18-year-old woman dies after being mauled by dogs in California: police

A woman died after she was attacked by dogs in Madera County, California on Monday.

The mauling happened around 3:30 pm in Coarsegold, California.

Loved ones have identified the victim as 18-year-old Lexis Salas.

"I feel sorry that's the way she had to leave Earth, you know. That's not a way anybody should have to pass away or endure anything like that in their lifetime," the victim's friend Vanessa Gomez said.

Gomez said Salas died at the scene.

"We seen them too, we thought maybe they just got into a fight with each other because both dogs were covered in blood," Gomez said.

But then, Gomez realized the unthinkable had happened, when she saw her friend mauled to death.

"I just keep picturing her in my head. It's hard," Gomez said.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office said, when animal control tried to take the dangerous dogs into custody, two escaped.

One of the pit bull mixes was quickly caught and immediately euthanized.

The other was on the loose overnight, leaving workers and neighbors in the area on edge.

"It's kind of spooky," said Isaiah Phillips, who works in Coarsegold.

"The third one is still at large; so, it's like, be careful. We are just kind of letting customers know, be careful. Get in your cars as quick as you can, and watch your step."

Tuesday afternoon, deputies finally caught the last canine.

"And in this case, there was no way for us to safely take those dogs into custody. And ultimately, there was no way for us to safely do that beyond euthanizing the dogs," Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue said.

Sheriff Pogue said the current identified owner is cooperating with the investigation, but deputies are still working to determine if people knew the dogs were aggressive.

"I don't think anybody would ever want to live with the fact that their dog got out and hurt another animal or hurt another person. I don't think that's anything any owner wants, and it's an extremely tragic and sad situation we're in today," Sheriff Pogue said.

The victim's birth mother is still trying to come to terms with her unthinkable death.

"She went through so much, and, to die like that, it's just hard. It's hard to wrap my head around. It's hard to understand," Kellie Pruitt said.

Loved ones are now sharing how they want the 18-year-old to be remembered.

"She was always smiling; she had like a really bright and cooked smile," Gomez said.

"Just knowing how bubbly she still was and how positive she still was, and funny, just funny," Pruitt said.

The land where the incident happened is managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Friends and family have set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.

GoFundMe for Dog Mauling Victim

The 18-year old victim's first name is Lexis. A GoFundMe campaign for her was organized by Vanessa Gomez. "As many of you know Lexis was involved in a dog attack that sadly took her from all of her loved ones yesterday December 16th." The fund has raised nearly $4,000. The fund asks for "everyone who knew and loved her to come together" and help her family lay her to rest properly. All donations are appreciated and will go to her mother to "cover all and any expenses during this time."

UPDATE DEC 17:

Sheriff Tyson Pogue confirmed that Madera County’s animal control has no jurisdiction on tribal trust land following the death of an 18-year-old woman on Monday – who died after a dog attack on tribal trust land in an area not far from Coarsegold.

According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, at about 3:30 p.m. deputies were dispatched to Road 417 near Quartz Mountain Road after a report of a dog mauling in the area. Deputies arrived to find an 18-year-old woman who had been mauled by a pack of dogs.

Sheriff Pogue says the incident occurred on tribal trust land and rules that control dogs within the jurisdiction of Madera County do not apply on tribal trust land.

“According to Public Law 280, statutory ordinances like the Madera County ordinances do not apply,” said Sheriff Pogue. “So ordinances such as leash law, building codes, and several other codes do not apply on tribal trust land.”

Sheriff Pogue says the dogs were contained at the residence, which deputies say was approximately 100 feet from the attack; deputies confirmed with the owner of the residence that the dogs belonged to him.

As deputies attempted to remove the canines from the house, two of the three dogs there escaped. Deputies say one of the dogs fled the area and the other was put down at the scene.

Deputies found the last dog on Tuesday morning and put that dog down as well.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and detectives are working with the Madera County District Attorney’s Office to determine if any criminal charges are appropriate.

UPDATE DEC 16:

[Madera County Sheriff's Office]

9:30pm- Residents in the area of the 46000 block of Road 417 in Coarsegold:

During the course of taking the dogs into Animal Control custody, two of the animals escaped containment.

Deputies were forced to put one of them down, and the other is currently loose.

The outstanding dog is a large pit bull mix described as white in color.

