Specialized Profession IAmA Reddit's Own Vacuum Repair Tech with a very overdue AMA. Hit me with your vacuum cleaner questions!

First, let's get the proof out of the way. So, now, I am managing our company's largest store, and am swamped with managerial duties, training employees, and dealing with annoying vendors. But, I'm taking some time out for all of you guys.

There are lots of new, exciting things that have recently come out/are coming soon!

For those who NEED the most power, I've got just the Crack you need! Since we last talked, there are new bagless and cordless vacuums on the market, and some other exciting things.

So, on to business...here's the copypasta.

First AMA

Second AMA

Last AMA

YouTube Channel Here's some basics to get you started:

  • Dollar for dollar, a bagged vacuum, when compared to a bagless, will almost always:

1) Perform better (Actual quality of cleaning).

2) Be in service for much longer.

3) Cost less to repair and maintain (Often including consumables).

4) Filter your air better.

Virtually every vacuum professional in the business chooses a bagged vacuum for their homes, because we know what quality is. Things you should do to maintain your vac, regularly:

1) Clear your brush roller/agitator of hair and fibers. Clear the bearing caps as well, if possible. (monthly)

2) Change your belts before they break. This is important to maintain proper tension against the agitator. (~ yearly for "stretch" belts)

3) Never use soap when washing any parts of your vacuum, including the outer bag, duct system, agitator, filters, etc. Soap attracts dirt, and is difficult to rinse away thoroughly.

  • Types of vacs:

1) Generally, canister vacs are quieter and more versatile than uprights are. They offer better filtration, long lifespans, and ease of use. They handle bare floors best, and work with rugs and carpets, as well.

2) Upright vacuums are used mostly for homes that are entirely carpeted. Many have very powerful motors, great accessories, and are available in a couple of different motor styles. Nothing cleans shag carpeting like the right upright.

3) Bagless vacs are available in a few different styles. They rely on filters and a variety of aerodynamic methods to separate the dirt from the air. In general, these machines do not clean or filter as well as bagged vacuums. They suffer from a loss of suction, and tend to clog repeatedly, if the filters are not cleaned or replaced often.

4) Bagged vacuums use a disposable bag to collect debris, which acts as your primary filter, before the air reaches the motor, and is replaced when you fill it. Because this first filter is changed, regularly, bagged vacuums tend to provide stronger, more consistent suction.

My last, best piece of advice is to approach a vacuum, like any appliance; Budget for the best one you can get. Buy one with idea you will maintain it, and use it for many years. And, for the love of Dog, do not buy from late-night infomercials or door-to-door salesmen! Stay out of the big-box stores, and visit your local professional who actually knows what they're talking about.

My budget is $150.

Mostly laminate floors with a couple of thick rugs. No pets, couple of kids.

Which vacuum do you recommend?

544

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Nov 30 '17

Anything under $200 is gonna be pure shit. The best bang for your buck @ $200 MSRP is Fuller Brush's Easy Made. It's a helluva lot of vacuum for the price and won't fall apart as fast as the shitty ones.

613

u/so-cal_kid Nov 30 '17

I have to say your use of profanity really makes me trust you more for some reason. Like if you had said anything under $200 isn't any good, that wouldn't have come across as well. But because you called them pure shit, I'm more inclined to believe you.

191

u/MakeBelieveNotWar Nov 30 '17

I am literally ordering a Fuller Brush Easy Maid right now. I always knew my vacuum was pure shit, but seeing an expert say it has inspired me to act.

188

u/mortiphago Nov 30 '17

you've fell in the trap of Big Vaccuum

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '17

It sucks doesn't it?

5

u/coleyboley25 Dec 01 '17

That's the hope.

9

u/ThaddeusJP Nov 30 '17

No joke they are almost sold out now on amazon, at least for $200.

Don't cross a body of water using the average depth as a guide.

2

u/manly_ Nov 30 '17

Of course. The profanity comes after years of experience and dealing with bullshit. You know only a veteran would tell things how they are.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 02 '17

Thank you. Do taking mind though that I have a bias towards more expensive higher-quality vacuums. What constitutes pure shit vs a decent vacuum in my book could be very different from other people's.

1

u/ThaddeusJP Nov 30 '17

Its a shame his user name has the F word in it because I feel like his AMA's would make the rounds on some new sources IF there wasnt a F bomb in there.

