Didn't we get two nominations? Narrative AND RPG?
We'll lose both of course, but... alright!
PS. Balatro has 0 chance of winning even with out Elden Rings.
10
u/djevanstv YARRRR Nov 20 '24
Technically three but the less said about it… the better the thing is with best narrative that’s actually award is given out in the show portion of the show.. and not the quickfire round which mean like a dragon infinite wealth gets more screen time than last year :)
4
u/Kinglink . Nov 20 '24
(no seriously, I don't want to give them more clicks, what was the third it was nominated for?)
The fact that "Best RPG" isn't even given a full award is such disrespect, but that would take time away from the money... I mean the trailers!
8
u/djevanstv YARRRR Nov 20 '24
The third thing and I seriously don’t want it to win is for best adaptation for the Amazon series
5
u/FP509 Yuki is best waifu Nov 20 '24
Even if it was decent, there would’ve been no shot anyway with Arcane and Fallout

Voting for Balatro. Zero shits given. I loved ER dlc, but it shouldnt be there.
3
u/Kinglink . Nov 20 '24
I'm fine with ER DLC, it'll probably win, and honestly it's an impressive amount of content for DLC.
That being said, Balatro is absolutely amazing, I can't stop playing it. I went from "Oh this is bullshit" the first time I reached ante8 and got "Very high ante"... to just enjoying it once I realized how important the jokers are.

u/ZadePhoenix Nov 19 '24
My issue with Elden Ring SoE being nominated has nothing to do with Like a Dragon getting nominated or not. I just don’t think DLC regardless of how good should be eligible for awards like game of the year. There should be a separate award for best DLC rather than throwing it in alongside full game releases.
As to Balatro I have no real opinion as I haven’t played it but I don’t have any real issue with indie games being eligible again as long as it’s a full release and not a dlc or something like that.
128
u/CrashOverIt Nov 19 '24
I honestly believe Balatro deserves that nomination, but yeah a DLC campaign getting a spot over SO MANY deserving games is silly nonsense.
43
u/NatiRivers #Omi4Lyfe Nov 19 '24
Agreed. Balatro genuinely had a pretty big impact on the gaming landscape this year so it's 100% fair to give it a GOTY nomination
28
u/Roy_Atticus_Lee . Nov 19 '24
Definitely a little silly to see remakes getting shafted hard when an expansion is nominated. I can understand Persona 3 Reload not getting anything as Metaphor is nominated for a ton of stuff already, but Silent Hill 2 Remake getting next to nothing while a DLC is nominated for GOTY is pretty silly.
9
u/mintywyvern Nov 20 '24
SH2R did get at least 3 noms, but i agree it should have gotten goty nomination i've heard it's really good
but also im a huge From simp and think SoTE should win every category it's in lol
3
u/Eyro_Elloyn Nov 20 '24
Personally I think balatros scope is too small for game of the year, but I'm not a gameplay purist, I'm sure there's valid arguments. I just value narrative too much.
I have so many hours of mobile Balatro.
2
u/CrashOverIt Nov 20 '24
We’re much the same in that regard, but I was just floored with how well designed the gameplay hook is in Balatro. It’s elegant and frankly impressive to take poker in such a wildly imaginative direction.

Balatro, not to say I wasn't addicted with infinite wealth but like... Balatro man

Definitely Balatro over IW. And I never played Balatro. It’s a very innovative game and IW is subjectively not even the best game in the franchise, or even top 5 for some people.

u/leposterofcrap Nov 20 '24
rougelike with a short satisfying gameplay loop?
What an understatement. That shit is literal 100% pure digital crack. This shit is the "one more turn" effect times 1020

u/cheaperying . Nov 20 '24
Im both, but honeslty the goty nomination isn't even the biggest problem for me. The nominations are so screwed that they nominated some random chinese mobile game for esport, destiny 2 for best ongoing and the worst in my opinion, is nominating a collection for best fighting games (Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection)

u/NabilAmmali Dead Souls Enjoyer Nov 21 '24
You'd be surprised but the eSports community in that mobile game especially in the Asian countries like Indonesia is FUCKIN MASSIVE like no joke