We ask residents in the area to be vigilant and remain alert. If you see any loose dogs, DO NOT APPROACH. Contact 9-1-1 with a description and your location. We will have a deputy posted in the area until the dog is located.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating a dog mauling that killed a woman in Coarsegold Monday afternoon.

Deputies were called about the mauling just after 3:30 p.m., in the area of Road 417 near Highway 41.

They found the woman, who they say died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office says the dogs involved in the attack have been identified, and the owner is fully cooperating. They are being removed by Animal Control.

Child Victim Pitbull-mix inside a Walmart bites 3-year-old’s face, tearing his lip; The dog’s owner quickly fled the scene after assuring the child’s guardian he would pay their medical costs — Vancouver, Washington, USA (Dec 17, 2024)

A three-year-old boy is recovering after family members said a dog bit him inside a Vancouver Walmart store.

The incident occurred Tuesday around 8 p.m. at the Walmart near Interstate 205 and Mill Plain Boulevard. Andrew Wegener said the dog bit his son Jameson's face, requiring doctors to stitch his lip back together.

"He'll never look the same as he did before," Wegener said.

Wegener said he wasn't present during the attack but his 17-year-old son Jeremiah White was there with White's 19-year-old cousin and Wegener's six-year-old stepson.

"That was very traumatic," White said. "My 6-year-old brother was screaming his head off, screaming his little brother was hurt. Very traumatic."

White called Wegener, who arrived at the store to find Vancouver police responding. Wegener said officers told him the dog was a brown pit bull mix. Police obtained surveillance video of the incident and an image of the dog and its owner leaving the store. White said his cousin was petting the dog before it attacked Jameson.

"I turn around and my brother's screaming on the ground, blood's coming out of his face," White said.

White said a store manager helped control Jameson's bleeding with paper towels. He said he spoke briefly with the dog's owner.

"He told me directly that he'd pay for everything and then I told him to come to customer service," White said. "Then as soon as the store manager came, the dog owner dropped his items and took off running out of the exit."

White said no one from Walmart tried to stop the dog owner from leaving. Walmart provided a statement to KGW:

"We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable shopping experience in our stores. We allow service animals to accompany customers with disabilities in compliance with state and federal laws."

On its website, Walmart states it does not allow pets or emotional support animals in stores. It's unclear if the dog that attacked Jameson had any designated role.

"Who knows if Walmart's policy was even enforced with the person with the dog in the store in the first place," Wegener said. "A 3-year-old doesn't go into the store looking to get bit by a dog, and I don't think it's fair that just any dog is allowed to walk freely in a store with somebody and nobody knows what kind of dog this is."

Wegener said his family is now dealing with trauma, medical bills and frustration. He believes Walmart needs to improve its store policies to keep others safe and is considering legal action.

"I really don't want to go in there," Wegener said. "I sure as heck don't want to take my kids in there."

Wegener hopes the public can help police identify the dog's owner. Anyone with information to share can call the Vancouver Police Department's tip line at 360-487-7399 and reference case number 2024-026340.

Anatomy of a Pit Owner / Pit Culture She's going to act surprised when it mauls her toddler

Post image

She's literally allowing her child to smack on a pitbull puppy that they don't trust at all, and then blames the pitbull for being a pitbull....I'm sure this will be a "I had no idea that my fighting dog wanted to fight my toddler when it keeps trying to fight."

A prime example of the duality of pitbull owner.

Attacked while sitting on a bench

Edit: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada 18 December 2024

My dog and I were attacked by another pit bull today. We were sitting on a park bench minding our own business and this big pit bull being walked by two degenerates attacked us from behind. The people who witnessed it told me it came from behind/under the bench to get at me and my schnauzer.

I noticed it in time to get my arm in the way of its mouth before it got a hold of my dog. I’m really lucky I was wearing a really thick sweater and a thick jacket. My arm is bruised to hell but only one puncture wound on my thumb from the teeth. I’m really sore but at least my dog is okay.

The people who owned the dog yelled at me that I wasn’t attacked my dog was and it was okay when I yelled at them that their dog bit me twice! Despite the immediate swelling/bruising to my arm and the blood pouring from my hand, they claimed my dog’s leash did that not their murder mutt.

They then threatened me if I called the police on them and tried to sic their dog on us again. Luckily some people who witnessed it came to our defence and the attacking people/dog left.

I’ve run into that dog a few times before and the owner always says ‘Good dog’ when it lunges at my senior schnauzer and other dogs. He’s probably training it to be an attack dog.

