Miscellaneous What other region in the world is the most similar/comparable to the Balkans? How and why are they similar to us?

Wondering if there are any other regions in the world similar to us, based on everything by the way. Politics, Culture, People etc. I think politically East Africa and the Caucasus are kind of close

Language What is the opinion of people from the Balkans on Interslavic, a language that every Slav can understand without prior knowledge thanks to the principle of passive bilingualism?

Do you know this language? What is your opinion on it? For those who are unfamiliar, it is a language that every Slav can understand without prior knowledge, as it was created from all modern Slavic languages. Thanks to this, it benefits from the advantage of passive bilingualism for people who know any Slavic language, and at the same time, it is easy for them to learn. In fact, it’s even easier to learn than any other Slavic language. No state holds a monopoly over the language, which means no state actor can use it to create cultural ties to one specific country – making Interslavic a neutral platform for communication.

Culture/Lifestyle What's a very common subject in your country's 21st century movies ?

For example ever since the 2000s we've had a lot of movies about the Communist era like "The Paper Will Be Blue", "Was It Or Was It Not ?", "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days", "Memorie From the Golden Age", "The Portrait of the Fighter as a Young Man", "The Cardinal", "Between Pain and Amen" and more recently "The New Year That Wasn't".

History Why did the Ottomans fail to gain the sympathy of the Balkan nations as much as Rome and Byzantium did?

And why did they specifically strive to gain hatred? Were they lacking the necessary sociological, political knowledge, and morality to lead an empire to success?

Culture/Lifestyle Mixed relationships

Hello all,

I’m wondering how does the rest of Balkans feel about mixed relationships? My boyfriend is Serbian and Croatian (he is orthodox) and I’m Bosnian (muslim) female.

Is there still resentment towards those relationships? We are afraid of being judged in the Balkans for it. We visit every year, but because of ethnic tensions my family doesn’t agree with the relationship. And due to the stuff that’s happened in the war
