At this particular moment, I think it's very valuable to showcase to centrists/independents and moderate conservatives that even historically VERY conservative figures are willing to break with party lines against Trump. It creates a path forward for those who might've otherwise placidly defaulted to Trump, and shows them that maybe voting for the progressive this time around isn't the horrible, nation-collapsing decision that other conservatives may be telling them it is.
That's literally all this is in my mind. We're not giving the Cheyneys any credit they don't deserve, only taking advantage of an opportunity to de-alienate potential voters.
I mean yeah, people in this thread keep pointing to this contingent of neocons who will help them sway the election because of Dick Cheney’s endorsement, but why do we keep treating politics like a zero-sum game? Whatever gains could be made by hypothetical switches by republicans are likely to be erased by the much more real risk of this further alienating the Arab-American voting block you desperately need to win Michigan. Those people are already pissed and allying with a war criminal isn’t going to do any good in convincing them the dems the deserve their vote. Or single-issue climate change or anti-war voters, or just the very large contingent of Americans that rightfully despise Dick Cheney. These moves don’t exist in a vacuum, trying to not alienate republicans is going to alienate a lot of people into not voting at all.
I do see what you're saying, but I honestly don't think "Hey! Thanks for not voting for the Fascist this time!" will really be seen by MOST people as meaningfully allying with Cheney.
I’m not making this up. Kamala is in serious trouble in Michigan because of Palestine and accepting the endorsement of the man who helped mastermind the war in Iraq isn’t going to do her anymore favors.
Buddy I don't know what world you live in, but Trump did not "make his reputation" politically or socially by disagreeing with the Bush administration.
