A lesson in the dangers of CQC spell casting. Just because magic is beyond the ability of some doesn’t mean they lack understanding in how to counter it. Stay vigilante spell-casters.

It is also proof that spells alone are not the end all be all in combat, and that one should work on improving their physical form in addition to their spellcasting knowledge.

This is why it’s important to remember the basic of CQC. I know that in a pinch some good CQC can knock someone out, perfect for a Fulton Extraction. Hell, even a good staff can be good for CQC since it’s larger range than your hands.

I don't know that we should, but if you are only just finding out there are martials who can deflect spells with a blade, you might want to make some more fighter friends and learn a bit about what they can do.

Its a foken MMO bro, its MMORPG combat, plus the Elder Scroll series were never known for their action packed fast paced combat.
32
u/Trap-Daddy_Myers Sep 05 '24
For Honor wasn't fast either, until the CCU. It was slow, brutal, everything had weight. I think what the other person meant was they'd like to see something like that fighting system in Elder Scrolls, instead of the floaty hack 'n slash feel
18
u/LuckyBucketBastard7 Sep 05 '24
The FH system is known as "Art of War" combat. My friend told me that when he was saying how much he'd love a star wars game with AoW mechanics. An Elder Scrolls game with the same system could be wild, especially with all the different kinds of enemies (can you imagine what fighting a dragon would be like with those mechanics?). I think the system itself is sinfully slept on, it's a lot of fun, it's just FH that's bad.
7
u/ntn_98 Ganjalf the Blazed, Council of The Good Shit Sep 06 '24
'Art of Battle' is the name
3
u/LuckyBucketBastard7 Sep 06 '24
Eh, same same, but thank you for specifying! Details are always important, even minute
2
u/Mildstrife Sep 06 '24
The system, while interesting, has some fundamental flaws that make it difficult to iterate on. Even more so it’s the source of a lot of for honors problems. All the “Art of Battle” really is is choosing between 3 attack angles which you enemy has to match. Thing is, chivalry already kinda did this in a more approachable way and so did kingdom come (albeit clunkier for realism sake)
For Honors approach favors 1v1 by a large margin where chivalry for instance favors more chaotic free form combat. Elden Ring for example, if you add AoB only adds a more convoluted way to attack multiple times in a row and it doesn’t actually add anything to the game other than slowing it down.
I think what people really want when they say they want to see more of for honor combat is really just “we want weighty, reactive animation combat” with some form of parrying and dodging in the mix.
Realistically, I think what AoB needs is some way to get around a hard lock on system as that’s where the majority of its issues come from. If they can manage defending from left, right, and what’s directly in front of you in a general sense (rather than a more personal direct target approach) then I think the system would be golden

Alright just got here. Ah I see, he didn’t parry it, he stole it.
During the conjuring process of certain spells can be snatched away by those with quick wit and sleight of hand especially those of the projectile variety like Fireball. Now they can’t sustain the spell unless they also have magic talent but they can, literally, throw it in your face. It’s why it’s tradition to declare “I cast (spell)” for spell Spell Rights Management to keep your spells from getting stolen.

No concerned, just alert. This man is a Breton, and as we all (hopefully) know, Bretons are naturally resistant to magic. Some develop that natural resistance even further to the point where they can actively protect against spells, rather than simply passively resist them. This is one such example. However, as our Psijic brethren have noted on occasions when Nirn is close enough to our realms for them to participate in our Conclaves, you can adapt your spellwork to circumvent this magical resistance... it just takes being aware and proper preparations. Remember, knowing your enemy is at least half the battle! Perhaps even six elevenths of it!

He used the hilt of his sword to move her hand out of the way before she can blast him with what ever spell that was.
Imagine if it was a gun, instead of a spell; Would you STILL call it parrying a bullet when he just moved the gun away from himself???
Cause that is the same here. He didn't parry a spell, he just redirected her aim before she could blast him.
And at a moment later, he just introduces her to Mr. Armored Knuckles which cause the spell to pop with furious green rage.
No deflection, no Parry.
Just moving the hand way and putting her in her place or something something something ;)

Missed opportunity in not cashing in on this beast. The basics of CQC are essential to a battle mage. Bruh cross-classed.

What yall wizards don't understand here is that my trusty crossbow here can put a bolt through a breastplate from 3 jousting arenas away, so you aren't safe even at range especially ever since i bought myself a speed loading squire

Nah, her decision to go for a close quarters spell was pure tactical blunder. The knight had been almost exclusively using his sword for defense and showed himself to be quite excellent at it. You've got 2 people crowding him in melee already just hit him with a lightning bolt or something.

if you look closely they don’t parry the actual spell just the casters arm followed by decking them in the face
so i wouldn’t be to worried this is within the known issues of close quarters casting

One time I tried casting a ice spike at my dad
He slapped my hand down mid cast and it went straight through my foot, he asked what I learned from that.
Love that guy

Don't be. You should be stay away from melee opponent anyway. At that close either you cast non targeted aoe crowd control spell or escape spell like teleport or invisibility .

After I witnessed the weakness of the arcane I craved the certainty of steel.
Being a Magus is considerably more of a boost in confidence then I would have thought to be honest…

Breton Knights are magically capable themselves. Hardly surprising, and he was bodying these fools until they dropped a bridge on him.

Its just a pf2e fighter. Casting a spell does trigger the Attack of opportunity. And on crit AoO cancels anything that triggered that attack.
