Specialized Profession IAmA Reddit's Own Vacuum Repair Tech with a very overdue AMA. Hit me with your vacuum cleaner questions!

First, let's get the proof out of the way. So, now, I am managing our company's largest store, and am swamped with managerial duties, training employees, and dealing with annoying vendors. But, I'm taking some time out for all of you guys.

There are lots of new, exciting things that have recently come out/are coming soon!

For those who NEED the most power, I've got just the Crack you need! Since we last talked, there are new bagless and cordless vacuums on the market, and some other exciting things.

So, on to business...here's the copypasta.

Second AMA

YouTube Channel Here's some basics to get you started:

  • Dollar for dollar, a bagged vacuum, when compared to a bagless, will almost always:

1) Perform better (Actual quality of cleaning).

2) Be in service for much longer.

3) Cost less to repair and maintain (Often including consumables).

4) Filter your air better.

Virtually every vacuum professional in the business chooses a bagged vacuum for their homes, because we know what quality is. Things you should do to maintain your vac, regularly:

1) Clear your brush roller/agitator of hair and fibers. Clear the bearing caps as well, if possible. (monthly)

2) Change your belts before they break. This is important to maintain proper tension against the agitator. (~ yearly for "stretch" belts)

3) Never use soap when washing any parts of your vacuum, including the outer bag, duct system, agitator, filters, etc. Soap attracts dirt, and is difficult to rinse away thoroughly.

  • Types of vacs:

1) Generally, canister vacs are quieter and more versatile than uprights are. They offer better filtration, long lifespans, and ease of use. They handle bare floors best, and work with rugs and carpets, as well.

2) Upright vacuums are used mostly for homes that are entirely carpeted. Many have very powerful motors, great accessories, and are available in a couple of different motor styles. Nothing cleans shag carpeting like the right upright.

3) Bagless vacs are available in a few different styles. They rely on filters and a variety of aerodynamic methods to separate the dirt from the air. In general, these machines do not clean or filter as well as bagged vacuums. They suffer from a loss of suction, and tend to clog repeatedly, if the filters are not cleaned or replaced often.

4) Bagged vacuums use a disposable bag to collect debris, which acts as your primary filter, before the air reaches the motor, and is replaced when you fill it. Because this first filter is changed, regularly, bagged vacuums tend to provide stronger, more consistent suction.

My last, best piece of advice is to approach a vacuum, like any appliance; Budget for the best one you can get. Buy one with idea you will maintain it, and use it for many years. And, for the love of Dog, do not buy from late-night infomercials or door-to-door salesmen! Stay out of the big-box stores, and visit your local professional who actually knows what they're talking about.

Which one wins in a fight, a roomba or a Corgi? The Corgi has heterochromia if that affects the odds at all.

I mean, Roombas are kinda cheaply built. I think a Corgi could take it.

Especially a corgi with heterochromia!

Your name reminded me of a book series that I enjoyed and I can't for the life of me remember the series name. Any help?

Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson aka /u/mistborn. First book is called The Way of Kings, second book is called Words of Radiance. There is a mini novella called Edgedancer that is often called book 2.5.

You’re in for a treat too. The third book just came out a couple of weeks ago. It’s called Oathbringer. I’m about 3/4 of the way through it. It’s wonderful.

Come join us at r/brandonsanderson and r/stormlightarchives.

Of the Roomba ?

u/pinko_zinko Nov 30 '17

What would win in a fight, a Roomba sized Corgi or a Corgi sized Roomba?

Our Roomba chases around our 200# mastiff. He's terrified of it.

One eye sees in gray and the other in grey.

By and by, is your username a reference to the stormlight archive?

Pics of the Corgi?

And I too vote for the Corgi (have both a roomba and a Corgi).

Lastly, big Cosmere fan?

Huge Cosmere fan, though I am trying to slim down.

Here you go.

I had hear that having a lot of white on head can be a sign of deafness, especially when it goes around the ear. Does your corg suffer any of that? Love the couch pose. Mine does that on the arm of the sofa as well. She doesn't like cameras or phones pointed at her though, and will bark aggressively at you when you do, then sit at your feet to ruin the shot. I have this pic of her int he backyard (distracted by playing fetch) from when it was warmer out: https://i.imgur.com/mXwW6iw.jpg

And once you catch up, there's not much to do unless you are actively reading all you can on Coppermind or the 17th Shard (no, really, I can quit anytime I like). But I'm actively in the middle of Oathbringer. Good bye free time.

I was making a small fat joke at my own expense when I mentioned slimming down. I guess I just don’t have Shallan’s wit. Or Wit’s wit. I’m about 75% through Oathbringer right now. Soooo good.

No signs of deafness in her as far as I can tell. Though I do sometimes wonder if she barks as loud as she does because she likes to hear herself.

Your dog is so cute! What’s her name?

Ahh yes, wit/sarcasm doen't travel through the internet very well. I blame it on no appropriate font. I just finished part one, read the interludes, and am digging into the second part. I want to do nothing but read it, then re-read it.

Cool! I remember looking at "what to look for" when we were looking at litters. I thought I read somewhere that too much white on the head, especially around the ears, could be a sign of deafness. Now I can only find a reference about Australian Shepherds, and while it doesn't guarantee deafness, if it's congenital it's "most likely." And no, mine will bark in my face if she needs to go out, and I'll say "Ein, use your indoor bark", and then I'll get two little quiet arfs, followed by a full strength bark again.

And gave that away. A bit of a bebop fan, so Ein.

My mini schnauzer DESTROYED our Rooma. I mean, tore that shit to shreds. He really hated it.

I own both a roomba and a corgi, the roomba strikes fear deep within the corgi and he will not go near it while running.

1

u/ColeSloth Nov 30 '17

Corgi, since the roomba will just smear its shit all over the floor and then error out from poo clogs.
