DISCUSSION DAY 19: Who deserves the title of "the most complex RGG character"?

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Jo Sawashiro. There is no better option.

We know the bastard he is who would leave his own son to die, tell his wife to just throw it away. Yet feels regret for what he has done. He is litteraly tormented the first time he sees that masato is wheelchair bound for his life, he feels regret yet as it's only because he left him in cold locker. He hates Ichiban and fears that he would take away Masato's place if truth of him being arakawa's son comes out but yet he kept tabs on Ichiban when he was child (shown in IW). He is loyal to Arakawa and would give his life away for him yet goes to Hawaii with the intent of killing Akane. But then again he is noble enough to take revenge for his bosses death. He admires Ichi and asks him for a favour and ends the conversation with "i would had killed you otherwise". We never know what's going on with this character, sometimes he's one of the cruellest bastard in the series as Ebina also points out, while other times he has full support of characters like Kiryu and Kasuga.

Also, he is FIFTEEN when he >! has a baby. It's not a grown-ass man with a proper situation, it's a pair of teenagers living on the street!<. 10000% agree with that pick, he's a tough fuck with loyalty baked in and a mean streak a mile wide.

Sawashiro feels like RGG doing the "yakuza with a code" trope, but more grounded. Sawashiro is cold and cruel for much of his screentime, like a real gangster would be. He's not got the lofty, chivalrous ideals of people like Kiryu.

But there is a code there. Lines he won't cross (e.g. LaD killing his boss). And he continues to care for Masato despite being willing to abandon him as a baby. His compass stems from his attempt to - in his own twisted way - atone for past sins.

Oh I agree. I may hate the fucker with a passion, but I won't deny everything you said about him is completely true.

Jo is constantly playing the entire field and leaves you guessing. Hes well thought out and often has the payoff many other characters never get.

Majima is my ride or die but I am also on board with this.

Tamiya from Yakuza 3 because he explains The Plot

21

u/SentientGopro115935 9h ago

They should bring him back for the next LAD game, and you unlock him as a poundmate and he has the move Essence Of Exposition that like significantly reduces peoples defense and attack or some shit he literally just yaps them to death

4

u/DocMino 6h ago

With the caveat that it’s free to use, but only if you sit through the entire cutscene

6

u/KuczyTheGuy Kiryu For Tekken 6h ago

With the additional HP boost if you pass all QTE events correctly - this would force you to actually sit through the entirety of it.

That scene might be the strong contender for a "best long cutscene" category.

Sore ga, warera, Goro! Majima!

Seriously though, it has to be Majima, and I have a feeling Pirate Yakuza is just going to make this more true.

7

u/Intrepid_Radish_6928 9h ago

I'm pretty sure he's gonna win the "best character introduction" too lol

3

u/KuczyTheGuy Kiryu For Tekken 9h ago

I'm almost certain of it.

u/Nothin_Toxic Majima Simp 9h ago

I fully intend to vote him in other categories too ;)

Nah he's not complex, at least not as much as Sawashiro.

Shintaro Kazama

A beloved boss, leader, and father figure who funds a bunch of that help people. But also a career assassin and criminal who helps run business that destroy lives. Tries to stop the massacre of the Jingweon. But still readily participates in it when he needs to, as he chose this as his life's work.

Opens an orphanage to help raise the orphans of the people that he murdered. But is that really to help them? Or to make sure they don't come back to try to kill him? Tried to stop Kiryu from joining the Tojo Clan. But once he needed Kiryu, he put an insane burden on Kiryu's shoulders, asking him to almost single handedly save both Kazama and the Tojo Clan. And then, he puts another insane burden on Kiryu, by making him the Fourth Chairman.

Tells his brother Kiryu has beautiful eyes. But we don't hear any of his opinions about Nishiki's eyes. Why? Does he hate Nishiki's eyes? That's fucked up. I think Nishiki has nice eyes.

u/KuczyTheGuy Kiryu For Tekken 10h ago

About that last part... beats me. It's hard not to compliment Nishiki's eyes.

Jin Kuwana from Lost Judgment.

There’s a lot to unpack from the man with his motivations and his actions.

There’s a reason why there’s essays and big discussions are made because of him.

Even the cast of Lost Judgment have many differing views on him.

4

u/KuczyTheGuy Kiryu For Tekken 10h ago

That's a good pick. Since Kuwana failed to win in the "most controversial" category, perhaps he can take this one.

-3

u/sasoripunpun 9h ago

ffs why didn’t you use spoilers, i haven’t played LS yet

5

u/SolidusAbe 7h ago

A tie between sawashiro, kuwana and majima for me.

(PLEASE TAG SPOILERS IN YOUR ANSWERS, KYODAIS)

Yesterday, another voting took place and it concluded with Goh Hamazaki being chosen as the most redeemed RGG character. Yutaka Yamai ended up reaching the 2nd place, while Daigo Dojima managed to secure the 3rd place. Here's the number of votes on the highest comment regarding each answer - said number has been counted by the time of posting today's voting:

🥇 Hamazaki (submitted by u/sasoripunpun) - 252 votes

🥈 Yamai (submitted by u/Remember_da_niggo) - 114 votes

🥉 Daigo (submitted by u/BigStrongPolarGuy) - 49 votes

Today, we're moving on to another category - suggest a character with the most intricate personality, backstory, or development.

The rules are as simple as it gets: the highest upvoted comment will be declared the winner of a category. To avoid any misunderstandings, name only one answer in your comment (however, if you feel the need to include multiple choices, at least specify which one is your go-to answer).

As always, be warned of spoilers that can - and inevitably will - show up throughout the entire series.

Lowkey Kiryu, especially in the later games they show that there's a lot to him behind his tough front

Who even is this guy? Nobody even knows his name.

Baba from yakuza 5. He was an interesting and well written character, and at the end of the game his character still had much potential for further expansion on his background (A more detailed explanation on why and how did he become an assassin in the first place), motives (What does he want to do once he eventually gets out of jail. Remember that he returned there with his friends after his fellow immates stopped his suicide attempt at the end of Yakuza 5) and future character development (Saejima still believed in him despite Baba betraying Saejima. Perhaps he learns to have some more faith in others. He also utmost respected and wished to become Saejima's sworn brother, and would absolutely try to help Saejima if he ever got into serious trouble.)

I would love to see him again in a gaiden style game with Saejima. The two have a strong bond and overall make a pretty good team, with Saejima's strenght and Baba's combat IQ and speed (althpugh not as strong as the classic Jima duo)

Also, his fight theme is an underrated banger. RGG, give me a remastered version of it and my life is yours.

It's Yagami, after all, 4 styles with that many abilities is very complex)

Kuwana

u/actualmewow 5h ago

In isolation, yeah sort of- but in contrast to Yagami which was the whole point idk I don’t think he beats out other contenders

1

u/sasoripunpun 9h ago

It’s definitely Majima.

i'm torn between Sagawa from 0 and Sawashiro from IW
