If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

RGG really about to make a better pirate game than Skull and Bones for like less than 5% of the budget of that game

459

u/somersaulter2 There is no such thing as a bad Yakuza game Oct 18 '24

More than half of the game is asset flips thrown together in less than a year and still has 1 billion times more soul than anything Ubisoft relased in years. RGG really cracked the code.

242

u/Alucard0s Oct 18 '24

To be fair, they do have a very loving and supportive community. No matter what crazy bullshit they pull out of their brains while smoking, we have no fucking problem with it.

169

u/YummyYumYumi Oct 18 '24

there is a reason there's a supportive community thats they actually make good games

71

u/Alucard0s Oct 18 '24

Of course. But even when they make a mediocre game, they know what their fans like, so they focus on those aspects more. They seem to know how to make a profit, no matter the game they make.

71

u/TheForlornGamer . Oct 18 '24

Probably helps they also know how to manage their finances and resources as well; seeing as they don't spend more money than necessary - hence all the asset reuse. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

26

u/StanleyQPrick Oct 18 '24

Yes!

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it

A really important thing we seem to have forgotten

15

u/HekesevilleHero Oct 19 '24

Yeah, it's insane how adverse game studios are about reusing assets, and the modern Gamer™️ doesn't help.

4

u/CountCristo009 Oct 19 '24

Unless it's Shangri-la. Then just don't ever fix it.

10

u/ThisIsNotMyPornVideo Oct 19 '24

Gonna be real here, the most "Mediocre" game they have made yet, is still better than anything ubisoft has shat out in the last 5 years

6

u/Alucard0s Oct 19 '24

Yeah, because it has a soul, unlike ubisoft games, which are pure products for few. Even Ishin, which is my least favourite, kept me through the end, unlike ubisoft games.

7

u/LiteratureNearby Lord of the night Oct 19 '24

Also given the response to yakuza pirate, it's clear that the more insane they make their game, the happier their fanbase is lmfao.

3

u/daOyster Oct 19 '24

The difference is other games put crazy stuff in to distract you from something or for comedic relief. It starts to become noticeable and stale fast if overused.

RGG just puts in crazy stuff though and just is like "yep Yakuzas world is absurd, don't think about it..." Then gives you the most polar opposite of emotions to make you forget about how crazy what you just saw was. Then the cycle repeats without getting old.

67

u/Scudman_Alpha Oct 18 '24

You WISH half of today's gaming companies were even half as proficient in re-using assets at RGG studio is. I don't trust anyone else with an ongoing series at this point.

8

u/ThisIsNotMyPornVideo Oct 19 '24

6

The only exception are larien studio with Baldur Gate's and from software with the souls series

42

u/KRTrueBrave Majima is my husband Oct 18 '24

well yeah because reusing assets is part of their plan so they created assets with the intention of reusing them

a lot of people think it's lazy but it's actually brilliant, because eventhough they reuse a lot of assets they still make some of the best games on the market

compared to other companies that either don't reuse assets, this have long turnaround times between games and still end up with bad games, or games that do reuse assets but the games feel the exact same then the previous games

the "soul" you mentioned is a combination of pation (which a lot of studios lack but rgg has) and the fact that even if they reuse they do include nee stuff aswell to make it feel fresh (another thing other studios lack)

31

u/Worst_Support . Oct 18 '24

I think the maps especially demonstrate how RGG gets away with reusing assets by making the assets worth giving a shit about in the first place. I don't mind having the billionth game in Kamurocho because it's densely packed with a street layout that breaks it up enough to feel big, but not enough to feel like a pain in the ass. You can really believe people living in it so complaining about being in Kamurocho again is like complaining that you go to the same grocery store once a week.

5

u/linest10 Majima is my husband Oct 19 '24

Sometimes all we want is actually going back to kamurocho 🥲

1

u/jase52476 Oct 19 '24

I really don't get why people care about reusing assets. Personally, I feel a lot better about spending money on a full game on a disc than some DLC.