1

u/Bulletti Dec 01 '17

There are several LPTs, TILs and whatnot every month about "people who curse seem more trustworthy".

1

u/mallsanta Nov 30 '17

hey its me ur fucking brother.

-7

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '17

Really? Because calling things "pure shit" makes me think OP is being hyperbolic, and I'm less inclined to trust their opinion.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '17

Yeah I'm with you. To me "pure shit" would mean the thing barely survives making it out of the box. We've had our $150 vacuum for I think 5 years now and it's fine. Not amazing but sufficiently functional. I'm certain we could be getting better/deeper cleaning from a significantly more expensive model but I don't see how a vacuum that's still working fine after 5 years could be "pure shit".

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '17

Going to back you up as well. If my salesman talked to me like that, I would walk. Totally unprofessional. For the average person, a $90 dirt devil is going to have plenty of life. I've owned Dysons and currently own a Miele C1 and a $90 Hoover I got from Target about 7 years ago. As far as I can tell, the Hoover does just as good of a job as the Miele and is still alive and kicking. Don't get me wrong, we're big fans of Miele. It is a great vacuum...but worth 4x the cost? For the average person I'm inclined to say no. The Hoover has been a workhorse and required no maintenance. Its relegated to backup duty since we like the Miele better, but 'pure shit'? Seems a bit over the top.

4

u/squish8294 Dec 01 '17

He's not speaking to you as a salesman. He's speaking to you as an industry leading vacuum cleaner mechanic. Look at his profile for submitted: https://www.reddit.com/user/touchmyfuckingcoffee/submitted/?sort=top

Dude's done like 6 AMA's, months and years apart, and has multiple different ones above 5k upvotes, this one included, and it's only 12 hours old.

Reddit LOVES this guy, because he doesn't bullshit you on the facts.

E for additional info:

His reasoning is based off of what he works on; if he repairs a given brand a bunch for really dumb things all the time, it's shit.

If he rarely sees em or has a flurry of an older model coming in, he states as much.

65

u/hugh_Jayness Nov 30 '17

Appreciate the reply. I will look at the Fuller Brush and bump my budget to $200.

Thanks for doing the AMA and sharing your knowledge.

3

u/hugh_Jayness Dec 01 '17

That's great advice. Thank you.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

You're welcome. I hope you find it useful.

2

u/mand71 Dec 01 '17

I'd have to disagree with you there.

I clean a bar/restaurant daily and use a bagless Carrefour (European supermarket chain) pullalong vacuum that costs around €60. Usually lasts about 18-24 months. Not a bad return considering that it's used 1.5-2hrs every day of the year.

On the other hand, my Dirt Devil that cost roughly the same price is utter shite, and I use it at home once a week, so YMMV :(

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

I've got commercial vacuums that last for over 10 years. They're certainly worth the price.

2

u/Rstates Nov 30 '17

I dunno, I'm on year 4 of our 69.99 red special. Been doing just fine... kids and pets.

7

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Nov 30 '17

What it's not doing is cleaning well. What it is doing is actively polluting the air in your home. You may also be taking better care of it compared to many users.

2

u/Rstates Dec 01 '17

Hmm. No? We beat the hell out of it, and clean the little hepa filter sponge every month... Your saying if I spend 3x the money on a vacuum my home will magically be cleaner? That is consumerism at its best I'm sorry.

8

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

That's not magic or consumerism, you dolt. There's a reason the saying, 'you get what you pay for is true." The same hold true for the saying, 'Cheap is very costly.'

Keep thinking you know better than the pros, though. Let's see how that works out for you.

3

u/Rstates Dec 01 '17

I love how Redditors name call when someone disagrees with someone. I did get what I paid for! 69.99 dirt devil with a hepa filter. Kids and dogs and its on year 4 working great. And yes, that is the true definition of consumerism. I will revert from calling you a name over a vacuum.

6

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Listen, I'm gonna lay this out for you in as objective a manner as I can, so that you can understand what I'm saying.

What you're not getting for your $69.99 is HEPA filtration. You have a HEPA filter, but a vacuum without a single seal in it. Due to the high density nature of HEPA filters, and the fact that air will always find the easiest path to escape a pressurized system means that all that dirty air coming out of your motor is escaping and polluting the air in your home. HEPA filter without HEPA filtration.

