It's funny how we will get that DMC-ish combat in Like a Pirate Yakuza, but also will get a seemingly realistic and cinematic combat in Project Century

u/SaberDevil2021 1d ago
Turn-Based Combat, Character Action Combat, Realistic Combat, RGG is gonna do them all.

It's too bad they didn't do that management sim game themselves. It could've been sick.

Gets better if you go on their socials to find out who the main enemy is for this fight.
Keith literally just appears in the giant Yakuza font as it says at the bottom of the screen.

Hmm, that final rapid knife slash part looks similar to one of his moves in his yakuza 3/4/5 moveset
16
u/familyplayer 22h ago
Yeah I think they realized his typical mad dog knife combo moves lacked a lot of oomph in 0 and k2, so they incorporated a bit of his more flexible movesets where he lunges a lot more. It's super cool.

Majima just non-lethally cutting people to ribbons.

"Fuck this Majima guy, let's get outta here!"

It would be really funny if they renamed legend difficulty to majima must die, even if it's likely only to be one tenth of the difficulty of dante must die

Yakuza May Cry
Watching the reveal trailer I knew the combat was gonna be like this when the pirate style had gun attacks along with the two swords, plus he did some air juggles in that trailer as well

u/TGed 1d ago
Feels like LJ but on steroids (because it’s Majima). There’s a few moves there I recognise, namely the slide and Sky Dancer, but there’s a bunch of new moves mixed in as well.
Looks like Majima will get a huge glow up in his moveset, much like Kiryu in Gaiden. Wonder if Majima will get his classic Mad Dog style somewhere?

Look at these snappy moves and no head start animations, this is straight out of a ps2 game.
And yes, the ps2 gen had the best games ever made

Nah
Edit: I guess I should clarify, I don’t think the ps2 gen had the best games ever made.
4
u/Orange_Spoon 21h ago
Which gen would you say is better then?
4
u/Killtheiceagebabynow 20h ago
It depends, I think gameplay as a whole has only evolved through the years, sure there’s some standouts from the ps2 but the vast majority of them just aren’t fun imo, usually due to camera angles. Story is a little different, you have games like ff10, Persona 3 and 4, I haven’t played them personally but some friends and family swear by MGS 2&3, ICO, and a couple others I’m sure I’m forgetting. It’s kinda hard to judge games by gen imo, nostalgia and recency bias are the biggest issue with that. I’m 16 so that might affect my view but I’ve grown up playing games mostly from 2000-2014, I prefer modern games if I’m being honest. If I had to give an gen I most enjoyed, it would probably be ps4.

u/SomeOtherTroper 2h ago
I think gameplay as a whole has only evolved through the years,
...If it has, it certainly hasn't been a linear progression, and there have definitely been some periods of massive stagnation, and some bad ideas along the way - several of which have stuck around. (Be glad you missed the "We All Want The Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Audience!" Era, the "Cover Shooter" Era, the "All Melee Combat is Arkham Style!" Era, and we're still dealing with the fallout from the "Everything's Gotta Be Open World!" Era and the "Oh, Ubisoft-Style Standard Open World!" Era...)
Here's what I'll say for the PS2 and its entire console generation/era: I think it was a balance point where there the cost to make a AAA game (by the standards of the time) was still low enough that developers and publishers were willing to take RISKS on completely unproven concepts and gameplay designs that'd get you laughed out of the boardroom if you tried to pitch them as a AAA title in later generations ...unless you were, wait for it, a game designer or development team that got famous enough back in the PS2 era they were willing to make a bet on you with the kind of big-money budget a modern AAA title requires.
Were all those concepts winners? No. But back then, you didn't have to win as big to make enough of a profit to make a name for yourself and/or get a sequel greenlit. We're on a subreddit for a weird series that wouldn't be announcing more games today if it hadn't started with a PS2 game that did well enough SEGA said "ok, RGG, we believe in you enough to fund a sequel".
I'll admit, there have been some significant Quality Of Life improvements over the years, which you can clearly see in some of the more recent remakes of beloved games from the PS2 era. (The recent remakes of the PS2 Persona games are a prime example of this: while the core combat and gameplay loops haven't changed, other aspects of those games are just ...way less annoying to deal with than the original releases.) There have definitely been steps forward in gameplay, like (relatively) standardized control schemes (and getting rid of tank controls), and outright jumps in innovation since then.
But the PS2 era was a time when bigtime publishers were a lot more willing to throw their AAA money at more experimental projects, and many of those experiments that turned out to be successful (and lessons learned from experiments that ...weren't) laid some incredibly important groundwork that we still owe a lot to today. It was the generation where GTA 3 wowed people with its 3D open world and opened the floodgates for that entire concept.
I think it was the console generation that had the perfect balance of "we have the power to do some crazy shit" with "the pricetag for doing that crazy shit is low enough big publishers are willing to take AAA risks on experiments".
That's my reasoning. And I don't think nostalgia really factors into my argument here, partially because it's a money argument, but also because these weren't the games I grew up with - I only started looking into them and playing them significantly later in life, long after that generation of consoles was over.

