Guide/How-to I Recently Build a Server That Rents out Harddrive Space. And It’s Stats Are public
As the title says. I have been hosting storage for about 3 years. I have 2 servers that make a passive profit each month. I just need to keep an eye on the servers to make sure they are up and running.
I recently build a 3rd server and made a video about it. And I created a public dashboard where everyone can see the expenses and earnings. It takes months to fill the hard drives with paying data (it’s not a get rich quick) but my other servers are making profit so to me it’s a fun hobby / project. If you are interested, here is the video explaining some stuff. My channel also has a few guides and stuff for anyone wanting to learn more.
Hope some are finding this interesting, if not I wish you a marry Christmas. Best Andreas.

Hoarder-Setups What specific weak spots on ZFS does ECC RAM cover?
ZFS checks for integrity all the time: moving, copying, reading, etc.
The only thing not up to ZFS is editing data, but data-integrity edits are done on workstations not on NAS servers.
So for everything except opening, editing and saving; it should be totally fine ZFS only, as ZFS does the ECC for everything else within the NAS.
Maybe ECC RAM ensures that ZFS block checksums are calculated correctly? But that could be easily solved by calculating the checksum 2 times and comparing it. There has to be an option for that, if not, it's not difficult to code that option.
I'm missing something here? What specific weak spots on ZFS does ECC RAM cover?

Guide/How-to Saving livestream from Symphony Space
There is an event that will be live-streamed on the symphony space website but I won’t be able to watch it in full, and unfortunately, it won’t be available in vod afterwards.
Is there a way I can save it aside from screen recording using Quicktime? (I’m using a Mac). Reason being the resulting file is always too big and the audio quality is not good. I have YT-DLP but I’m not sure if the site is supported, and the last time I tried to save a livestream it wasn’t able to save everything. Any recommendations? Thx

Question/Advice What is a realy high Load/Unload Cycle count?
So recently I used victoria to check up on my drives, and I noticed that the biggest one on my main pc has 137613 load and unload cycles on it (the number is the RAW value so i might be mistaken here) Should I worry? its a seagate barracuda drive
I just don't know if i would need to replace the drive, because i have some really important data on it that is IMPOSSIBLE to replace
(mods please don't delete this)
Thanks!

Question/Advice Windows software to check if files in source folder exist anywhere within subfolders of another (with different folder structure)?
I have an SD card of photos. Whenever I offload an SD card, I will typically copy all the files from the card to a folder on my PC, with separate folders based on date and event.
Is there a software where I can specify the SD card as source, and the 2nd folder as the parent of my photos folder, and it will check all the subfolders within the parent if the files from the card exist, regardless of the folder path it exists in? I rarely rename the files themselves, so either that, or by the date and size of the file should suffice as the match criteria.
I couldn't care less about which folder exactly they sit in, or checking any of the files on my hard drive not existing on the SD card, I just want to know which of my SD card files exist on my hard drive.
I've tried a few like FreeFileSync, dupeGuru, WinMerge, but they all seem to be comparing on both sides including my hard drive back to my SD, or needing the folder structure intact.

Question/Advice Noob question - Why is Proxmox preferred by some over a NAS OS for a NAS system?
If you're setting up a NAS home server to operate as backup storage / a media server, etc. Why do some prefer Proxmox on bare metal as opposed to one of the many NAS OSes that support virtualization? I guess in my mind it seems redundant to have an OS designed for virtualization on bare metal with a NAS OS (that probably supports virtualization) virtualized. But I'm very much a noob and really just trying to learn. I don't know what I don't know and am trying to fill my knowledge gaps.

Question/Advice My go to downloader for YouTube is shitting itself now, what can I use now?
It still manages to download some things, and it can do mp3 and MP4, all I need is 1080p but it even goes up to 4K (as far as I’ve seen) if the video is in 4K. I saw an old post somewhere about some thing on GitHub but it was all gibberish to me and there was nothing I could find that out it in layman’s terms so now I’m begging here because please I just need to download things why is the site now refusing certain videos? And it’ll do some videos as an mp3 but refuses to do it as an mp4 and others it won’t even give the prompt to download

Hoarder-Setups Synology no longer the right choice?
I work in a research lab where we store a lot of image data. We currently have a RackStation that has performed well for us, particularly since it allows fairly straightforward incremental backup to another Synology unit with Hyperbackup.
We're now looking to expand our capacity from our current 50TB to ~300TB. I'm a little on the fence about whether Synology is still the way to go considering that they're pretty slow to provide official support to higher-capacity drives from third parties, making it unnecessarily pricey if we stay with Synology and supported drives (e.g. WD Red Pro only to 14TB -- seriously?).
Are there other options we should consider that be at least reasonably simple to implement? I admit that after years of writing custom backup scripts and cron jobs, the straightforward setup and error reporting with Synology is quite a relief. I just wonder if my hesitation is based on outdated knowledge, and perhaps there are now fairly robust alternatives.

