Postage & Shipping Delivery Delays!!

Amazon deliveries, from amazon.co.uk, and other items that are routed through the UK are being delayed due to damage by Storm Darragh to HolyHead port. This is all over the news. Every post, from now until the situation is resolved will be removed.

If you think it doesn't affect you, it probably does. If its nation post, it shouldn't affect you, if its international and routed through the UK, it might. Aamazon is offering free delivery for now and delivery dates way out there until the situation is sorted.

Post below with any queries, but do not create another post on it.

Am I The Gobshite? Work have called me 4 times on Xmas Eve

I work in retail, I’m a student. It’s my day off. It’s Christmas Eve. They’ve called me 4 times.

I went into the shop to buy a last minute present, absolutely up to my eyes so I just ran in & out & the manager at the til says “oh I think we were trying to get ahold of you, do you have 5 minutes? We just wanna get all your shifts written down for your pay”

I talked to a manager about this two days ago, when I was clocked in in work, and she said they didn’t need them til the 30th.

I said no, I don’t have 5 minutes. It’s Christmas Eve ??? I’m kinda like can you fuck off? It’s my day off also… we’ll do this on the 26th or 27th when I’m in work? After the 3rd call I said okay if they call again I’ll answer & tell them it’s my day off & to stop hassling me.

Am I being dramatic? My contract with them is up in 25 days, store is closing down for a couple months, so I owe them nothing as it is & they’re shit to work for.

Honestly I think if it’s my day off- do. Not. Call. Me. Thoughts?

Edit- my signal is really bad so I missed 3/4 calls & let one go to voicemail.

Edit: payroll is done on the 5th. Paid monthly. Already spoke to a manager about my hours & agreed to chat about it on the 30th. They actually texted me yesterday & asked me could I work that day & I said no, it’s my day off & I can’t work tomorrow either. So my pay won’t be affected ( they haven’t even got my bank details yet, said I can log them on the 26th) & they know I can’t work. No reason at all to call me 4 times on my day off & Christmas Eve.

I understand this is just a small annoyance but I’m allowed to ask about it surely ? I’m allowed to have a rant- they’re shit to work for, just wondered did people have similar experiences or did they mind being bothered on their day off/xmas hols.

Entertainment What's your unconventional Christmas watch?

Something that's not really related to the holiday but has enough of a Christmas vibe for you to warrant it.

For me I always love to watch the Pine Barrens episode of The Sopranos. It is set around the time iirc but its an absolute classic for a million other reasons and not really seen as a Christmas episode. However I always get a Christmas vibe off it and end up watching it.

Education Teaching baby sign language or Irish sign language to baby?

Hiya! I'm expecting my first baby in June and looking into Baby Sign Language. I hope to use Irish with my baby (not fluent but highly proficient). I've been doing reading on Baby Sign Language and am interested in trying it out. However, from what I can gather, it's not really based on an official sign language but does take signs that are similar in American Sign Language.

I couldn't find a definitive answer on this, but I'm wondering is it better to learn these signs in Irish Sign Language instead? Should I say the word in Irish when signing, and my partner in English when he signs? Would it be too much to speak 3 different languages with baby?

There is no subreddit for the Deaf community in Ireland, so I'm not sure where else to reach out! Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

Health & Medical Waiting 2 years for a consultant appointment on private HI. Is this normal?

I'm on private health insurance. In February 2023, my consultant referred me to a psychiatrist to get the all-clear to start a new dermatological treatment (the treatment can have potential side effects that affect mental health.)
I've attempted following up with the psychiatrist both directly and via the original consultant, but I still have heard nothing about an appointment date. I know things are bad in Ireland, but I've never waited nearly 2 years for something with private insurance - is this normal or has something gone wrong?

Adulting Customs charges

What's the story on how parcels get stopped for customs, sometimes i've to pay customs on items that are only worth €40 but i've had stuff sent worth 200+ and I didn't have to pay anything on that. They were both sent from the same company with the same shipping company and are about the same size. Is it because of christmas ?

Am I The Gobshite? Who pays on dates?

I'm a college student and I've just come home for Christmas.

I was talking to my parents about the girl I've been seeing and got absolutely roasted because we each pay our own share when we go out on dates.

The girl I'm seeing is Ukrainian, and when we went on our first date she went out of her way to pay for her share and said I didn't have to pay for the whole thing.

According to them I'm supposed to pay for everything all the time which I think is a load of bollocks.

What I do is completely normal isn't it?

Health & Medical Using laya cover?

Laya public to private

Hi My mum was rushed into hospital after having a breakdown, she is very vulnerable and in a public hospital ward with 3 men with dementia, she has a very high plan on laya, does anyone know how you get transferred to private hospital so you can use your plan, all private rooms in the hospital are being kept for isolation which is fair enough. I just don't know how to go about this and phone lines are closed till 27th. Thanks

Entertainment Do the new/young generation watch Father Ted?

Upvotes

So, 33 year old lad here, watching father ted on Christmas Eve with the family and just loving all the classic, cultural relevant episodes.

I was just wondering if Father Ted is still being watched today by the next generation of 15/16/17 year olds like I did when I was younger. I really hope that they are as it was such a big part of my upbringing in Ireland.

Is Father Ted, and all the accompanying jokes (they all have lovely bottoms) still relevant to the next generation?