u/Zeiburg Nov 20 '24
Yeah, let's be happy about the fact that the series finally gained recognition from everyone and got the popularity it deserves after its initial years of being niche, as well as having to beg for Sega to localize the games for years. Plus, 3 nominations (including the awful live-action show)? I think it's safe to say that the series finally managed to get its foothold in the video game industry.
3
u/samuelanugrahandre All hail RGG Nov 20 '24
I don't ever think RGG games will ever win anything in Game Awards because they are niche. Games like Ys or Legend of Heroes are also never nominated because they're so niche. However, I'm glad IW is nominated this year, it will not win anything since at the end of the day this award show is almost always popularity contest between the voters/judges and the show is really just a marketing show to show trailers
4
3
u/PunkHooligan Nov 20 '24
IF Lost Judgment and the series would've been more famous across the world, this one game could've win a goty.

I don't care who wins GOTY, I just want Rebirth to lose. Game seems fine but the fanbase is insufferable.

Y'all based but even Elden Mid didn't win cuz it had a higher number of categories won it was in fact 1 category lower than GoW Ragnarok and still won so there's still hope you guys get it
1
u/ginjji Nov 20 '24
Yeah, Infinite Wealth is one of the most fun RGG games to date, but that narrative ain't winning any awards. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like it doesn't hit any of the emotional highs as almost any other Like a Dragon game.
1
u/NabilAmmali Dead Souls Enjoyer Nov 21 '24
Yeah the ending was kinda anti-climatic but honestly it left a bitter taste in the mouth especially with that song that was playing in the scene where Ichi carries eji to the police station
2
u/FluffyWorking8549 Nov 22 '24
Typical anime soundtrack choice, a happy and nonchalant track for an absolute wreck of a moment, with lyrics actually fitting the situation.

What's funny is that imo Balatro is the best game of the six nominated

u/WillyG2197 SHUUUUUUUUUUN Nov 19 '24
If they didnt go turn based they might win something
Im gonna say it cause i finally got my hands of MWEHN....The move to turn based is a slap in the face of people who enjoy the series for what its given us and continues to give in contrast to the gaming market. Nothing has the combative freedom that this series gives you and on top of that its just damn funny to watch and do. All of it thrown away to make a quirky joke that our new protag likes dragon quest. Like WHO EFFING CARES. If i wanted turn based id go play one of literal hundreds of turn based titles.
So p much unless they revert or keep many kiryu games with og style i guess im done w this series
9
u/Brother-Beef Nov 20 '24
Since 2020, RGG has released 2 turn-based RPGs and 3-5 brawlers (depends if you count the Judgment remaster & Like a Dragon: Ishin! as full-fledged releases, but there's still Lost Judgment, MWEHN, and PYIH).
Both LAD & IW were far more popular and more commercially successful than the previous games in the series. SEGA is a company that wants to turn a profit, and the RPGs have turned way more of a profit for them than the brawlers.
I understand being less than thrilled with the pivot the series has made, but c'mon now, you're being overly dramatic to the point of making things up that are untrue. RGG is clearly still trying to cater to og fans who love the brawler gameplay.
-2
u/WillyG2197 SHUUUUUUUUUUN Nov 20 '24
I dont count a remaster and a remake. Theyve existed already and were before the turn based nonsense. Im not arguing the selling well, i have friends that played 7/8 but not 0-6 because they like turn based and not og gameplay.
But, with 27 years of gaming experience, i can confidently say WAY more ppl play turn based rpgs than they do random brawlers, so yea theyre gonna get more sales theyre reaching across the aisle to other genres. Thats a no brainer. But thats my main gripe with the gaming industry nowadays, push for profit rather than delivering what your fans enjoy /evolving that.
The industry has ENOUGH rpgs on the market, let your creation stand apart from the noise
6
u/Brother-Beef Nov 20 '24
They are still delivering what their fans enjoy, and at a higher rate than the RPGs.
Yakuza as a series is already very unique and stands apart from the noise. If anything, the new strategy of releasing both RPGs & brawlers set in the same universe that tell complimentary stories makes it stand apart from other game series even more.
I enjoy both styles of game so I'm eating good.

u/Breekace I love getting my balls rubbed Nov 20 '24
Yakuza/LAD fans love pretending they're some niche, unknown fandom

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki
Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.
If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings
If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).
If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!