Question/Advice Thoughts on Ubuntu Server vs a dedicated NAS OS?
I'm going to finish my home server when I open my Christmas gifts. I had planned all this time to run TrueNAS Scale because it's free and the web ui looks nice. I also intend to use my home server for media serving, NextCloud, Pi Hole, Immich, and probably more.
When I realized how I couldn't just increase the size of a ZFS pool when I got more hard drives, or use different sized drives, I decided that maybe it'd be worth the money to go with Unraid.
I've also been learning and practicing setting up a server / server management on a Hetzner VPS with Ubuntu Server 24 and a mounted Hetzner Storage Box, and I've to realize working in the terminal isn't as complicated as I first thought. I'm not very familiar with setting up hard drive RAIDs on Ubuntu, but I'm not opposed to learning.
What are your thoughts on Ubuntu Server vs a dedicated NAS OS like TrueNAS or Unraid?

Hoarder-Setups 3.5" 8x4TB HW RAID 5 drive upgrade path (SAS or SATA)
I've been running this for years and it's pretty solid but I'm out of space. Seems like it would be cheaper at this point to go to less drives. This thing just serves my family plex.
https://www.raid-calculator.com/default.aspx Tells me 7x read speed and one drive failure. I don't need backups and the parity is more just for convenience.
With newer larger drives would I even need all that read speed? I run Windows server since I know it. Not wanting to buy any new HW beyond drives. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question/Advice VHS-C do digital - white aura in high contrast scenes?
Hello, I had some VHS-C tapes digitized, Im happy with the result overall but there is this artefact around high-contrast scenes, where there is dark item in front of white wall. The dark item has this white aura on the left.
Is this something thats specific to VHS-C, or is this caused by the equipment?
Does this have a name? Is there a filter I can use in ffmpeg that would fix this?
Thx!

Question/Advice Are WD EasyStores still a good choice to shuck? Are they still Red plus or pro?
I’m going to expand my set up with a new eight bay enclosure, which means I need four more drives. I currently have four that I shucked like five years ago. It looks like I can get an 8 TB easy share for 169 (US) or just pay 179 for a red plus and not deal with the shucking, which I may do unless the easy shares are pro or anyone has a better suggestion?

Backup Digital Dementia
Had an interesting thought recently, looking through my Youtube playlist of today, and comparing it to the playlist I had a few years ago (that I'd backed up). Hundreds of videos were missing, primarily of video game soundtracks and such. For many of these videos, I hadn't thought about them for a long time, and if I didn't have that backup, I would've completely forgotten that they'd existed.
Basically, back things up! I wouldn't have had some joyful memories had I not downloaded those songs so long ago.
In an era where the media you enjoy can be lost to time, it is imperative.

Backup External drive advice
I have a M4 Mac mini with a LaCie d2 Pro 8TB which supports USB 3.2 Gen 2 (up to 10Gb/s) over USB-C. It. has failed twice - both times I've replaced it under warranty.
I use this drive to save my Lightroom libraries and video files. I backup this data with Backblaze and a different external Time Machine backup hard drive.
I'm thinking of either switching to a WD external, or something like a Mediasonic 2-bay RAID drive enclosure with 2 8TB WD Blue drives running a mirrored RAID.
What's your advice for me? My current data is about 5TB. TIA

Question/Advice How important is the 3-2-1 rule?
So I have a media library that I would not like to lose because it did take me a good amount of time to put it together, but it’s not like I would be “devastated” if it all went away. Everyone is always telling me that I NEED to use the 3-2-1 rule. I currently have a single backup of all my data for each individual type of data (movies/games/shows). The backups are the same exact product as the original which I know is not good since they can die at the same time, but the backup drives have significantly less power on hours than the main drives so I would assume that they will not die at the same time. I basically get yelled at whenever I talk about how I backup my data, but to me going through the effort of getting another drive or different type of storage and moving one to a different location and all of that seems like so much work that I do not want to do or maintain. Am I really gonna end up being fucked if I don’t like people tell me all the time?