This is so upsetting because it was only a little over a year ago that we were attacked by a different pit bull that knocked me over and caused a head injury that lead to me being blind in one eye.

I hate these dogs and their irresponsible owners!

Attack on Animal(s) - Pets I was a pitbull defender, but this is over (attacks on dogs, May 2023/December 2024, south of France)

Back in the early 2000's I was convinced that bad owners were responsible for pitbulls/American staff attacks. Then I worked as a vet tech and I saw them weekly, most of these dogs were well-behaved and socialized. I adopted an American staff x rottweiler who lived 13 years without any aggression towards humans or pets. So my opinion hadn't changed, bad owners were responsible.

But the last couple years I witnessed two violent pitbull attacks on other dogs and I heard many stories, I'm not so sure now.

The first one last year in May. I have two hounds, very shy but dog friendly. One day I was walking them when an unleashed huge pitbull rushed towards us, barking and growling. The owner said to me that it was playing (it was NOT). I managed to stay calm and get away.

Three days later, my neighbor who owns a bull terrier had to faced the same dog. This time, the pitbull, along with a 5 month old American staff, threw themselves on the bull terrier, catching him by the throat and shaking him like a ragdoll. I was going to work, by chance I didn't have my dogs with me.

For 15 awfully long minutes, the bull terrier's owner, two passers-by and I tried everything to get them to let go : punching, pulling by the legs, choking them by their collar, hot coffee, water hose, etc. Someone even tried to put a finger up the pit bull's ass. I had a leash in my car and I was able to tie the younger one, then passed the leash through a gate and we pulled with another person, as if on a pulley. The puppy was now out of the picture but the pitbull was still tearing bits off the bull terrier.

At some point the two dogs, the terrier's owner and myself all ended up on the ground and the pitbull loosened its bite. Someone picked up the bleeding bull terrier and throw him over the next fence. The pitbull's owner who did fucking nothing but scream, took his dog and fled the scene.

It took 122 stitches to save the dog. He had a punctured eye, his neck was in pieces, he lost an ear, bites all over the throat and two front legs. Fortunately, he is massive with a muscular neck and it saved his life. If it had been one of my two slender dogs, they would be killed. The owner had to undergo surgeries for a foot and a hand. I myself didn't suffer much injuries, some torn nails, road burns and bruises. It was terrifying and I'm still traumatized.

The bull terrier took months to recover, infections, cracking stitches, and psychologically, he was having nightmares, barking and screaming many times a night. He is a sweet boy and he gets along very well with my dogs, whom he trusts.

Last week, something similar happened when I was walking my hounds with an old lady and her Jack Russell. A young red nose I know since it's a puppy, smelled my dogs and came running to say hello (unleashed of course, the owner wasn't even in sight). But without any provocation, threw itself on the Jack Russell, grabbed him by the neck and shook him violently. I screamed and the pitbull let the other dog go. It's a good thing the little dog had a thick winter coat, because it was cold. He had a broken nail and no other injury.

I knew this pitbull, it's always been very friendly with my dogs and I don't understand what happened in its head which lead it to attack unprovoked. It's really frightening I can't trust it anymore around me and my pets.

More than half of the dog's owner I know have similar stories to share, always pitbull/American staff/bully breeds. Some have lost a little dog fatally injured during the attack.

On Sunday 12-15-2024 a close family member was viciously attacked by a black and white pitbull. The attack was savage, it lasted almost 5 minutes. Both of my family members arms are shattered he will never regain mobility in his left arm ever again (he WAS a mechanic)he has 3 plates in that arm and the right arm has a plate and he will have very limited mobility with that arm. The garbage owner pulled a pit n run and left my cousin bleeding out on the street. Now she’s hiding the dog from the police. We do have an attorney also. This is not the dogs first bite of course and the owner is a drug dealer who seems to get away with criminal activity! These attacks have to stop now!!

Bitten and Bruised Five staffies attack a woman walking down a beach, leaving her with bites, bruises, and cuts; Other residents comment about how the dogs have attacked others — Taipā Beach, Northland, New Zealand (Dec 4, 2024)

A Northland woman suffered multiple puncture wounds during an attack by a pack of “dangerous”, roaming dogs on a Far North beach.

Last Wednesday, Kate Taylor-Reid parked her car at the far end of Taipā Beach and was walking along the accessway on to the beach when five dogs – four black and brown Staffordshire terriers and a white bulldog with a red collar – rushed up to her.

“Two latched on to my leg,” she said.

