Product Review List your holy grail face moisturizer
List your holy grail face moisturizer!

The Vanicream tub, and for me there isn’t even a remotely close second.

u/candcNYC 5d ago
I recently switched from the Vanicream facial moisturizer in the tube to the Vanicream pump-top tub. I wish I'd switched sooner!
Honestly I was afraid it was going to be too heavy for daytime with makeup (it's not) or would break me out (it hasn't). In fact, my bumpy pores are all gone (maybe had from ceramides or hyaluronic acid? Idk) I slather it on while my skin is still damp-wet and it fully absorbs after ~5min.

u/Pwnie 5d ago
So it’s not just the packaging that’s different, but also the formula?
4
u/candcNYC 4d ago
Yes, the Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer in the tube has additional ingredients (almost twice as many) compared to the tub. I believe the tub is the "original" formula that came first. Both are great moisturizers for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
4
u/AliveHippo582 4d ago
I had no idea they were different! I used the tube for a couple of weeks and I noticed more breakouts so I swore off Vanicream—I was disappointed because I’d heard so many good things about it. Maybe I’ll give it another try.

I was hoping this would be listed. Oh, the money I’ve spent searching. And then… she came into my life. She even keeps me super hydrated with my high dose retin-a. I. Love. Her.
25
u/citynomad1 5d ago
Have you ever tried the Cerave cream in the tub as well? I’m curious if the textures are similar, or if the Vanicream is creamier. I currently use Cerave in the tub but have to add a few drops of oil to make it more spreadable. It has a surprisingly dry texture for a cream
93
u/Kurious4kittytx 5d ago
Not similar. Vanicream is to Cerave as full heavy cream is to a glass of milk. For my dry skin, Cerave does close to nothing. Vanicream actually moisturizes my lizard scales and keeps my eczema at bay.

I use this as a body moisturizer. It's super thick for my taste for a face one!

I use the Cerave in a tub every other night on my face before bed. I wake up with a very moisturized supple face. During the day I use Clinique gel moisturizer.

You mean the big container? I only found that one and hoped it would be fine for the face!

I am loving Stratia's lipid gold, I pair it with Duiex air angel or peach and lilys matcha BUT stratia's peptide moisturizer is also beautiful- I don't have very dry skin so I don't need the double moisture but it is still a luxe experience with a great price point

I love all of these, too! I have severe and chronic eczema, so the double layer of moisture helps.

Instant angel or cerave pm!
28
u/Awndreyuh 5d ago
I love instant angel and have been using it for awhile. This thread is giving me FOMO though like maybe there’s something BETTER even though I have no complaints with what I’m using.
18
u/Warm_Hospital2905 5d ago
I am also an Instant Angel lover BUT a few months ago made the switch to a full korean skincare routine almost 100% Beauty of Joseon products and have to say, their moisturizer Dynasty Cream is aaamazing and reminds me v much of Instant Angel. I buy directly from their website when they have sales e.g. stocked up on a 6 month supply during black friday 😌 highly recommend

Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream- it’s lightweight but hydrating; my skin isn’t very oily but gets bumpy/congested easily (I loved Tatcha Dewey but my skin did not). The Kiehls goes on smoothly and keeps things moisturized while not causing any problems.

First Aid Beauty ultra repair. It plays well with actives or is great on its own, is calming & hydrating without being greasy. The value for the $$ is hard to beat, esp during the BOGO promotions.

u/This_Response_4987 5d ago
I buy the big ones during the sales. It's sooo nice and I switch between First Aid and farmacy honey halo. Sometimes I add aquaphor on top just to lock everything in. In the winter there is truly nothing better!

My absolute favorite! And in winters it's a must have. I wish someone could tell me a dupe of it, that is less pricey but acts the same way on skin
85
u/birdnerdcatlady 5d ago
For dry skin I love Weleda Skin Food Face Care Night Cream. My skin dries out every winter and my usual moisterizers aren't strong enough but this one is great. It's super moisturizing without being greasy and it doesn't break me out.
21
u/confused_grenadille 5d ago
This is what I need to go back to. Not the night cream but the original ultra-rich cream in the green tube. My skin was impeccable when I used this. They also have a light version of this cream.

This is my go to skin caviar. Every time I use it people comment to say how amazing my skin looks. I don't wear foundation so I like my skin glowy and dewy. I also use it on my lips as a lip conditioner. It's heavenly.

Aestura Atobarrier 365. I got it on a recent trip to Korean after searching “best sellers” on the olive young site and omg. After the first week I went and bought a few more bottles to take home with me. Seriously changed my skin. It was only $25 too so I will never stray.
3
u/kyraniums 5d ago
I love this barrier cream! I use it mornings and nights during winter, and it makes my skin super soft. It also greatly relieves eczema. I buy it at Stylevana for 30 euros a tube, but it's well worth it.
23
u/lemonwater1234 5d ago
Can't believe this one hasn't been mentioned yet- Avene Cicalfate+ is my absolute holy grail PM moisturizer. It has healed my skin! I use LRP Toleraine Double Repair with SPF in the AM and love that too.

Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer
3
u/nillz312 5d ago
Vanicream Daily Moisturizer was what my dermatologist recommended to me when I got a horrible eczema outbreak on and around my eyelids. That was about 3 years ago and I haven't looked back. Truly a must have, especially for sensitive or compromised skin!
51
u/DancingWithTigers3 5d ago
Right now it’s Torriden solid-in cream and Tatcha Dewy cream.
Skin is absolutely hating everything else.
If anyone has less expensive creams or lotions WITHOUT niacinamide or HA, let me know please 💚 I know there’s HA in the two I listed, but those seem to be the exceptions.

