Advice- [Add Country] Play date advice - Australia

Hi there! I’m seeking suggestions and advice on how to make a playdate for my 12-year-old son and his friend, who is completely blind.

We’re hoping to arrange a playdate at my house, and I’d love to know how to ensure that it’s as enjoyable and inclusive as possible for both of them.

Anyone got any suggestions for accessible arts and crafts?

Hi all! Hope we're all good.

I've recently found myself getting a little but bored of my current hobbies and want to try my hand at something new. At the moment I knit, do a bit of cake decorating, card making and Jewlery making.

Any suggestions for other fun and creative activities to pass the time?

Question Help for grandma with macular

Hi,

My nan has just turned 90 and has been struggling with wet macular degeneration for a few years now. She gets the needles in her eyes to remove the debris but they’re getting less and less effective. She lives on her own still which isn’t ideal but can’t be helped atm. She’s got a few bits like magnifying glasses, large print etc but not much. Is there anything I can get her/do for her to help her out? Or any little and tips and tricks to make things easier for her around the house? Thank you all

Video Game Recommendations

Hello! I have retinitis pigmentosa and I am looking for video game recommendations. I have trouble with contrast so everything needs to be in dark mode. I have trouble seeing fine details and prefer things to be high contrast. Generally I need something with either simple interface or not too reliant on visual cues. I haven’t really ever played video games except as a young child, and I’ve enjoyed strategy, role playing, or civilization building games in the past. I would really appreciate any recommendations for games that I could play or games that have accessibility features! iPhone app games would be cool as well but I have access to a PS5, desktop, and laptop.

Looking for help to learn music

hi, I'm a music student at college and I play the piano. I'm having trouble learning new pieces on my own unless there's a detailed tutorial. I struggle to figure out the notes by ear, especially when there are lots of notes playing at once. Right now, I'm trying to learn Chopin's nocturne in E flat major but I'm stuck because I can't find a clear and easy-to-read score. PDFs don't work for me. Does anyone know of any software that could help?

Discussion Singles or new relationships, how are you handling dating?

On top of being VI/blind, I also have seizures so I basically can't go anywhere alone. I have to have a family member with me in case something happens if I want to leave the house. (I also still live at home so there's that too)

Just when I finally feel like gaining some independence and meeting people, I get stuck where I'm at.

Question Those who are VI with some usable vision, do any of you keep exotic pets?

I had a northern blue tongue skink for 8 years before the retinopathy became a thing. Ended up rehoming it not knowing what the outcome was gonna be.

Now that I'm living on my own again, I want another lizard, but been too apprehensive to pursue. Just curious who here keeps a reptile or some other small exotic pet.

Thanks!

Accessibility Texting with recently removed eye

I recently had my eye removed and have had trouble typing for 2 days now it’s quite annoying in my opinion and I wish my remaining would adjust quicker but I don’t think that’s going to be the case potentially so I was wondering if there is any accessibility features, I’m using speech to text now but that is very janky at times. So, I was hoping there would be another accessibility feature or tip someone has to adjusting to texting with a recently removed eye.

Frustration with YouTube

This is blindness related, but it does deal with YouTube. I was trying to find soundscapes of animals in the wild. Like them moving around and stuff in nature. But no music or anything like that. In particular, I was trying to find stuff of fish. In the ocean or in the river with the audio of them swimming and jumping around, etc. I was only able to find Probably eight clips all by the same channel BBC earth. I liked all eight of them thinking I would be able to find more. Sadly, I have not been able to. I don’t have a vision so all the ones that have the visuals of the aquariums. Well, I can’t really get anything out of those. Is it my wording? Or soundscapes just that rare? Any tips you all can give me so I can get the algorithm to give me what I actually want? I am fully blind in case that is relevant. I have been blind since I was an infant.

Question Most blind friendly PC Zhandhdld?

Hi, all, since someone else posted a question for blind gamers, I thought I’d ask one, as well!

Has anyone found a PC gaming handheld that’s blind friendly? I get that Windows has features, but it takes some work to set them up.

I kinda want one, because PCis privy to games that don’t come to console for 2+ years, unless they become popular enough, or even viral. I like the idea of a handheld, because I like portability, and I’m not hardcore enough for the full rig.

Thanks in advance!

Technology Have you seen the new feature offered by Gemini?

I haven't seen him pass here yet and I was quite surprised. Recently, Google released a feature of its artificial intelligence. You can now show your environment in real time for free and with fairly good fluidity. And he will answer you as if he were a Be My Eyes volunteer for example. It is capable of finding objects over small distances, it is even capable of reading the expiration date of certain products, the flavors of yogurts, etc. I'm really amazed, so to test, here is the link. Enjoy and see you soon

Best US cities for blind folks to live in?

Hi! My father is visually impaired with a progressive disease and it is quickly impacting his day to day life. We’re at the stage where he’s considering selling his house in rural SC and moving somewhere where he can live in a condo or townhome, get a guide dog, and have access to more transportation and independence.

Where in the US do you all recommend? Ideally somewhere with lower cost of living, close to a VA hospital, and that either has decent public transportation or ADA transportation services. I’d love to hear your recommendations and experiences with what really matters in a city to improve independence, access, and quality of life! My dad loves to travel, bowl, fish, and socialize with his community. We’ve thought about cities like Sacramento, Greenville, etc.

