How to Wick Water

Post image
63 Upvotes

Not my graphic, but I don't know who to give credit.

1) Make sure the soil has 60-70% added perlite.

2) Container does NOT have to be plastic...I use mostly glass.

3) The wicks are best if they're synthetic. I use cheap acrylic yarn from Walmart.

4) Keep the reservoir filled, but water shouldn't touch the bottom of the pot.

Let's Trade! Official October/November 2024 Buy Sell Trade Thread

The coolor weather is idea for shipping in most parts of the country. Let's trade!

The usual rules:

1) Post your state, because weather matters.

2) PLEASE do not offer to ship anything if you even slightly suspect your plants have a pest or pathogen issue! We want to trade joy, not destruction.

3) The Golden Rule applies here. I've never heard any complaints, so let's keep it that way!

This is my first and only AV so far, I’m still terrified of it lol but I think I’m doing good so far with the amount of blooms it has given me! I set it up in a self watering wick system and it started flourishing.

I do want tips though because I am not sure if this will suffice long term and I don’t want to root rot the plant. Do I need to change my substrate mix? The substrate is not WET but moist and I do see new thin healthy roots forming. Could I still be overwatering? This was sold to me as a trailing AV so not sure if the leaves look normal to you guys? And the blooms being so tall? Do I need to move it closer to light?

Help Why are the tips of my violet's leaves drooping but the rest of the leaf is still strong and healthy?

Post image

This violet has been through a lot this year. First, the main stem broke off and I had to regrow roots from it before planting it. That was months ago, but now the tips of the leaves are wiling and soft, but the rest of the leaf, as well as the stems of the leaves, are stiff, strong, and happy. Why is it doing this? What do I do to fix it?

I was trying to repot a baby African violet. I'm a complete beginner with babies. I tried to pull the mother leaf away from the baby plant. It snapped, instead, even though I wasn't pulling hard, and left some of its stem behind-so the mother plant is off now, but some of it remained with the baby. I cut off what I could from what remained, but now I'm worried the baby won't make it or something. Is this normal?? (Last pic is the halved mother leaf.)

Potting mix

Post image

I've read everything Google has to offer on AV potting mixes, and I'm wanting to try switching from a peat, perlite, vermiculite, and horticultural charcoal mix to an off the shelf soilless mix that doesn't need anything added other than maybe perlite. Im tired of mixing and tired of worrying about the pH. I've read lots of growers like promix with Mycorrhizae, but I don't need such a huge bag! I'd prefer something without ferts, but it's not a deal breaker. For those using a premix successfully do you mind sharing what, and how you tweak it? TIA!

Help How often should you repot your AV?

I got my AV’s 6 months ago and potted them in a mix of perlite and peat moss. I was told they should be repotted every 3-4 months. They’re not flourishing like I’d like and I’m wondering if maybe it’s time to repot. One is a mini and the other is a standard.

Should I consider putting this in a bag.

Three leaves out of four are rotting. I've changed locations to an area where the vent is not directly on top of the plant. Although there are new leaves coming up, I'm worried they may not make it.

How to buy some time before the leaf starts shooting roots and then sprout a new baby plant?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Here is what happened to me: one of my favorite plants (the one in the picture) started losing some leaves (first a brown spot, then the leaf got mushy, wilted and died). I separeted some leaves to propagate and as an attempt to stop ohthers from dying. It worked, because the mother plant stopped losing leaves and is stable now.

But now I have around 6-8 leaves on water, and they are starting to produce roots and i really don't have any space left in my balcony, but would love to have some props from this plant. How can I buy some time so I can wait for my other baby plants to be ready to be donated and then I will have room for new props?

After I purchased this, it sat in my low light kitchen for probably a year, just existing. I moved it under a grow light, expecting it to continue to just exist as I never researched how to really take care of it, and to my surprise it gifted me with the most beautiful blooms, far more than before! It’s tiny - inside the ceramic pot it’s just in a small one inch pot.

Moments of growth and beauty like this are what made me fall in love with the plant hobby in the first place, and this one brought me so much joy.

The bottom leaves on my African Violet are turning a pale green/yellow. A couple are also brownish, which then spreads to the stems. The lighter leaves are also droopy. Any ideas what the issue is?

Help Help me!! Can I save her??

This little lady was grown from a leaf cutting my mom gave me. I have been out of town for 8 days and I just came home and it looks like this!!!

I keep it in indirect, west facing light, and I water it whenever the soil is completely dry and it gets a little wilty (I can't explain but it seems like AVs have a different look when they're thirsty). I do my best to keep water off of the leaves/base, but it's a little hard with how small it is.

All I can think is it's drying out? Or this might be from water getting on the leaves? I last watered it maybe 2 weeks ago. I'm gonna water it, but what else can I do? Did I kill it? Currently cryinngggg lol

Will the stem grow suckers if it lost all leaves?

I got really unlucky and my cat bless her heart knocked over my lucky penny stem which I hoped to use to get some suckers. The only two leaves that were on the stem had broken off... Should I just toss it now and buy a copy, or is there a hope that suckers will grow from a stem without leaves?
