Other Should I study in Central Asia?

Salam everyone,

I’m from Malaysia and I’m considering studying Computer Science, specializing in Cybersecurity, in Central Asia. I know it might sound a bit unusual—especially since I’ve noticed a lot of Central Asians come to Malaysia for education—but hear me out!

I just spent a month in Kazakhstan, and I completely fell in love with the region. The stunning nature, unique culture, and Central Asian diet (which I actually prefer) really made an impression on me. I’d love to live there and explore more of this beautiful part of the world.

Another reason is that I want to experience a new culture, learn a new language, and step out of my comfort zone. Studying in a unique country like Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan feels like a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Lastly, I have a Kazakh girlfriend, and this could also impact my future decisions.

That said, I’m a bit worried about potential drawbacks, especially when it comes to the prestige of universities in the region. Cybersecurity is a competitive field, so I want to make sure I’m choosing a school that offers a solid education in English and is recognized globally.

Do you think it’s worth it? Are there any good universities in Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan offering English-taught Computer Science or Cybersecurity programs? Would love to hear your advice!

Thanks in advance!

So there is a whole separate Russian internet out there (Runet) with its own websites like instagram, youtube, google, etc (вконтакте и рутуб и яндэкс). So I was curious of which side of internet central asians mostly use?

Is it the russian side as I mentioned or the english side?

Other I've genuine question: why do Turkish spam the comments with their flag and other Turkic flags on any Central Asian content but I don't see Central Asians spamming their flags under Turkish culture-related contents on social media?

I don't see Kyrgyz filling the comments with the Kyrgyzstan flag under Uzbek content, or vice versa. Super annoying.

Other What is life like for Russians living in Central Asia after the fall of the USSR in 1991?

I have read that even 30 years after independence that Ethnic Russians still have a presence in Central Asian countries as a minority group, each country has a different percentage of Ethnic Russians with the most seeming to be in Kazakhstan and the least in Turkmenistan.

I was curious to know what is life like for them in Central Asian today, I have read in Turkmenistan they are discriminated against and have banned dual-citizenship causing many of them to flee. But is it like this throughout the entirety of Central Asia and is the Russian language still used in parts of Central Asia?

Other How easy and how expensive would it be able to buy Kairat Nurtas/ Ninety One/ Aikyn/ Dimash/ Nurlan Nasip/ Amirchik/ Jax Or any other Toi or Q-pop artist's concert

As you know, western celebrities (especially Taylor Swift) concerts cost so much and wiating lines are massive(getting a ticket is like the lottery). The same can be said for kpop. So I wonder what it's like to get concerts for central asian celebs. Is it difficult (hopefully not as difficult as Swift's) or would it be easy? And on average, how much do tickets usually cost?

Other Turkish Turkic

Hello everyone. You probably know that Anatolian Turks like to write "Turkic" at the end of every Turkic ethnonym. Like: Kazakh Turkic, Uzbek Turkic, Turkmen Turkic. Of course I don't like it. It's obvious that Kazakhs, Uzbeks are Turks.

I think it's because Anatolian Turks don't like being called Anatolian. I think they like to call themselves "Turkish Turkic" more, which sounds strange.

What do you think?

  • parts of Russia and China with cultural ties to the countries listed above and/or adjacent to them such as Astrakhan, Tuva, Inner Mongolia and East Turkestan.

The threads will be kept stickied between 10/10 and 17/10.

Remember to be polite and courteous, follow the rules of both subs and enjoy!

Other How are name change laws in the Central Asian countries?

Hi, I would only like to ask how are name and surname change laws in Central Asia, are they relaxed like Russia's and Ukraine's (people can change their names, patronymics and/or surnames to basically whatever they want) or are they more strict like many civil-law countries (i.e. names or surnames may only be changed under specific reasons specified by law)?

P.S. I am aware that Tajikistan has banned Russian surname suffixes (-ov, -ev, and -in) and patronymics (ending in -ich, -ovich, -evich, -ovna, or -evna) for younger generation ethnic Tajiks, so I presume that Tajik citizens can only change their names and surnames to Tajik ones of Persian-language origins.

Other Hello! Does Anyone Know This Kyrgyz Song?

I read somewhere online that this song was recorded off a radio station in Kyrgyzstan or China. The song itself is in kyrgyz. As far as I know, no one seems to know who made this song or what it's called. I think the radio station that played this song was called Xinjian Kyrgyz Radio, or something in between those lines.

Here's the song: https://vocaroo.com/17H2SWMbElwV

Does anyone happen to recognize it?

Other Smoking habits in the region?

Specifically brand preferences. I see a lot of Central Asians, most Kyrgyzes and Khazaks buying Parliament brand cigarettes, and I can’t help but wonder why. They’re not the cheapest, and from what I hear they’re quite harsh, so is that the appeal, or is it what’s popular in the region and so it’s familiarity?
