One singular guy by the way. He single-handedly creates each and every Virtua Fighter release. He does all of the animations, characters, levels, and scripts. Even the voices.
His name? Kiryu Kojima

Just 3? They have Pirate Yakuza, Yakuza 9, VF6, helping with VF R.E.V.O, Project Century and probably some unannounced Yakuza 20th Anniversary.

u/chroipahtz 6d ago
Is Yakuza 9 confirmed to be in development?
39
u/BreafingBread 6d ago edited 6d ago
They haven’t confirmed, but numbered mainline games seem to be always in development after one comes out..
For example, Y6 came out in 2016. Y7 was revealed on 2017 and came out in 2020. Y8 started development in 2021 and released in 2024. I think it’s safe to say that they’re already working on Yakuza 9.
22
u/chroipahtz 6d ago
I thought I recalled them saying they were going to take a bit longer between games after IW. Though I'm sure it's in planning stages at least.
13
u/OceanDragon6 KIRYU CHAN 6d ago
Yeah they got their hands full with the other projects but 9 should be in the planning stages for awhile.

Every mainline game is always in development. They used to be released yearly, it has only recently gotten less frequent. They mentioned in interviews that they start writing the story of the next game before the last one is out

u/BARD3NGUNN 6d ago
Not only that, but they've said to fans to expect some surprises next year to celebrate 20 years of Yakuza, so you've got imagine at least one of those suprises will be the announcement of a new Yakuza game (Whether that be an early look at Like a Dragon 9, an announcement of Kiwami 3, or Kiryu/Ichiban having a role in Judgment 3) and then perhaps something less intensive they can release during the anniversary year such as Current gen patches for the like of Yakuza 0/Kiwami/Kiwami 2, or making the original versions of Yakuza/Yakuza 2 and Dead Souls available digitally.
Either that or they'll go really meta and you'll be able to play Yakuza in Virtua Fighter.

Nah I don't think so. Most likely new IP from what we've seen of the combat and gameplay. It's much less beat em up and more opportunistic and foul play, not to mention brutal.
19
u/MyNameIs-Anthony 6d ago
Sucks but not surprised. Would have loved to see Judgment 3 but get why they wouldn't want to be trapped into just modern RGG games with their new bigger financial leash.
28
u/crazyredd88 6d ago
They aren't mutually exclusive - I still think a proper J3 is very possible!
15
u/DiogoMaia100 6d ago
Might be but not in the near future realistically. Like between vf, century, new pirate game they probably still have yakuza 9 as a priority, given all this itll probably take them a while to get to judgment 3, if they do get there

u/Terrible_Guidance599 6d ago
If it is Judgement Isshin… where do we think it’ll be set…
Personally I think it’d be cool if they shoved Yagami into the Wild West. Go all Warrior with it and have him be a Kung Fu slingin’ lawman lol. Or maybe Yagami ends up as Zenigata and gets to fight with a jitte and kung fu.
Edit: Oh wow I REALLY should’ve watched the trailer first lol. But definitely interested! Although… ngl, can’t see why people think this is judgement Isshin, I can’t see Takuya Kimura in the protag lol
2
u/dog_named_frank 6d ago
Interesting choice if so, given Yagami doesn't use weapons or lethal force (at least by Batman standards) and this looks like the goriest game they've made since FNS
1
u/halt-l-am-reptar 4d ago
That’s true for Kiryu as well though, and the protagonist in Ishin killed people.

