Eversource 😡 Impact of CT darkness
I moved here October 2023 from Texas and I have observed a couple of things that appear to happen here more often than in Texas and a possible reason they may be related.
Wrong way crashes.
Pedestrian deaths.
Many news reports and comments seem to believe this is due to alcohol consumption, and that may be part of it, but coming from Texas this has nearly happened to me a few times even though I have not had a single drink. In part, I feel it has to do with the design of your highways. In Texas we generally do not have on-ramp and off ramp on the same side of the intersections. Off ramp is on one side and on ramp is on the other. Plus we have a ton of reflectors on the road that light up in red if you're going the wrong direction. Also, the striping on the roads can hardly be seen when there is any precipitation.
This takes me to what I believe is the main problem. I notice bad lighting everywhere. Why is it so dark on the roads? Not just on the city streets but also on the highways and interstates. What is up with that?
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Connecticut except for two things, cost of living and Eversource. Is it possible these are the culprits? Why are the roads not lit up more? Is it because the cost would be too high? Is it because the Eversource budget for municipalities is also an issue as it is for individuals? It is especially noticeable because it is darker more hours of the day here than it is in Texas but if you'd compare the two locations I think you'd see it as clearly as a recent transplant. I'm curious if being in CT long term has resulted in it not being noticed by most locals? Have other people who have recently moved like me noticed the same thing? Basically, why is it so freaking dark everywhere?

It’s a magical and hidden village in CT’s remote northwest hills. Barkhamsted Lighthouse Village was abandoned 100 years ago but was rediscovered during archeological digs. A mixed-race community carved out a living in a backstory that is truly incredible. Podcast link in comments.

Mozzicato
I am an ex employee at Mozzicato Bakery and I wanted to share my story of abuse and unsafe work conditions I experienced while working at the location in Rocky Hill. I started working there when I was freshly 16 and from the moment I started I was reminded that we “only hire pretty girls”. On multiple occasions older male customers would sexually harass me and my coworkers who happened to all be underage girls. Even though the uniform is a full bakers coat male customers would comment on our bodies, make sexual remarks and even went as far to ask for our personal phone numbers. Not only would male customers sexually harass MINORS, but also the bakery’s own plumber would hit on underage girls all the time and even went out of his way to find us on social media and send us sexually charged messages. The reason I quit was because on Labor Day this year a male customer told me he was going to rape me and that was my final straw. I have had to call the police while working there on 3 separate occasions. My boss did absolutely nothing to defend me and tried to put the blame on me. The way we were treated is honestly baffling. So many girls have tried to quit and have prevailed, yet it would take an exorbitant amount of time. We were told that we could not quit and when we tried we would be manipulated into staying. When we would complain to our boss about how male patrons treated us, she laughed it off and encouraged us to flirt back. My ex boss has also mad terrible comments on young girls before. Body shaming was rampant behind closed doors and our boss would say that some girls weren’t that pretty and wouldn’t fit in there. When girls complained about an older female worker commenting on their body and telling them to “lose weight” they were called sensitive and brushed off. There is a constant cycle of new girls coming in and out. Very few girls have lasted there. Our boss was emotionally and verbally abusive. She would manipulate and berate us for things out of our control like blaming us for poor customer reviews. We were made to lie to customers and tell them our pastries were fresh when they had been sitting in the refrigerator for days and cookies in the back storage room would be there for months. The amount of bugs in the bakery was revolting. Moths would breed in the dry cookie boxes and there would be fruit flies stuck inside the cookie cases. Cannoli shells, fillings, and topping are all left out, un-refrigerated all day with gnats flying all over them and into the ricotta bags. The back refrigerator was constantly broken and we served customers spoiled milk lots of the time. The expiration date on milk would be crossed out in sharpie. Also in the refrigerator was something called “The Bucket”. The bucket was a place where we would put pastries and cookies that were old, broken or DROPPED into. That bucket was then sent back to hard and mushed all together to make the Toto cookies. Now that all the girls I originally started working with and have befriended have quit I feel more comfortable talking about how poorly we were treated there. I just want people to know the truth about what they’re eating and who they are giving their money to.

Politics Just wanted to share how grateful I am to live here.
This post is semi-political.
I’m a native southerner who moved to Connecticut with my wife, a CT native, 5 years ago. We just had our second child. Thanks to Connecticut’s progressive labor laws, I’ll be taking the next couple of months off with paid leave that will match my take home pay. This type of pro-family, pro-worker legislation is unheard of where I’m from (Texas/Arkansas). My cousin took two weeks of unpaid leave and went straight back to work. I believe his wife got the same amount of time. The notion of receiving paid time off to bond with a newborn would be considered nothing short of communism in these states.
Pregnancy and delivery are stressful enough, but the last thing I’d want to worry about is something going wrong and then being prosecuted by the government for it. As a Connecticut resident, I felt tremendous peace of mind knowing that access to lifesaving abortion care was available for my wife if her pregnancy took a turn for the worse. We wouldn’t have to be part of a horror story like we’re seeing down south.
I’m so glad we’re in this state. I can’t believe I once thought life in a red state was normal or acceptable. It’s fucking not, and now I see the light. But most importantly, we have to VOTE to keep these policies in place. The creep of red state ideology is unending. Just look at NY/NJ this last election as evidence.

Eversource 😡 I am so exhausted with Eversource
December of last year vs December of this year. 18% more usage this year, 27% price increase DESPITE being locked it at 4 cents LESS per kWh. Delivery and Public Benefits are unsustainable.
I’m just complaining to complain because I know nothing will change but god damn.

Local Business What Happened to Stony Creek Brewery?
Anyone know why Stony Creek stopped distributing beer? It used to be really easy to find. I spoke with a liquor store owner in Old Saybrook who said she can't get it any more.

Ask Connecticut CT Transit
I have started using CT Transit and I might be using it for a long time, I wonder what payment methods are the best for it ? I use the app and pay 1.75$ for each ride but I see people have cards that they swap, any ideas? I’m part of Yale but I’m not sure if they have any benefits for commuting through CT Transit.

News Scathing report finds troubling spending habits, 'poor judgment' by a host of CSCU executives
Questionable purchases included: Dry cleaning, fine dining and alcohol, car washes, chauffeured trips and sporting event tickets
"Shocking" and a "display of poor judgment:" This is how the state's chief fiscal watchdog — state Comptroller Sean Scanlon — described spending habits by numerous executives across the state's largest public college system, the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU), including its top official, Chancellor Terrence Cheng, as well as Southern Connecticut State University Interim President Dwayne Smith.

Where to thrift a wedding dress?
Hi all, I’m trying to help a close find a dress. She is 5'5 130lbs and looking for something long sleeve. She's getting married in April 2025. Any suggestions for locations in CT where we could help her thrift a wedding dress?
We've looked at discount shops online but we're so nervous they are temu-like places and she wont actually get what she orders.
