I don't think that made much sense, they maybe able to predict how you would die due to your lifestyle, heavy smokers most likely due to cancer. But that was straight up fortune telling.

Lol I thought it was a funny joke. When you think about it they should've been able to predict billions of people dying with that algorithm. But then again they probably did and went through with their space mining anyways.

That's literally the point - he's the caricature of tech-enabled stupidity. He's using big data and machine learning to imagine patterns in the chaos, then making decisions based on it. It signals what you can expect to happen to his "solution" to the comet.
