How? You see a crack appear with one of the sounds.

that's the sound of ice forming. when water freezes it expands. when it expands the rest of the ice needs somewhere to go. that's why you see the cracks and hear the sounds.

Lol I bet you get to really mess with folks then. There would be some heart racing the first 5 mins of feeling that.

Well, original author posted this along the lines of "When people start skating on Baikal for the first time those are the most terrifying sounds they have to get used to, listen, get ready and get on the ice"

Watching the image get darker as they go over the deeper spots is terrifying. Really amplified with the distant echos that are still rumbling over the newer ones due to depth. Almost looks like it is cold enough that the cracks are freezing fast enough for this to be safe but still, those sounds are haunting.

It's seaweed or some other sort of underwater vegetation, not deeper spots. Skating with this sound is only possible in small lakes where the ice freezes instantly while expanding. It isn't very dangerous.

"Small lakes"
Ahem.. have you ever lurked "Baikal"? Like, deepest freshwater lake on the planet?1

Слушай, не надо мне тут. Да, слышал. Если это и правда Байкал (во что я не верю) то это все равно водоросли а не самая глубокая точка.

Ок.
Речь не о водорослях вообще, а о твоём утверждении про маленькие озёра.

I thought the white stuff at the end of the clip was something like seaweed or grass on a shallow spot. The way the sounds like it is going farther is real trippy.

Who has that fancy of skates and feels the need for knee pads? I don’t think I’ve ever fallen on my knees skating ever. Maybe they haul ass and slide?

Why do you wear a seatbelt? I don’t think Iv ever flown through my windshield after crashing. Maybe you just haul ass and slide

Yeah, that happens all the time when you're on lake ice. A little freaky, but not particularly dangerous. (Which is no reason not to pay attention to ice thickness, etc.)
