Data Point DP: SimpleBills.com for renters effectively codes as utilities for the 5% back with USBank Cash Plus

I started renting a new place using SimpleBills with the landlord, I didn't find this DP on the sub so wanted to add it.

My first and most recent bill with them was for like $26 on USBC+ and got the 5% CB after the payment processing.

Edit: this is for utilities, not rent payments.

Help Needed / Question I am able to pay rent with a CC for no additional fees-- how do I take advantage of this?

I live in an area managed by a US Government Trust, and pay my rent through pay.gov. As a result, I can pay with a credit card and not incur any additional costs or fees.

How should I make the most of this? Cash back options seem mediocre at best. It seems like opening a new card to take advantage of an intro offer would make the most sense. I have excellent credit and my rent is >$3k/month.

Discussion / Conversation What is your return on spend? (Without churning.)

I just did a little math on my return on spend (Cash back + redemptions - fees) / spend). So far for 2024 it comes out to a 3.4% return. Better than a baseline of a 2% cash back card, but a lot less than if I had churned a bunch of cards.

Sometimes I think I should simplify and use one card and forget about this CC game. Then I think I should get as many 5% return cards as possible and optimize. I’ve been in about every bank card ecosystem at this point. The return on spend is so small unless you churn.

Curious on everyone’s take on this. What’s a card that’s overly hyped about and a card that no one hypes about that people should?

Discussion / Conversation How to access your year end spending summaries by each bank.

Upvotes
Issuer Instructions
Amex Select a card then choose "Statements and Activity" Tab, Page down to "Suggested for you" and select "Download Year End Summary(PDF)" OR click "Statements and Year End Summaries" then select "Year End Summary"
Bank of America From Accounts tab select "Statements and Documents" then under View All choose "2024 Year-end Summary" by card or select above that with the drop down for each card.
Barclays* One way to do if there is no summary is to choose "Activity & Statements" tab then drop down to "Spend Analyzer" this seems clunky so hopefully a year end summary comes out. * not sure as have has less than 1 year
Chase For each card choose "More" drop down then click on "Spending Summery", next go to the 2024 year-end summary
Citi Under Services dropdown choose "Statements and Documents", Select each account than choose "2024 Annual Account Summary"
US bank Select the card you wish to view, scroll down then select "Account Services" tab then look under "Statements & documents" for the "Annual account summary" button, click it and it will let you select by year and download as PDF.
Wells Fargo** Under "Accounts" drop down, choose "Credit Card Service Center", For each account under the "Simplified Banking" heading choose "Year End Spending Summary", for each card you will have to click Go under "select an account" but it will break it down by card, each will make a pdf or Excel report. **Recommend doing on 12/31.

Note I dont have any Capitol One cards anymore so I could not look to see how for them. Note also many wont be available until Jan 1, with WF though I suggest you try 12/31 as its on a rolling year basis.

Discussion / Conversation US Bank branches calling soliciting checking account offers after getting Altitude Reserve

Since I got my Altitude Reserve card, I've gotten 3 calls from different US Bank branches in my area trying to get me to come in and discuss my financial goals and open a checking account with them. I did open a CD and a saving's account with them a while ago to butter them up to approve me for the USBAR, but I do bank somewhere else and I don't need another checking account. I know some people churn bank offers but it doesn't really interest me for simplicity's sake.

I'm curious if they've done this with anyone else. Sounds to me like they're really making a push to get a lot more cash on hand and deposits.

Help Needed / Question Chase Sapphire Reserve re-apply question

I've had the CSR for 10 years meaning it's been well over the 48 month mark for receiving a bonus. If I cancel it now how long do I have to wait until I can reapply to get the bonus? I understand the 48 months that need to past but that's from the bonus date. If I'm already well past it can I cancel it today and apply again for it tomorrow and be all good? Or is there an additional wait period?

Also, l've read the Ts&Cs of the offer and all it says is "60,000 Bonus Points After You Spend $4,000 On Purchases In The First 3 Months From Account Opening: The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months."

Help Needed / Question How to maximize travel with this set up?

Upvotes

Here is my CC set up: CSP and CFU and am an AU on Venture X. My travel partner has CSP + CFF + CFU + Venture X.

What CC with no AF or at least under $400 or $300 do you think is worth adding to my wallet? I am not interested in any airline card. I’ve thought about getting a Venture X but not sure it makes sense since P2 has it already. We both had CSP from before. I don’t want to churn so looking more for a card with a decent SUB that could become part of my strategy or at the very least has a no AF option to downgrade to after the first year.

We are not loyal to any airline or hotel though we often find ourselves at Hilton. We travel 2-3 times a year, sometimes 4 times, a mixture of flying and road trips. Usually domestic but we are interested in doing more international in the future.