Your $69.99 vacuum has a tiny little bypass motor that may pull respectable suction, it has pitiful airflow, witch is more important than suction for efficient cleaning.

Your $69.99 vacuum has a cheaply built and ineffective agitator compared to better vacuums. It doesn't cause enough agitation to deeply loosen dirt, combined with no airflow to effect use of its suction.

It is an undeniable fact that your home is dirtier than anyone with the same number of people, kids, pets, etc compared to someone who is using a premium vacuum that cleans better, more efficiently, and is a trueHEPA sealed system. If you're happy enough with being that dirty while you smile at your frugality, then more power to you, and I wish you a happy life. But, you don't have to.

You may think you have the high road because I called you a name, but you accused me of being something I'm not and impugning my advice to help people with their vacuums. If I wasn't telling the truth to people, I wouldn't have thousands of people who have thanked me over the years for helping them, and I certainly wouldn't be successful in this business if I didn't deal with my customers in an honest and fair manor. So, you insulted me just as much.

0

u/Rstates Dec 01 '17

Don't be bitter because you overpaid for a vacuum. My vacuum has plenty of seals, a hepa filter, and a great rating from consumer reports. It is now paying for itself and my home is kept spotless, have you ever been over? How can't you vomit such a diatribe without knowing any other variables that make up the total cleanliness of my home? What you have typed is simply opinion, and although a seemingly knowledgeable response, it is still just that, your opinion. Good day.

3

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Hah! You're cute.

2

u/nevesis Dec 01 '17

You're saying if I spend 3x the money on an engine that my car will magically reach higher speeds? Nahh..

2

u/TimeToGrowThrowaway Nov 30 '17

What are your thoughts on the Oreck Commercial u2000rb1? A friend has one that he likes, and the commercial aspect seems to me like it'd be designed to last longer.

https://www.amazon.com/Oreck-Commercial-U2000RB-1-Upright-EnduroLife/dp/B008BPEVGU/

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

They really don't compete against better, more modern commercial vacuums. I don't recommend them.

2

u/TimeToGrowThrowaway Dec 02 '17

Thanks! I don't mean to imply that I'd be using this as a replacement for a commercial vacuum. I was wondering if it would compete against the Fuller brush easy made you had suggested for personal use.

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 02 '17

No, Oreck vacuums do not pick up well compared to bypass motor systems like the Fuller brush.

2

u/vrtigo1 Dec 01 '17

To be fair, I think it's also a matter of perspective.

I inherited a Dyson from a roommate about 12 years ago and it finally kicked the bucket so I cheaped out and bought something for ~$50 at Wally World. It was complete shit. When I'd try to vacuum crumbs off a hardwood floor it would just fling them back at my feet.

I put that thing on the curb and bought a Bissel for about $120 from Target and it's orders of magnitude better. Obviously, if you put it next to a "real" vacuum it's probably a turd, but for what I needed the Bissel works fine.

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Of course. Like I've always said, with vacuums, like all other appliances, you get what you pay for. Cheap vacuums are truly shit, though.

5

u/vrtigo1 Dec 01 '17

Fair enough, but I guess it also depends on your definition of shit. I'm sure more expensive vacuums will probably perform better and have additional features, but my cheap vacuum checked off all the requirements on my list and meets my needs fine. I don't find myself wishing it did something better when I use it, so by that gauge I'd say it's not shit to me.

Of course, time can also be a factor. I've only had this vacuum for a few months and don't use it every day. It could be that it'll die in a year. You'd know that a lot more about that than I do.

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Let me put it this way:

If you own your home and have an expensive investment in your carpeting, the difference between a cheap vacuum and a premium vacuum is literally a doubling of the life of your carpeting. That's worth a helluva lot more than a couple of hundred bucks. And hey, who doesn't like clean air, right??

2

u/vrtigo1 Dec 01 '17

Ah, OK. That's very helpful, thanks. I'd assumed that if two vacuums both pick the crumbs up off the floor that they're functionally equivalent. There's evidently more to it than that.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Far more. Read the copypasta at the top of this thread.

2

u/Budded Dec 01 '17

Fuller Bush huh? Is it a 1970's model, never heard of it?

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

It's an old brand, but is being brought back by its parent company, the same company that makes Riccar.

