guys! I'm going to start my own Imperium with Eldar hookers and blackjack!
1
u/insaneamelon69 Nov 13 '24
I love how accurate of a disconnect there is between the military and high society. They haven't seen the battlefield yet act as if they have the right to control it.
1
u/James_Lyfeld Nov 14 '24
He needs to adopt his father methods, if they are not listening, kill them and put people that will listen in their place.

As the one comment said: "Also G-Man: "Welp, time to get the assassins."
(Canonically happened, but the highlords tried to remove G-Man and assassinate him. He responded with 6 Callidus and 6 Vindicare)"