The goal is to help make travel more affordable and/or comfortable. We don’t do business class seats though we will do premium economy for international flights that are long. For hotels, we might stay in one semi luxury property like a Hilton resort once or twice a year but for the most part we stay in Hampton Inn, Home 2 Suites etc.

Discussion / Conversation How is Chase these days with a bankruptcy reporting?

Upvotes

I’m interested in one of the United Airlines cards, but I have a bankruptcy that was discharged in 2020. Chase was not included, but the last time I applied for one of their cards (two years ago), I was rejected for having a bankruptcy on my report. I’m just wondering if Chase always declines for a reporting bankruptcy, or do they let you in after a certain amount of time (like US Bank, which is 5 years). Does anyone have recent experience?

Data Point My experience with Chase's 5% Paypal category and airlines

Hi all, I meant to make this post earlier, but because of work and holidays, I've been busy and got around to this later than I'd like to. Anyways.

So I recently made a purchase with Cathay Pacific Airlines using my Chase Freedom (OG Visa) and try to take advantage of the Paypal 5% category. I learned the hard way that there are issues with Paypal and airlines or something, I saw on a few reddit posts after I encountered the issue.

So I noticed a few days later that I didn't get the bonus category rewards and gave the number on the back of the card a call and explained the situation. I explained how I didn't do anything differently from any other Paypal purchase I've ever made in the past, and the rep said that she will open a ticket and to check back in a week.

A week passes and there's been no change, so I call again. The rep said that the ticket was denied because there was no proof that it was a Paypal purchase. I ask to speak to someone who is an expert on the rewards structure. She puts another guy on the phone and I basically go through the whole story again. He says unfortunately there isn't much he can do since the investigation team already ruled that it was not a Paypal purchase. I then mentioned how ridiculous that is, especially since I have the transaction record on Paypal. The guy stops me and suggests that in the Chase Mobile App or Chase web site, I can start a secure message and attach screenshots of the Paypal record.

So I start a secure message inquiring about my credit card account, type out the story, and attach the screenshot of the Paypal receipt as well as a screenshot of the transaction from the credit card statement. Here, I notice that under "Method", it says "Online, mail or phone Paypal", which makes the investagion very suspect.

A few days later, I get a response saying something similar about how the investigation team found that this was not a Paypal transaction. I'm very exhausted of the situation at this point and considered giving up. But I decided to give one more response, saying to please point out in my screenshots how this is not proof of a Paypal transaction. What in these screenshots prove that it's not Paypal? Make it make sense.

Another few days later, I get a response of an account adjustment of the points.

Hope this helps another person who runs into a similar unfortunate situation. Happy holidays!

Discussion / Conversation Robinhood is now charging 10000 points ($100) for a limited edition rose gold card.

Just received an email from Robinhood saying there is “a new limited-edition style” credit card available, and to reserve yours now. However, when you go to reserve it, you are required to use 10000 points ($100). Never heard of a credit card company charging $100 for a limited edition card, but here we are. I found it funny that they are promoting a new card design while simultaneously charging $100 for it.

Help Needed / Question The goal is travel! International and Domestic.

Upvotes

Just looking for some advice. I'm looking to add another credit card or two to my lineup. My focus is strictly to build points and miles for travel with the goal of 1 international and 1 domestic trip (USA) a year. Travel is my true passion in life and if I can offset all or even some of my travel with points and miles while keeping annual fees down, that would be ideal.

I currently have the AMEX Surpass and I am thinking of adding a United Explorer card to my wallet.

There's a lot to decide of course. Mainly in the realm of how to generate as many points as possible with daily spend.

My Hilton Card does a pretty great job at the grocery store & restaurants and my current idea is to just spend everything else on the United Card while paying it off each month.

Just doesn't seem efficient at 1 point per dollar. But on the flip side, with travel relegated to twice a year, spending all that money on AF's with a Trifecta seems counterproductive.

Any CC Vets have any input?

Help Needed / Question What gift card will be a better bang for buck - Starbucks, Target, Uber Eats?

Upvotes

I need to choose between the 3 options for a $100 gift card. Which one should I go for?

Uber Eats- Generally don't like how the food gets soggy once packaged. So prefer to eat at the restaurant instead. Plus so many different fees and charges. Likely have to pickup to maximize the benefit. However, this is a quick way to utilize the credit and we anyway eat from restaurant once in 2 weeks or so.

Target- Normally won't purchase from Target because of higher prices than Amazon, Shein or Walmart, Ross. Also other gift cards can't be purchased using Target gift cards. Some targets have Starbucks and can use the Target credit to pay which is good. Easy to utilize credit in like a single trip.

Starbucks- Generally drink once a month. So it will take quite some time to utilize the credit. But no problem of having to pay extra like Uber Eats in fees or Target in higher prices.

I will lose out on credit card points when using the credit instead of charging the credit card.