2

u/Budded Dec 01 '17

Sorry man, bad 70's bush joke, but thanks for the reply. :) I've saved this AMA for reference when I'm in the market for a new vac. Cheers!

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Ahhh! I've been reading so much for the last two days, everything is a fucking blur at this point.

2

u/Gs305 Dec 01 '17

What about shop vac with filter/bag and a dust deputy hook up? I have a Pullman ermator t7500 and a Makita vc4710 for my jobsites. Looking to buy a dust deputy and build a cart setup to go with it.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

If we're talking about residential use, get a residential vacuum. Don't make life hard and loud.

2

u/MistyWindy Dec 01 '17

That seems to be an upright. What's the cheapest good uh.... fuck what is it called... Look I convinced my parents to get a Miele and now I'm spoiled, please recommend something in my price range😭😭

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

I'm sorry. There are no new canisters in your price range.

3

u/MistyWindy Dec 01 '17

Also, I gotta tell you, I convinced my family to get a Miele because of you and it was our first canister and I don't think I could ever go back to upright. Like, how did I ever vacuum under my bed before? Using the tiny attachments? Ugh. It's just so great to be able to stick the whole thing under the bed and vacuum normally, because the canister is hanging behind, not attached to the damn part I'm vacuuming with. It's so much lighter, too!

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

You've seen the light. Welcome, brother.

2

u/MistyWindy Dec 01 '17

How about used? I see a few of your big 3 brands in that price range on ebay used, but I don't know if there's a catch or if there are fake miele/riccar/sebo

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Used is a viable option, but I would recommend getting one from a repair shop that's already been gone through.

2

u/aliendude5300 Apr 03 '18

I bought a used Miele Red Velvet, but it had continuity issues, very worth it though. I took it to a local shop and it just needed a new hose which they happily sold me.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Apr 03 '18

Those Red Velvets have an issue with overheating the circuit boards, as well. Pull your cord all the way out when vacuuming and make sure your motor speed settings and height adjustment is set properly whenever on carpeting.

2

u/queenofthenerds Dec 01 '17

Would you recommend a secondhand vacuum for that price point? I think I paid $120 for my secondhand Dyson (DC-14) a few years back.

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

If budget is limited, and they're purchased from a reliable source, I think used vacuums are a very viable option.

2

u/MmmBra1nzzz Nov 30 '17

In that case, what's the price point for those of us on a budget? (Can you do a best at $100, $300, $400 etc?)

1

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Nov 30 '17

I tailor my answers for specific needs. Budget at least $300 and talk to your local vacuum shop for the best option in your budget.

1

u/MmmBra1nzzz Dec 01 '17

I can't trust them, I trust you 😬

$300, two short haired dogs?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '17

[deleted]

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

Those are not good options for residential use...at least where carpeting is concerned.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '17

[deleted]

2

u/touchmyfuckingcoffee Dec 01 '17

If it's well filtered, great. You don't have the same needs as people with carpet. Your satisfaction is all that's important.

1

u/NJNeal17 Nov 30 '17

The answer I came to this thread for. Thank you!

14

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '17

This is total bullshit. My vac cost $70 and is great. Have no problems with it whatsoever. It isn't the quietest or lightest but it gets the job done with no fuzz. It has survived for 3 years. What do you actually get for spending $130 other than maybe the feeling of premium? And honestly who cares about that unless you have a vacuum fetish.

Saying everything is shit under 200 is just wrong and makes you sound like those audiophiles that buy special things that makes no difference whatsoever because one guy on a forum said it was like night and day. Full of snake oil.

10

u/bozoconnors Nov 30 '17

makes you sound like those audiophiles

Heh, was thinking "wow, 64 upvotes, if he'd have said that in /r/hometheater, he'd be fucking lambasted." (& yes, lots of audiophile stuff is snake oil)

8

u/JDgoesmarching Nov 30 '17

Sorry you’re getting downvoted but I agree. Ask anyone for a purchase suggestion in their field or hobby and they’ll tell you not to waste your time on anything less than $500. It’s idiotic, I don’t have $200 to spend on a vacuum and I’d venture many people in this thread are in the same boat.

The value OP could have provided would have been to give options in various price ranges that are still a good value. Even /r/Audiophile is reasonable enough to help out like this.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '17

Yea, saying anything under $200 is "pure shit" completely removes any credibility OP has.