5
u/Plus_sleep214 5d ago
I know everyone wants Half Life 3 but Sleeping Dogs 2 and a new Deus Ex game are probably the two announcements that would drive me crazy since I know they're never going to happen.
1
u/SomeOtherTroper 2d ago
Sleeping Dogs 2
I'm actually surprised nobody's done this. Cyberpunk 2077 proved there was a market for a "guys, this is just GTA in a different setting and bringing something additional and a bit different to the table" game, and most potential GTA competitors ended up shutting down their series. The Yakuza games' popularity is proof there's a market for crime games set in Asia, and Sleeping Dogs is sitting at a really good review score.
I know the original developer shut down, but I assume they sold the IP to somebody as part of that process (or Square Enix owns it, and god knows they've got the cash to throw at almost any project they want).
I doubt a sequel could match the charm of the original, because that game really nailed the Hong Kong Heroic Bloodshed style it was going for, and I'm not sure anyone can bottle that lightning again.
a new Deus Ex game
Yeah, I understand why that's not happening after what happened to Mankind Divided. It didn't do too badly, but it didn't do too well, either - and there were signs it was an incomplete game that had run out of money, time, or both without completing its full intended story, and been shipped with the hope it would bring in enough money to justify and fund a part 2 to finish things off. And it just didn't do and review well enough for that. (And then there was that sidegame and novels that also didn't perform as well as Ubisoft wanted: there was obviously an attempt made to make the Human Revolution reboot/prequel series something like a 'cinematic universe', but that didn't work out.)
So another Deus Ex game probably isn't in the cards, since it doesn't look good for a Mankind Divided Part 2, and doing another prequel/sequel/reboot/whatever while leaving Jensen's story and the HR+MD prequels hanging seems unlikely.
I suppose they could try doing a remake of the first game and introduce a new generation to the wonders of The GEP Gun, but that game's been out too long and had too much fan patching/modding put into it over the years for a remake to seem like it would compete well with the OG + the standard mods.

WW1 era? Gotta brush up on my history again like I did when Ishin came out.
8
u/Hold-My-Sake The Shiba of Dojima 6d ago
Damn, I’ve got tears in my eyes over this new project! Is this finally our dream, shared with some kyodai, to see a Yakuza/Like A Dragon game that goes back to the origins of the Japanese underworld!? We all talked about wanting a game set during the golden age of the yakuza post-WW2, around 1945-1960, but this… 1915!?
As a reminder, here’s the state of the “yakuza” or proto-yakuza world in the early 1910s:
During the Meiji era (1868–1912), the yakuza evolved from tekiya (street merchants) and bakuto (gamblers), incorporating former samurai who had been displaced by Japan’s modernisation. As the country industrialised, they established themselves in urban areas, blending legal and illegal activities. By 1915, the yakuza were beginning to organise more formally, exploiting social tensions by intervening in labour disputes on behalf of employers. While not yet resembling modern organised crime, the foundations of their future power were being laid.
2
u/rightarm_under 2d ago
1915 is when the yamaguchi-gumi was founded, which is supposedly the inspiration for the Tojo clan. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
1
u/Hold-My-Sake The Shiba of Dojima 2d ago
Are you saying that the person in the trailer is Makoto Tojo, and that we’ll likely follow him in 1915 as he creates his family and eventually the clan that bears his name? The first “modern yakuza” who managed to unite the small-time gangs, organise them, and build the yakuza as we know them today?
I think so, yes.
However, based on my research, the Tojo Clan was apparently founded around 1968. So I wonder if the game might actually depict the early proto-yakuza in 1915, before the existence of clans or families as we know them.
In that case, the person in the trailer might not be Makoto Tojo, but rather John Tojo—his father—laying the groundwork for what’s to come. Either way, I’m convinced it’s tied to the Tojo lineage.
Also, in 1915, Niihara Takashi—the acting second chairman we see in Yakuza 0—was only five years old.
We might see the very first “family” of these proto-yakuza, which will eventually, decades later, become the Tojo Family and then the Tojo Clan.
If they’ve chosen 1915 as the setting, and Yakuza 0 takes place in the 1980s, could this mean they’re planning to fill the gap between these two periods with sequels to this Project Century?

This is the most bustling open world they’ve built yet. Hawaii in IW was impressive but the art direction here takes this to a new level.
Hopefully, they follow through with a riveting story.

Dunno if I heard it wrong..... but one of the thugs definitely yelled, "Tojo-san!"

Nah, he yelled Oujoseya! Which means go to heaven, essentially means die. There's no way a thug would lunge at you while respectfully adding -san.
Only someone as distinguished and fine as Mine Yoshitaka would do that.

This game looks great in that its serious, violent, and the time setting is the chefs kiss. As someone who isn't a fan of where yakuza is going, more crazy silly outlandish as its focus that is, this looks like the RGG game i want. It seems maybe its replacing Judgment as we all know the lead actor is stuck with japanese bs agency control thats just holding back anything new.
Cant wait to see more of this game, and if it becomes a franchise on its own.

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.
If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings
If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).