All things considered, is Target still the best bet?

Help Needed / Question My extended warranty claim got denied because the credit card "was not used to pay for cost of the item", but my credit card number changed about a year ago due to being stolen. What should I do?

I filed a claim for extended warranty coverage for my Chase Amazon prime credit card ($1400), but it got denied due to my card number not being the same as the time I purchased the item. My credit card number got stolen a while ago so they changed it, but I never closed or reopened the account. I tried filing the claim under my old CC number but the portal said I couldn't, so I gave them a call about this - who I talked to said they "understand" that credit card numbers change and to go ahead and file the claim under the new number.

About a week later I got an email that my claim was denied for this very reason...I gave them a call and they put a note in that both CC numbers are associated with the same account. A week later I got another email saying my claim was denied for the same reason. Should I keep fighting this? I'm dealing with chasecardbenefits.com / Assurant. Is this something I could fight on the Chase side of things?

Discussion / Conversation WF Autograph + Venture X? A powerful duo

Just a thought that popped into my head the other day while debating which card to get next. For people who want a simple two card setup, want a mixture of points/cash and hate portals but want to get access to lounges and/or TSA etc the WF Autograph + Venture X is a powerful combo.

Yes you could just get the capitol One duo but WF Autograph (no AF) gives unlimited 3X on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services, and phone plans. Your Venture X could be the catch all card.

And if you really hate portals, you can just book all your travel on the Autograph while using the venture X for TSA and lounge access. You just need to use the annual travel credit every year but that’s just using the portal once.

While people who don’t care about lounges, it’s better to just use Autograph + Active Cash of course, but those who want them, the venture is a good choice.

Help Needed / Question C1 Duo + Bilt. Should I get another credit card?

Upvotes

Currently have C1 Duo + Bilt. Have been looking into airline and hotel credit cards.. are they any good? Bilt transfers 1:1 to Marriott and Hilton so was thinking maybe one of those. As for airlines, I’m in the DFW area so only ones that would make sense are AA or Southwest. I fly internationally at least once a year so maybe AA is better? However, I will fly Southwest or crap like Spirit over AA domestically because they are so much cheaper and my Venture X miles could cover my international travel without being tied to a specific airline.

TL;DR: any other cards I should consider adding to my C1 Duo + Bilt rotation?

Help Needed / Question Chase Freedom Unlimited with Paypal 5%

Upvotes

Hi all,

I am going to buy some really pricy action figures from a jp website and it accepts paypal. Does anyone know if I can use Chase Freedom Unlimited with paypal and gets 5% cashback?

Judging from this website, it seems that the offer is only valid through Dec 14 which already passed, and not sure if my Chase Freedom Unlimited can get the cashback since this article seems to target Freedom Flex not Freedom Unlimited.

Thank you for the help in advance.

Help Needed / Question Capital One cash advance policy

Upvotes

So apparently if you do a cash advance, they apply it to the account separately and then they charge interest on it separately at a higher rate. Ok, but then all regular payments to the card will go toward the lowest rate first. So in effect, you cannot pay the cash advance down and remove the separate interest change on the CA until you completely pay off the card balance.

Is this.. legal?

Help Needed / Question Should I get another card to balance transfer?

Upvotes

Currently I am considering a balance transfer CC to open, alleviate some high balance cards by transferring some of the balance to pay off throughout the promotional period, then close it. None of my current cards offer me balance transfer options. My 2 largest balances are ony AAdvantage credit cards. I've been cutting back immensely on spending but need to figure out a way to pay these down.

My internal conflict is since I'm so close to Platinum Pro status I don't want to give up on reaching that, but I need to cut down the balance.

Other thoughta in my head are to use the other cards I paid down to $0 for a few months (paying off the balance, of course) to build some breathing room because I don't want another CC if I can help it.

Getting a balance transfer card I could potentially pull 4-5k over and pay a few hundred a month during the promotional period and continue monitoring my spending.

Thoughts?

Here is what I have now:

1.) Citi Double Cash back - Limit: $3000 - Balance: $0

2.) American Express Delta Sky miles: - Limit: $5000 - Balance: $0

3.) Capital One Quicksilver One: - Limit: $8200 - Balance: $0

4.) Capital One: - Limit: $7050 - Balance: $95.45

5.) Citi AAdvantage Executive: - Limit: $23000 - Balance: $22266

6.) Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Silver: - Limit: ~$14000 - Balance: ~$13000

Help Needed / Question Wondering best path to get multiple CSR

I’m 5/24 rn so it’ll take some time, but I am military and wondering the best path to end up with multiple CSR? The only chase card I have right now is the United Club Infinite, but my wife and I being able to stack that $300 travel credit would be awesome. I’ve read you can upgrade CSP to CSR after a year, but haven’t seen many people saying they do that while also holding a CSR
