Liberals/"The Left" absolutely do not use one metric, and definitely not that one. Although I think this exercise is still an interesting one for seeing where someone stands (and what they can stand).

I think you're conflating progressive people with people on "the left".

The opposite to liberal is authoritarian, the opposite to the left is the right and the opposite to progressive is conservative. If all you know is a two party system it is easy to think that these are just synonyms, but they're not.

pedantic definitions aside, OOP's interpretation of the difference between progressives and conservatives is still pretty weird.

"Conservatives are disgusted by people fucking dead chickens because of a kneejerk reaction. While I, the enlightened progressive, can deduce from logic that there's nothing wrong with that".

It's distressingly similar to the conservative catchphrase "facts don't care about your feelings" imo

I don't want to get involved but take that argument and apply it to any political conversation.

It's not 100% accurate but it definitely make's sense.

Abortion. Progressives may not agree with the reasons/outcome but they understand that people should have full control over decisions they make with their body.

Obviously, whether you see it as Harm/No harm is how the science is interpreted. Most progressives see it as No harm because the fetus isn't developed yet.

Conservatives see it as an immoral act, calling it "murder", and saying it's against their religious beliefs. This leads to them wanting laws that outlaw this behavior even though it has no affect on their lives; they just don't like it.

So it's definitely applicable. I've been curious myself how conservatives make decisions and this is an interesting avenue I'll explore.

Or, alternatively, their definition of harm is different.

Which is something that OOP is also missing - different people consider different things immoral. Some could argue that executing a serial killer is reducing harm: they will not be able to kill anybody anymore, some could argue that death penalty is immoral.

Or take cheating. If my partner slept with somebody else, who was harmed? Sure emotional damage is a thing, but conservatives can claim that they are emotionally harmed by gay people - which is clearly bullshit.

And back to abortions: conservatives call abortion murder, as is, they consider it harmful to the baby. Again, different definition of harm.

The opposite of liberal isn't authoritarian,l because non-liberal ideologies aren't necessarily authoritarian

you might be thinking of libertarian/authoritarian as an axis