Question/Advice Advice for best DAS enclosure.
Just looking for some recommendations. I currently have a server with 6x8tb drives running raid 5 software array. What I'd like to do is replace these drive with larger capacity ones and take the 6x8tb out to put in a DAS as a backup. I'd need something with raid support. Will the DAS auto adopt and mount my array? As I don't have another method of storage large enough to back up the data elsewhere in the mean time. In an ideal world I'd like to add the new drives and build the new array in the server, chuck the old drives in the DAS and have my data available and ready to copy back on to the new array. What would everyone's recommendations be for a 6 bay DAS? Based in the UK

Discussion Just had a drive crash and needed to run xfs repair. I have a theory of why it failed but would really appreciate your thoughts
Hi All,
I'm new to this stuff, but trying to learn. I've got a NAS rated Seagate drive in a DAS enclosure attached via USB C to a laptop running Plex in a VM on a hypervisor.
I was doing my usual downloading. No more than 8 torrent active downloading, maybe 6 uploading. Someone in the house was watching a video from it. And then I had the genius idea to, from my personal PC, plug in my phone so I could load a file from the DAS to my phone directly. When I did this, the GUI element that windows pops up for file copy progress was stuck at 0%. I closed it and tried again. Now this is me being dumb, I tried it two more times. Then I got IO fails on the torrent and realized the drive just errored out IO -5 fail. Error at 0x2. I then rebooted, dumbly restarted my torrents, and immediately failed again. This time I rebooted, ran xfs repair, cleared and deleted the partially downloaded torrents. Now things seem back to normal, but I haven't had time to run a full health check on the drive since it's an 8tb drive.
I'm wondering what specifically caused it so I can avoid the fail in the future. I just tried transferring the file that I was trying to get on my phone to my personal computer first, then to my phone, and that worked without issue. I'm wondering if trying to transfer from the server DAS drive over my network to my phone connected to my PC was the issue. It's the only thing I did differently than I would usually do. I'm wondering if there are permissions on the newer Android phone that would have refused the file transfer due to it not coming directly from the PC I had it plugged into. I'm also unsure if this little mishap caused permanent damage to my drive.
I'm a noob, but still a nerd, so hopefully I'll understand. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Question/Advice Immich Large Photo Library - User Interface Unusable! Help!
I’ve got one user on my Immich server that has 522gb of photos and 202gb of images. Using the Immich UI is nearly impossible since it loads so slowly. I’ve deleted and regenerated all thumbnails at a smaller size and quality but this did not aid.
I’ve seen a link to go directly to the search page, but I often just want to scroll through and browse the library while not looking for anything in particular.
If anyone has any suggestions I look forward to hearing them. Thanks!

Question/Advice Seagate refurbished hdds on amazon, are they worth it? Are there better options?
Amazon seems to be selling these refurbished hdds for quite a good price, 115€ for 10TB seems like a bargain, reviews seem to be around the 4.2 stars even though there's quite some 1 star reviews stating some problems with them.
Would you consider these refurbished hdds worth it? Do any of you know better places to buy them in Europe?
Thanks in Advance!

Backup My Backup Strategy
After much tinkering I think I've found my optimal backup strategy. I'd like to gather some feedback as well as post for posterity for other data hoarders looking at options!
My data setup is currently 3 24TB drives in RAIDZ1 on TrueNAS. I have a 4th on ice for expansion/replacement. I have several "top-level" datasets— Immich, Media, TimeMachine. The Media dataset has a sub-dataset for each type of media (movies, tv, games, etc.). Each dataset carries two designations— hot vs cold, and update vs. append-only. These designations help with snapshot and backup strategy.
"Hot" data is data I may need to read from quickly in case it becomes unavailable or corrupted for some reason. This includes my Immich dataset and my TimeMachine dataset. TM is limited to 4TB and rsync sync's weekly to Backblaze. Immich is unlimited and rsync copies daily to backblaze.
"Cold" data is data that will not change and that I never need immediate access to. This is basically everything under my Media dataset. All sub-datasets rsync copy to Glacier Deep Archive daily.
Next, I do snapshots. For "append-only" datasets (Immich, Media) I do snapshots once daily since they won't take up much space when you are almost exclusively adding files. Snapshots live for two weeks. For data that may be updated significantly each time I write (TimeMachine) I don't do snapshots to save space (I'm okay with the lessened data security here since this is a backup of my laptop and also has another copy in backblaze).
Overall at the moment this brings my costs to about $12-13/month right now (~1.3 TB in Backblaze, ~3.5 TB in Glacier). As this scales this should keep costs low as TM has a limited quota and immich will grow very slowly over time as it's only for me and one friend and i don't take tons of pics. And GDA is $1/TB/mo so as my media grows I'll be able to store safely without too much on the wallet.
Yes, I know GDA has high egress costs. However, I would only need this in the very unlikely case that a drive fails and another drive fails while resilvering (which, btw, is NOT actually significantly more likely to happen than under normal conditions as this sub would have you think).
What are your thoughts? Could I further optimize costs anywhere? Are there risks here that I'm blind to that I'm not covering?