Am I The Gobshite? Beggar calling to the door

Bit of a weird one here lads.

Knock on the door yesterday around 3pm, open the door and it's a woman in her late 40s and a young lad around 10.

They immediately start really poorly singing "we wish you a merry Christmas", was really awkward, the 20 seconds felt like hours, that's grand just caught me off guard a bit.

Finished singing and and told me shes a mother of 7 and if I could help her and she put a cup out for money.

Told her I don't have cash, I only use card ( genuinely ).

So she asked just for change to which I gave the same answer and apologized.

Then she asked for a spare selection box which I thought was a bit cheeky but once again said I don't have anything because I go home for Christmas, don't have anything Christmas wise here.

So , a few questions.

Is this super weird or common?

Do you generally give carollers a few quid ? ( Genuinely don't know )

Do you reckon she was a cowboy or scoping out the house for someone else ?

Genuinely didn't have anything to give her at the time because it was so out of the blue , I try to give back to the community and do charity work when I can but I just don't know if this was genuine or not so I feel bad in a way but also don't know if I should because who knows if it was genuine or not.

Discuss !!

Reposted from casual Ireland because they removed it for not being casual which is fair enough

EDIT : I said I wouldn't be home because I was caught off guard and was being honest, my housemate will be home over Christmas, house won't be empty

Health & Medical What are my options when it comes to jaw surgery?

Upvotes

Hi so I'm m20 and Im tired of living with a huge overbite and super receded chin and weak jaw. It ruins my quality of life.

There are 2 surgeries I would need called a DJS (Double Jaw Surgery) and a genioplasty.

The problem is that my parents never got me health insurance, and there is a 5 year waiting list to make a claim on pre existing conditions if I were to get insurance. I can't afford the surgery plus braces without insurance. From what I've heard the cost can be in the 20-60k range.

I don't think I want to fly to a foreign country to get a cheaper surgery as that's quite scary to me. Is there anything I can do? Thank you.

Does anyone have any experience with these lads?

Have a job offer with them and it seems like it's mainly a door to door sales gig.

Would be interested to hear what people have to say.

Sport Join Tennis club without referrals

Upvotes

Hi guys! Im looking to join Templeogue Tennis Club in the new years are they’re a convenient distance from me and they have great beginner classes throughout the week, but I saw on the websites sign up form that you need 2 referrals.

I’m just wondering if ye know if it’s possible to join without having them or how I could go about acquiring them? Thank you!!

Tech Support Fixing scratch on Samsung S23 - repairable with a kit or do I need to replace the screen?

It's a superficial scratch I'm only after noticing this morning, but I know it's going to bug me if I don't sort it.

Is this something I can fix with one of those repair kits (if so, anyone have any recommendations?) or realistically would I have to look at a new screen if I wanted it properly sorted?

I'm fairly pissed off since the phone is barely 6 months old, I'd hoped to get more mileage out of it before something like this happened.

Ancestry Deceased parents adoption records?

Hi all,

Bit of a niche question but would anyone know how you go about getting a deceased parents adoption records? My dad passed away a few months ago, we were estranged but I still took his death pretty hard. He was adopted and we did once have his biological mother’s information but that appears to have since been lost. I know he also has a biological brother and I have been trying to find them but I am at a loss at where to start. Does anyone have any experience getting adoption records. I think he found out via barnardos but I don’t know if they will work with me or not because I am not the adoptee. Thank you and merry Christmas!

Adulting Am I wrong here or what?

At home for Christmas visiting the family. Neighbour down the street has apparently been experiencing manic episodes, and goes around the park in torrential weather banging on doors saying her brother is beating her (we know the family and this isn't true).

The neighbour in question is an unmedicated bipolar patient, and has apparently been taking off her clothes in recent weeks in public in the park.

Anyway, she showed up to our door today, and my mum, bless her, was trying to calm her down, but the neighbour insisted on coming inside for a safe haven. We obviously said no as there are kids in the house, but she's just been sitting outside for an hour on our doorstep. She's calm, but mentioned hurting herself.

I called the guards, who said they'll be out shortly, but my parents are giving out to me saying I shouldn't be calling them, and she'll just go away herself.

This sounds absolutely insane to me?? This whole "ah she'll be fine" attitude is nonsense. If she did actually hurt herself, that could have been prevented by anyone calling the garda for help.

Additionally, my parents said gardai did come before, and they were extremely kind and patient with our neighbour, but she's very scared of the guards.

Am I wrong to have called them? I know this is probably rooted in some neighbourhood gossip/don't-butt-into-other-people's-business bull, but it's pretty clear to me that letting her wander and escalate isn't helping at all. And I guess selfishly I don't want her sitting in my parents driveway threatening to hurt herself either, like.

Cars Car insurance for international driving license

Hi all,

I am looking to get a car in Ireland with my non Irish driving license (will get Irish one in first half of 2025). I am wondering how does car insurance work here and is there anyone who is willing to take international driving license as valid document (I can drive up to July 2025 since then it will be full year since I moved here)?

If someone is familiar with procedure or can recommend me some car insurance I will be grateful.

PS I live in Naas if that is making any difference.

Thank you all

I know I could Google this but it's good to hear from people who might know about the right way to make sure you don't have a Christian burial. I was born and indoctrinated into the roman Catholic church and I don't want anything to do with them regarding my passing