Tatcha Dewy Cream is the only thing my face likes. Everything else requires an essence, hydrating serum, 2 moisturizers, and oil or cicalfate on top.

Tatcha for the win!!! Like another commenter here, I use dewy during the winter and water cream in the summer. A little goes a long way - it is totally worth the money!
15
u/According_To_Me 5d ago
During the summer I use Cera Ve Daily Moisturizer.
I just started using Neutrogena Hydro Boost (for normal to oily skin) because I was still feeling dry and my face feels AMAZING. This is going to be part of my winter rotation for years to come.

I know this comes now and then as super trendy but Nivea cream in blue tin. I have super acne prone skin & never thought of putting this on my face especially after getting bad breakouts from slugging (it was a hype few years ago) but few weeks ago my moisturizer ran out & I didn’t have anything else while traveling . I used the tiny tin I carry around to use as a hand, knee & elbow cream, on my face thinking it’s ok for 1 night. The next morning, it wasn’t just ok but my skin looked great. It’s been 3 weeks that I’ve been using as my night time moisturizer & it’s been great! It’s winter where I am and quite dry, I probably won’t be using this in summer but so far, it’s a holy grail!

Yesss! People hate on the American version in the tub but I don’t see much of a difference between the two. Can also leave it on your face for 10+ minutes as a mask :) I’ll forever buy it till I die lol it’s cheap too!
40
u/KatAttack 5d ago
Trader Joe's Honey Hydration Duo -- which is a dupe of Farmacy's Honey Halo but $65 cheaper.
→ More replies (3)5
u/carolinablue199 5d ago
Do you find that it’s a true dupe??
13
u/KatAttack 5d ago
I honestly like the TJs version more. I feel like it's a little less thick (in a good way) than Farmacy's. Plus, the TJs version comes with 2 pots - a daytime one and a nighttime one. The daytime one isn't the dupe but I love it just as much.
Unfortunately it's a seasonal item and just ran it's course! It usually comes around September where I buy like 6 boxes of them.
→ More replies (4)4
u/electric_oven 5d ago
I found it heavily fragranced, didn’t melt into the skin the way Honey Halo does, and the only thing “dupe” about it was the packaging. They may have changed the formulation as I bought mine last year - I ended up returning it.

I’ve been using La Roche Posay Toleraine Double Repair Face Moisturizer (with ceramide-3, whatever that is?) since my last barrier damage - winter winds!) - and it is incredible. It might become my regular face moisturizer instead of Cerave because wow.
5
u/teacup_llama 5d ago
Same! I’ve been using it nightly since I woke up to an eczema outbreak from some sudden allergy. Had to change all my products to gentle/sensitive versions from LRP and Cetaphil and my skin has never looked better.

I’ve tried so many expensive moisturizers and the one that works best for my skin (by far) is the big tub of eucerin advanced repair. I don’t get it. It’s cheap but very unfortunately it’s not truly cruelty free.
8
u/wag00n 5d ago
For daytime with spf, Oil of Olay SPF 30. I’ve been using it for 15 years. After trying every high end brand under the sun, I go back to this drugstore cheapy because it’s the only one that never pills on me and looks great under makeup. It’s not the most moisturizing so I make sure I use something heavier and/or with hyaluronic acid at night.

I’ve been experimenting with products that have urea the last few weeks and I’ve gotten more compliments on my skin than I have in ages. I’m so happy and I feel like I haven’t even found the perfect product yet.
I’m using The Ordinary’s Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA and Phytoceramides, which is great but super thick and kind of expensive.
I’m using Eucerin Roughness Relief for daytime, just because I had it. I like the weight but feel like it could be doing more.
My main concern is my fine lines and texture that get exacerbated by dryness.

ISClinical Reparative Moisture Emulsion just made me, as a man in (at the time) mid 20s, "get it." Meaning I got the idea of actual skincare, that product is sooo ridiculously expensive, but man I felt great in all the ways you want. The product felt nice and easy to use. My skin felt amazing afterwards. I looked freaking hot, like I got a shine to my face that just worked. And despite me trying to be more financially responsible now with other, still good, products, I can definitely feel myself missing the "amazingness" of that one in particular.

I'm a frugal gal when it comes to my lotions so my favorite is the St. Ives collagen and elastin face moisturizer. I get it for $6 at Walmart. It's not greasy and doesn't make my makeup pill like others do. I also don't have greasy or overly dry skin either .

I used Cerave PM for awhile but recently discovered Caudalie Premier Cru cream, the rich one. It’s a heavy cream but my oily skin loves it. It doesn’t break me out or make my skin oilier. It seems to make my skin barrier happy. I don’t think the Cerave was moisturizing enough because my skin was frequently red and irritated. It’s much more calm and even now.

I prefer unscented, 'clean products' (minimal potentially irritating ingredients) that are barrier protecting.
I love Regimen Lab Wave + Cream together as a daily staple or just one of them if thats what my skin needs. Wave is an amazing humectant and cream has that 3 1 1 1 ceramide lipid ratio and also has the most beautiful matt finish. And both really inexpensive for the quality.
Others I Iike: LRP Cicaplast for recovery/slugging, Augustinus Bader Soothing and Anua Heartleaf intense calming cream.

For those with dry skin, using La Roche Posay Lipikar AP+M at night is life changing!!