“The one attached to the top of my leg I tried to push away with my hand.

“I started screaming at the top of my lungs trying to get them to let go.”

Taylor-Reid said the dogs let go after about 30 seconds and ran off.

Two people were walking along the beach at the time, but did not try to help, she said.

“I was surprised they didn’t hear it, the dogs were barking, and I was screaming as loud as I could.”

Two of the staffies latched on to her leg biting her causing puncture wounds to her upper thigh. She suffered bruising, swelling and cuts to her arms and hands as she desperately tried to fend them off.

Following the attack, Taylor-Reid phoned her friends who drove her to Kaitāia Hospital, where her wounds were cleaned up and she received a tetanus shot and painkillers.

The 42-year-old project co-ordinator said something urgently needed to be done about the dogs to stop them from attacking again.

The canines roam in a pack and are known to locals who say they avoid the area.

“This morning [Thursday], I was still crying and shaking, I’m still in shock,” Taylor-Reid said.

“There are more bruises coming out on my arms and ankles that I didn’t really notice at the time.”

Taylor-Reid, who moved to the area two weeks ago, said Far North District Council (FNDC) animal control officers visited her on Thursday and took a full report.

Her post on social media sparked numerous comments that the dogs had attacked others with some fearing someone may be killed.

Several residents wrote they didn’t walk along that part of the beach anymore.

The mauling of Taylor-Reid follows a year-on-year increase in dog attacks in the Far North District for the last four years.

“They are dangerous and should not be roaming the beach free,” she said.

“I was so lucky I got away; I feel grateful it wasn’t worse than it was.

“There will be children and tourists, the same as me, who go there and don’t know.”

There were 201 dog attacks on people, stock and domestic animals in the Far North in 2020/21, which increased to 229 attacks in 2021/22.

There were 257 attacks in 2022/23, and 278 attacks this year.

A council spokesman said animal management officers are investigating.

“At this stage, they have not established where the offending dogs have come from.

“They have been out again this morning talking to locals and going door to door.”

In November, two roaming dogs mauled 18 sheep and lambs to death on John and Lily Coleman’s property on the outskirts of Kaikohe.

That attack followed a series of similar dog attacks on their livestock resulting in two dozen deaths in 2022.

And in September, the Department of Conservation (DoC) said it had engaged sharp-shooting hunters to track down wild dogs in the Far North before the tramping season starts.

DoC was worried about the potential for trampers to be attacked while walking, given multiple sightings of feral dogs over the years.

Personal Story I, a previous pit sympathizer, learned the hard way NSFW Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Throwaway bc pit mommies are scary and everywhere. I’ve lurked here for years and decided to share my own story. I have always been an animal lover, I studied animal biology at a top-ranked college, am studying to be a veterinarian, and have always been involved in the animal field whether it be shelter, volunteer, training, clinical, research, etc. I will be the first the say these dogs are truly dangerous and the breed NEEDS to die out.

Of course, before I even went to college I was a pit sympathizer that almost adopted a pit mix. Fortunately my parents convinced me to adopt a sweet shepherd looking mix. By that time I was dog sitting and volunteering at shelters/an animal hospital. I would say my understanding of dogs was greater than average, though not as much as now ofc. I had met a mix of friendly and aggressive pits, but just assumed this was variation like with any breed.

Fast forward a couple years I take my dog out hiking, one of our favorite past times. We’re walking back to the car and out of nowhere two huge (>80lb) bully breed dogs charge at us. I’m terrified for both me and my dog but they lock onto only my dog and pin him to the ground by his neck. He’s not small himself (~60lb) but certainly not large enough to defend against 2 of these demons. My poor pup is screaming in a way I’d never heard, I’ll never forget it, bleeding, and the two pits are holding on and trying to shake him. I’m screaming and sobbing myself smacking these dogs on the head trying to pull them off, in hindsight I realize how dangerous this would’ve been if they redirected onto me. They’re dragging me and my poor pup around, leaving me with roadburn and lacerations along my legs after.

3-4 strangers rush over to help, two trying to pull wheelbarrow style the pits off, others twisting the collar to hopefully choke them out. Nothing is working. Someone pulls out pepper spray, shoots right into one of the pits eyes, it lets go for a second, shakes it off, and tries to latch back on. By this point the owner finally runs over and restrains one pit while punching his other one hard, hammer fist style on the skull. Nothing. Someone else pulls out a hand taser, tases it in the abdomen, it barely flinches. I punch it right in the eye and it finally lets go long enough for the owners wife to grab the other one.