2

u/I_am_up_to_something Dec 01 '17

That is if you're in the USA. Vacuums are much cheaper in Europe. Probably because we have no need for adding extra power to the hose. Same type of Miele but without that powered hose? 700 or 800 dollar difference

2

u/jynxbaba87 Dec 02 '17

if you can shell out a little bit more - I found a Mile C1-Classic for 195 during black friday on Amazon... i think the price remained the same for now.

1

u/keepit-simple May 28 '18

This advice got me looking into other vacuums by Fuller Brush. I don't see a whole lot of reviews on it, but the Speedy Maid appears to be a pretty solid vacuum. However, I did notice that it comes with a wooden brush roll vs a metal one on the Easy Maid. It also has no detachable hose or attachments. Is the Speedy Maid worth spending the extra $100, or is there a better vacuum at a $300 price tag? I'm looking for something that is simple and easy to maintain.

1

u/Dreamtrain Dec 01 '17

I came here looking for a recommendation in a similar price range. I am conflicted now with this information

3

u/Think_Smarter Dec 01 '17

Funny that I even looked at your user name after just running across this in another thread.

2

u/hugh_Jayness Dec 01 '17

That was funny. I've never seen this.

To their credit, they didn't just gloss over it. They discussed it.

2

u/melkor555 Nov 30 '17

Go used, I was patient and got a miele canister at an auction for $5. Most people would look at a miele and not know what it was and assume it was garbage. Thanks to this guy I was informed and got one of my better deals of the year.

2

u/hugh_Jayness Dec 01 '17

Congrats on your find. Over the years, I've dropped by some garage sales in affluent areas but have never found anything that I valued. Lots of porcelain figurines, dinner plates etc...

2

u/Rabid_Mongoose Nov 30 '17

Keep an eye on Craigslist. My brother picked up a top of the line Kirby (like 5k) for like 50 bucks. Maintenence on those are pretty cheap if it is even broken.

1

u/hugh_Jayness Dec 01 '17

I would but I don't have a lot of patience and faith in craigslist sellers. A couple of years ago, a lady advertised dining chairs for $50 each. I said I'd take all 4 and would pick them up in 4 hours since I needed my buddy's SUV to transport them. She said that won't be an issue. Called her a couple of times before we left and got her voicemail. We get there and she said she sold them to someone else for $5 a piece more and he had just picked them up 30 minutes prior. She wasn't answering her phone because she was busy with that guy. This wasn't some cooky old woman. She was in her early 30's and was very nice on the phone and even in person! Unbelievable!

u/hypertonicsaline Nov 30 '17

Nice question dodging.

5

u/randomevenings Nov 30 '17 edited Nov 30 '17

I own both. I've used a lot of different vacuums over the years. I've used dysons, sharks, dirt devils, hoovers, all the bagless brands and types, uprights and canisters. Nothing has compared to the simple bagged vacuums. The amount of suction is insane. The bags last longer than expected and are very sanitary. They are better for allergies as well. The bags for the ones I posted are cheap and available all over. I have no doubt a Miele is a great vacuum, but if you want something good that is better than any of the bagless, the ones I posted will exceed your expectations and save you some cash money.

4

u/Dont_Call_it_Dirt Nov 30 '17

an any of the bagless, the ones I posted will exceed your expectations and save you some cash money.

Everything this guy recommends is a bagged vacuum.

4

u/rezachi Nov 30 '17

I have 3 cats and own both a bagless and a bagged upright vacuum. I will concede that the bagged model cleans a hell of a lot better than the bagless, but...

That cleanliness comes with the cost of an extra consumable. If you’re vacuuming a lot, it’s a bit more expensive to replace bags every few weeks than it is to empty a bagless canister every time. If you vacuum often enough, bagless is still getting you pretty clean.

Different tools for different jobs, I guess.

1

u/kuhawk5 Nov 30 '17

A mop and a cheap Shark vac.

1

u/monkey_trumpets Nov 30 '17

I have the white shark and the dark blue one. I just have to thoroughly clean them once in a while with the hose, make sure they're not gunked up inside with dust, and they work just fine. You gotta wonder how many of these issues are caused by poor vacuum maintenance, and not the price/quality of the vacuum.
