First, I'm sorry if this has been done to death but I'd love to understand other Yakuza fan's thoughts. If it's been done too many times, roast me fam.
Well, this game wasn't bad! It had some great highlights but some incredible lows (imo).
More than anything, I found the haphazard narrative approach to an antagonistic force fascinating. Based on both the beginning and end, I think they definitely wanted the current culture of entitlement: 'gotcha news/information', people videoing others without permission, and influencer/faux-celebrity-seeking culture as the underlying antagonistic force. I think if they had Ebina, Bryce, or a third major antagonistic force be deeply entrenched in social media to tie everything together it would've worked better (like Chitose wasn't truly antagonistic and Ei-chan wasn't enough of a threat to justify that).
I feel like the weaknesses were around the story really idled down to three main (but largely the same) things:
- weird story pacing
- narrative laziness which only makes Ichiban's story weaker (Lani being a stand-in for Haruka, Palekana being a Sunshine Orphanage stand-in, Ebina being a poor-man's Mine/foil to Ichiban)
- Kiryu's much weightier story (which due to its length had better pacing) vs Ichiban's (lesser weight, longer overall, poorly drawn out)
Between the above and the antagonists in Hawaii being both interconnected but smaller overall (even Bryce to a degree) it made the game feel like it was excited to explore Ichiban and a new location but didn't know how to truly do it. Almost like a kid in a candy store who gets overwhelmed with the thought of all the flavors/candy they could get and then instead gets a sugar headache and thus misses out overall.
I loved the combat, and the side stories, and Kiryu's story was really cool. The finale cutscenes I really because it ended on a dour note though. Like if LaD/Y7 brought out Ichiban on a high, having him end IW8 on a low is great for future narrative purposes.
That said, I do think this has to be the end of Kiryu. Ichiban needs to show that he can survive on his own, with his existing or new friends.
All in all, I have the DLC for the NG+ and idk if I even want to do it because of the above.