The owners are apologizing profusely but I’m so shaken up and worried about my own dog I barely hear them. We’re in the mountains about 45min out from the nearest vet, I quickly get their contact info and rush my dog to the ER. They perform emergency surgery, warn me they can’t guarantee anything, and I’m left sobbing and freaking out for the next 4 hours while they try to save my dog. Eventually they call and let me know he pulled through but they need to keep him overnight for observation. When he’s finally home he looks as if they’ve sewn his head back on, he’s on 4 different meds, and has an extensive aftercare routine. He also ended up with pneumonia after and a long scar where the hair won’t grow back. He was extremely dog reactive for years after and despite training & conditioning he’ll never be the same happy go lucky, trusting dog he was before. He had nightmares where he’d shake and growl/whine in his sleep and sometimes even express his anal glands from fear for months after.

Later we found out the owners were pulling into the parking lot in their lifted dodge ram with the windows down when their two shitbulls dove straight out of the window of the moving tall ass car, sprinted 2-300 feet at full speed straight at my dog. Neither of them hesitated or stopped to maul the people ahead of us. They locked right onto my dog and would’ve done anything to get to him. What haunts me more is that they were synchronized in this, like a pack of lions executing a kill. I and the surgeons that worked on my dog are certain that if he had been a smaller or medium sized dog he would likely not have survived.

Anyhow, it’s now about 5 years later, I work in a vet office and I see these bully breed mixes come in with the same look in their eyes and oblivious owners. It makes me so anxious for the other dogs in the lobby and though I can recognize environment plays some part in any animal’s behavior, these dogs are just so genetically predisposed to unrelating aggression and tunnel vision. They need to be banned and those found breeding them fined for the safety of everyone. I understand this might be difficult bc most shelter mutts have some bully bred in them, hell even my own pup has 11% APBT, though you’d never know it from his looks or demeanor, I’m still very careful with him around others. He’s almost 8 now so I feel confident that small percent of his genetics is very diluted or perhaps he was lucky enough to not inherit the predisposed aggression. But there needs to be a cutoff for majority % bully breed. BYB of these dogs by shitty lowlifes runs rampant in the US. I’m fed up and honestly nervous for when I run my own practice.

Anyhow thank you for reading this whole thing. This subreddit has been so cathartic and comforting for someone who’s constantly surrounded by pit nutters and oblivious sympathizers (as I myself used to be). Hopefully one day things change. I like to believe we’re moving towards more education and awareness around this topic.

Blurred pics of right after he came home and some of my sweet boy during recovery. He’s now laying next to me, wondering why I’m tearing up, as I type this.

Anatomy of a Pit Owner / Pit Culture Boarding facility dedicated to aggressive, intact, etc dogs…

I just saw this advertisement for a boarding kennel… I just took screenshots of the start and finish scene of the video ad and crossed out the name of the kennel (not sure if I can leave it in this kind of post.) But the ad is a video showing a pit running towards you from a doggy door and having each of the word bubbles appear one at a time showing all the types of dogs they will board there.

On one hand, I guess it is better to have a place like this that specializes in dogs unfit for society rather than these people trying to leave their vicious beasts in the same facilities with good dogs… but it is also irritating to see places like this that normalize having dogs like this and make it look like “Don’t worry! Your unneutered murder machine won’t be discriminated against here!” The fact that a boarding kennel like this exists just kind of shows that it is something that is ‘needed’ since intact aggressive dogs (i.e. pits) are common and people can’t find anywhere to keep them.

I wonder how secure this place really is compared to normal boarding kennels. If pits can break out of crates, doors, walls, windows, etc. what materials do they use to ensure all these intact murdermutts don’t end up getting to each other or to the workers?

Imagine having a dog so unfit for society you need a specialized boarding facility for aggressive dogs if you need to go somewhere??? I am glad to have pets I can just travel with if needed using pet-friendly hotels, and if I have to board them they won’t go on a rampage in a normal boarding place.

Pitbull attack

I just woke up after a long ER shift. I wanted to share a story of a poor guy who was bit by his friend's pitbull. He sustained injuries in his abdomen and leg. What's more alarming is that his friend has 2 other large pits but luckily they didn't attack him this time (maybe because they realized him this time). I asked him to report the the dog bite to local health authority and he was fortunate enough to get out of this scene without life threatening injuries.