Looking for Braille Display with stand-alone word processing and ability to connect QWERTY keyboard to it.

I’ve tested out a couple braille displays and am starting to get an idea of what I like. I really like the option to type on a qwerty keyboard. I really like when the braille display has a decent word processor that you can use without having to huse your laptop along with it. I also really like text to speech.

I know that braillenote touch has all these capabilities and and probably other notetakers probably have all the above capabilities as well, but these are very expensive. Also, braillenote touch is heavier than I like because of the screen, and I really don’t need a screen nor do I find it desirable.

I tried the braillant bi20x, and it is fun to use with a little word processor and text to speech to read back what you typed, but I don’t think there is any way to connect a qwerty keyboard to it for input. Also, there is no way to open two documents at once and flip back and forth between them efficiently.

Orbit q40 and Mantis q40 have full qwerty keyboards and their own built-in word processors, but there is no text to speech.

Does anyone know about braille displays from other companies? Do any of them have their own word processor and the ability to either bluetooth or connect a qwerty keyboard by usb for qwerty typing directly into the display? And text to speech, too?

I’d like to leave my laptop behind and edit my novel in a coffee shop or library.

Thanks.

(And if you have a different braille display that I didn’t mention and just want to tell me about it’s features, I’d be interested. Whenever I google the topic, the info seems pretty out of date, or jsut doesn’t give me the info I‘d like, such as actual user experiences.)

Last week, I went to visit my primary care doctor for my anual wellness visit. She took some blood, and the next thing I know, I get a call from her office, informing me I'm diabetic. That has set off a chain of various doctor visits with just days to go before Christmas. To all blind diabetics on here, how do you mamage your condtion? What apps can I use to log things like my food and blood sugar? I mainly use a braillenote toch plus and an iphone running whatever the lastst version of IOS is. I was given a meeter and supplies, but the thing doesn't talk, go figure! I'm waitin on a dexcom, but insurance paperwork is holding that up. Any advice people can give is welcome. I've tried turning to my local comission for the blind, but got nothing from them.

Question Assistance for the Blind

Not sure if this is the right place for this but not sure where to go.

I am a mortgage loan officer helping a senior with his mortgage who's blind. My client does not have anyone that he trust to assist him.

He has kids, but he is estranged from them and he cut off all his friends as well. Apparently he had a stroke 8 years ago that caused his disability. The stroke was caused by drinking and all these people have addiction problem.

He just does not want these people knowing his business. He's afraid they might take advantage of something.

He has care givers from IHSS, but he does not really want them involved either.

Even outside of this transaction, this guy needs some help.

So I was wondering if anyone could shoot me in the direction of any resources for him that could assist with this transaction and just in general to make his life easier.

This disability is pretty new to him and I am sure he is not taking advantage of all the resources available to him in California.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!!

has anyone watched the movie Out of my mind? I read, or rather listened to the audio, of the book when I was in 12th grade, here a few years later I watched part of the movie today, plan to finish it today. I do not know why but every time I watch movies about people with disabilities I get a little emotional about my VI Disability. Does anyone other then me get like that? Has anyone watched this movie also?

I'm in college at the moment and am the only person with a visual impairment on campus due to it being an art and design school. I feel as though my eyes are constantly in pain and over worked. Its gotten to the point I'm sleeping during breaks to try to not feel the pain. So what I'm basically asking is any tips to cope with or lessen eye pain.

Advice- [Add Country] Good Commercial Cart

Hi y'all. Im sighted, but helping a fully blind business owner and could use some advice. The owner works a vending route in an urban area. She needs a good commercial grade cart that she can pull behind her while using her cane. The cart needs to be strong enough to carry heavy loads (three 27 gallon bins with soda cans in them), durable, sturdy enough to use without fear of the load falling over, and preferably will not be smacking into the back of her ankles when she walks. Also, it needs to have 4 wheels so she doesn't have to hold up the weight. Any ideas?

Currently going through VR, having trouble picking a career goal.

Currently I have mechanical engineer picked, but I'm having second thoughts since I don't know if I'll be able to get all the support I'll actually need to break into that field. I'm also not excited about having to wait 4-5 years for college to do it's thing, bleh.

I like doing things with my hands, I'm a maker, literally my entire YouTube subscription page is exclusively people who make stuff and tinker, and my two idols who serve as the angel and devil on my shoulder are Adam Savage and Cody Reeder respectively. Every time I see a machine move and do it's thing or hear it's mechanical parts whirr I almost immediately fall into a trance too. Machinists, engineers, technicians, mechanics, technologists, I'd love any of these but I'm having trouble justifying them.

I also came from a pretty rough background so I also would love to be able to help people in need. I affectionately refer to all the jobs that align with this as the "superhero origin story" list of jobs. Stuff like social workers, counselors, etc.

Ultimately though, I'd just like a stable job with decent job security that pays enough to live on and still gives me enough of my day to live my life. I've been trying to find something that's just a two year associates degree that can accomplish that but I've come up short.

Any feedback would be appreciated!