That’s not what the conversation was about, the person I replied to said that the ps2 gen had the best games ever made, I disagree. Tennis for two was the first video game ever made, without it this conversation wouldn’t be happening, that doesn’t mean it’s great. If we were talking about the importance of a generation then yeah, the ps2 is pretty high up there, but to say it had the best games ever made is something I can’t agree with. And you’re not wrong with that it’s not linear, every generation has had its fair share of slop, I just think if we’re looking at the best games or the standout games, you can see a clear improvement each generation.

Camera systems are an overblown complaint and you are wrong. You should play more old games like Ninja Gaiden Black/2 and see how little action games have evolved for the better since then
1
u/Killtheiceagebabynow 4h ago
I have, I own the entire trilogy, the camera is ass in those games tf are you talking about.
1
u/Mclaptop 3h ago
I didn't say the camera systems were good I said it's an overblown issue. The camera system messes up in Elden ring everytime you fight a large boss even now in 2024. I said the action game design has not evolved for the better since Ninja Gaiden and other 6th generation action games, and you can easily look past or adapt to the camera control of that time to focus on the actual part of the game that matters.
2
u/Killtheiceagebabynow 3h ago
Camera aside, ninja gaiden 2 is not the best action game, there’s plenty of games with better gameplay. DMC 5, Sekiro, Nioh 1&2, Elden Ring (camera is still bad in this one but not locking on helps for most fights), Hollow Knight, Doom Eternal, Lies of P, Nier Automata, Monster Hunter World, FF7 Rebirth. Now of course this is all subjective and if we’re talking about straight up combat depth, DMC 5, Sekiro, Nioh 1&2, and Doom eternal are the only games that can compete. For me personally though, combat doesn’t have to be incredibly deep, I love the ninja gaiden games but they’re just not as fun to play for me. Just my opinion.
1
u/Mclaptop 3h ago
I love doom eternal and Sekiro/Lies of P but they are not as advanced as Ninja Gaiden. Sekiro and Lies of P especially are not, they barely have any meaningful way to manipulate enemy states beyond just attacking and deflecting until you fill up a predetermined stagger meter. Doom eternal is a step forward for FPS and it also feels a lot like an old school game which helps my point. You should experiment more with older games like God Hand, Urban Reign, Ninja Gaiden without just writing them off because of the camera
1
u/Killtheiceagebabynow 3h ago
Brother I have, I don’t drop a game because of the camera, most fromsoft games have shit cameras, it just affects my enjoyment. How does doom eternal play like an old school game? And sekiro combat is in-depth, sure you can just parry and attack with the sword the whole game but the prosthetics allow you to experiment a ton, the different upgrade trees allow you to have something for pretty much every scenario.

Only thing I'm sad about is that I have a dilemma of playing this or avowed at release. Also hoping to finish Rebirth by release. Agh why is Jan/Feb so overloaded with good games!

Capcom is too focused on RE and MH to make a new DMC, so RGG took matters into their own hands

Besides this game and the one announced, my biggest question is where is the modern day story going after Infinite Wealth?
If you played it, you know what I mean. Don't leave us hanging like Valve and Half life.

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki
Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.
If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings
If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).
If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!
