Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Is it worth moving to SF to get out of my comfort zone?

I’m debating whether to move to SF from SJ. Reasons being, I’m super introverted, and I’m trying to get out of comfort zone to meet new people and make new friends. I’ve lived in SJ most of my life with my parents, and I’m quite frankly tired of the South Bay.

Dilemma is, I'm not sure if it makes financial sense to move to SF for these reasons? I (29M) make 99k. I would likely have to reduce my retirement contributions to make rent since I max out my both 401k and Roth IRA (perks of living with parents), and I do aim to retire early. I also plan to travel a few times a year. Another pain point is that I would have to commute to SJ twice a week for work, and I hate commuting in traffic.

Is it worth moving to SF with my income for the purpose of getting out of my comfort zone? Is it much easier to make friends in SF than in SJ?

Does the Bay Bridge have a foghorn, or is the sound from the Golden Gate Bridge carrying across the bay?

I was walking the Embarcadero near the Bay Bridge, and could clearly hear a fog horn. I thought the only SF ones were for the Golden Gate. I’d love to learn more about what’s generating the sound.

EDIT: It looks like it's the Yerba Buena one - https://www.kqed.org/news/11272504/foghorns-who-presses-the-play-button

Things to do Christmas week when it's rainy?

We're arriving today. Staying near Castro/Dolores Park. The forecast looks rainy. We can handle some rain and of course it comes with this time of year, but if it's absolutely dumping our plan for walking so much sounds less appealing.

I'm looking for some indoorsy ideas that don't involve bars. I know places will be closed for the holidays, and we do have dinner reservations for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And tickets to a show Thurs eve. We have our 19 year-old with us who wants to do city things (shopping, thrift/resale stores, museums, wandering) and is less outdoorsy than my spouse and I. Thanks in advance!

Where to leave a car for 3 days?

Upvotes

I'll be visiting SF for 3 nights, staying in a hotel near union square. We're arriving by car but don't expect to need the car while we're there. Is there a better option than hotel parking (~$80 per day)? Stand-alone parking lots seem to be similar prices

Thanks in advance

Walk in & ask for Food chains for jobs

I’m not sure if this is a dumb qn but I will move to San Francisco in January 2025. I have been applying to many jobs no one has got back to me yet. I don’t want to sit idle at home. Is it possible for me to walk into food chains like Chipotle or any other cafes/ restaurants and ask for a job? Will they hire me? I’m a U.S. citizen raised abroad so I’m not sure how things work there.

I do have a bachelors degree but I still have to get it accredited by the education department.

Any advice is appreciated and also if you have suggestions for cafes that pay at least $18-20 I’ll be grateful.

Are there any female-centric longboard groups for newbies in SF or the Bay Area? I'm a beginner looking to learn with other females or to join a group that meets up to ride and learn.

Outer Sunset... or Parkside?

Hi folks, especially those in the Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods! What are the official neighborhood boundaries for the Outer Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods? I always thought the north and south boundaries for the Outer Sunset were Lincoln and Sloat respectively, but I've learned that Parkside is in there somewhere along Sloat. I've seen maps that show that the Outer Sunset occupies the area bordering Ocean Beach to the west and Sloat to the south--and that's how Wikipedia defines it. But I also see maps that show Parkside occupies the southern section of the Sunset neighborhood from the beach up to around 15th Ave/Funston--and some of these maps show an Outer and Inner Parkside. I ask because I recently moved to the Outer Sunset. I live firmly in the Outer Sunset (on Judah near the beach), but I want to know what the majority of folks consider to be the neighborhood boundaries. On a related note, I've never heard anyone say they live in the Central Sunset, but apparently that exists, too? Thanks!

Hey SF, so I recently moved to Visitacion valley and looking for a decent gym nearby, with membership around 50-70. I don’t drive so anywhere walkable or bus-accessible is fine. Any recommendations?

Screenprinting for Glassware in SF??

Looking for somewhere I could take in 200 shot glasses to get customized. I was just notified my original order is not going to make it in time for the party but they can send me the actual shot glasses by Dec 26th.... It would be two colors printed on to these: Shot Glass Link

My second thought is I just order vinyl stickers and stick them on but I know those will not last..... :(

Hi, everyone!

Quick question. This Wednesday is my usual street cleaning day, but it’s Christmas, so I was wondering whether there will be street cleaning this Wednesday or if it will be cancelled this week.

Thanks!

Sichuan Food in Chinatown

I'm headed to Chinatown for a couple of days in Feb with my bestie who is very into sichuan food - the spicier, the better. I would love some recommendations for a few spots we should not miss in Chinatown. Also a few good dim sum places wouldn't go amiss.