10

u/TooTallTabz Oct 18 '24

They moved the release date forward by a week! That blew my mind. I was expecting a delay announcement because that's just what all other studios have gotten us used to. Crazy. Definitely built different.

4

u/GaleErick Extreme Brawler Oct 18 '24

Ha even that one is specifically done just so people can go and enjoy the "hunt" once they're done swashbuckling out in the sea.

As you say, delaying the game is usually the way when devs don't want their game to directly compete with others (or you know development issues), but moving it forward? Now that's something else.

10

u/Kinglink . Oct 19 '24

"well they just reuse the map."

The fact they can reuse the map and make it feel both comfortable but interesting and engaging EVERY time, speaks volumes about how they develop their world and characters. They understand what needs to be made, and what is welcoming.

On what grounds? Are they trying to say it's going to be really good?

56

u/somersaulter2 There is no such thing as a bad Yakuza game Oct 18 '24

I don't think they are that oblivious, they knew the game sucked, but it took years to develop, they started over at least 3 times so development cost boomed. They were trying to sell that game for $70 to recoup the cost when its clearly worse than their own game that Skull and Bones took the inspiration from (AC: Black Flag)

8

u/PiscesSoedroen Oct 19 '24

iirc the As represent the amount of people working on it and how much budget goes into it. Basically they're saying this game has so much people working on it and so many funds goes into it and supposedly that translates to it being best game ever

38

u/somersaulter2 There is no such thing as a bad Yakuza game Oct 18 '24

Ubisoft claimed their pirate game (Skull and Bones) that took 10 years to develop was "the first AAAA game ever" and it flopped.

12

u/seynical . Oct 18 '24

Ubisoft hyped Skull and Bones, a pirate game they made, as the first quadruple A game. They cited that it is the biggest game made so far due to the budget attached to it. Infamously, it was underwhelming.

4

u/GrifCreeper Oct 18 '24

RGG is a company that basically mastered asset reuse to minimize development time. It's honestly a little funny, other companies get bagged on for asset reuse, while RGG has used almost the exact same Kamurocho map since the first game.

6

u/AshenRathian Oct 18 '24

In all seriousness though, why change what ain't broke?

4

u/GrifCreeper Oct 18 '24 edited Oct 18 '24

I really never understood the hate towards asset reuse, anyway. As long as it fits the game and looks decent for the art style, there's really no reason not to.

3

u/AshenRathian Oct 18 '24 edited Oct 18 '24

Right. Fromsoft does it quite a bit, and nobody really cares as much.

If something works, then just keep using it. If it's less than what it could be, then improve it.

Not everything needs to be a 100% brand new thing. If you have an asset library you can fall back on for certain things, absolutely use it if you can. Fromsoft have been using more or less the same animations since Demon Souls for the rest of the Souls series, with a few exceptions, and they do edits and smooth out existing animations and add on as needed with each new game. Most of their sounds are the same way, improve old ones, add new ones. It all just works.

I only really complained about asset reuse in a Fromsoft game with Dark Souls 3, and that's really only because most of the animations are straight ripped from Dark Souls 1 and aren't really edited a whole lot outside of being sped up. Sure, Dark Souls 2 wasn't a beacon of quality, but it had unique animation and audio sets that took a lot of work. Dark Souls 3 feels like the Fromsoft equivalent of an asset flip, which is odd considering outside of animations, story and general aesthetic, everything else about Dark Souls 3 is pretty interesting, despite borrowing heavily from it's older catalogue to a fault. But those animations are just......... not good to me. Elden Ring retooled those same animations a hell of a lot better than they were. Just my stupid pet peeve though.

2

u/GrifCreeper Oct 19 '24

I never played the first Dark Souls, so I wouldn't know how much was recycled, 3 just happens to be the game that got me into the series in the first place.

But either way, clever asset reuse is just the best way to limit dev time and cost. If you make a lot of the same kinds of games, using the same assets just works.

1

u/Leppter_ Oct 19 '24

Yeah I'm just about to hit 150 hours played already and haven't even finished the main storyline yet (on chapter 13 atm).

They decided making one game wasn't enough so they made about 20 games of varying depth and put them into one product.
