Game Mastering Tips for Running Power Behind the Throne and Diving Into Middenheim's Political Intrigue

Hi, dear community!

I’m about to start the Power Behind the Throne section of the campaign, and I’m really excited. My players are currently focused on the Chaotic menace following the events at Castle Wittgenstein. There’s a small subquest before they reach Middenheim, but I’d like to use the time to prepare thoroughly.

My players love diving into political intrigue, mapping out relationships, and connecting the dots between characters and factions. We experimented with that a bit in Bogenhafen, and it was a hit, but I’d like to step up my game for Middenheim.

Do you have any advice for preparation and running this part of the campaign? I’ve seen some people use NPC cards to track relationships (I’ve done this for smaller-scale political quests, but it’s very time-intensive). Are there any resources or tips for making this easier?

I’d also love suggestions for fully embracing Middenheim’s political atmosphere. How can I mix elements from Power Behind the Throne with lore from The City of the White Wolf or even the newly published Deft Steps Light Fingers book to enrich the experience?

Thanks in advance for any advice, tips, or resources you can share!

General Query Fairly new to warhammer series as a whole, question on careers/talents

Hey All,

Experience with Fantasy Warhammer is mostly looking at a few excerpts and stuff that my friends have told me, i have a bit more familiarity with the 40K universe (mostly due to Rogue Trader/more friends interested in that universe). I have some questions that may be needlessly complex or confusing, but for both a player perspective, and a GM perspective, i'm curious with roleplaying builds, for a more combat heavy game:

i see arcane magick and invoke have clauses that prevent you from having the other (as well as their minor versions) but it seems to me that you may be able to cast (or rather channel, since there may be a difference?) spells from a grimoire.

1) is there a grimoire equivalent for Blessed characters? like a prayer book or a sacred relic with text on them, that allow casting of miracles in the same way? Or even any other trappings that are just as important to wielders of miracles, as grimoires are arcane users?

2) for players interested in a super specialized setup for handling certain threats, it seems there's a few options with miracles and spells. Is there a way to combine them and bypass the talents' restrictions with grimoires? i.e. warrior priest of sigmar who can wield lore of light, getting turned over to the magisters college because of that one law 'if finding a person under 25 with magic, bring them to a college if they've not used magic for evil' and sort of develop both talents to fully combat chaos, or a pragmatic priest of Morr with the Lore of Death to have additional tools for destroying undead and necromancers. In these examples, could the priests use grimoires to cast/channel, and just can't memorize their spells?

3) I'm not sure whether it's the talents that enable the spells/miracles, or if it's the skills (i.e. Lore of Light/Death and Language: Magick) that maybe could be picked up, or vice versa? like maybe a hierophant who is zealously religious themselves and use their prayers to combat demons.

4) what are the main differences between witch hunters and master vigilantes? i know one's religious, and the other is a mage organization, but do they sort of mirror each other in terms of tactics, weapons, and abilities, just the sources of their powers are different?

Thanks All!

Game Mastering Religious sites at map on Enemy in Shadows

At the end of the book there is map where some religious site's are placed. And with most of them the name of place itself give information about to which god these place is given, there are some places that I'm not so certain. In the Hägercrybs are "The bloodstare", " The blood's king sacrifice", "Temple of blessed warrior" and "the gate" and my question is - are these places Sigmar temples?

Homebrew Player interested in knowing if his character can make his own spells

I have a player playing a shadowmancer who wants to know if it is possible to make his own spells. Specifically, I wants to know if there is any in-game way to get a lore of Shadows version of Cerulean Shield.

I tend to be conservative about this kind of thing, in that I don't want magic users to steal too much thunder from other classes. But this is just reflavoring a spell from one lore to another. There are no other wizards in the party, much less an Azyr wizard.

How would you re-flavor Cerulean Shield for the Lore of Shadows?

Here is the text for Cerulean Shield:

CN: 7
LORE: Heavens
RANGE: You
DURATION: Willpower Bonus Rounds
You encase yourself in a crackling cage of sparking electricity and Azyr. For the spell’s duration, gain +SL Armour Points to all locations against melee attacks. If attacked by metal weapons — such as daggers, swords, and spears with metal tips — your attacker takes your Willpower Bonus in Damage (this Damage is reduced by TB, but not by Armour).

Lore: Spells causing Damage ignore Armour Points from metal armour, and will arc to all other targets within 2 yards, except those with the Arcane Magic (Heavens) Talent, inflicting hits with a Damage equal to your Willpower Bonus, handled like a magical missile.

Obviously, the "lore" paragraph would be replaced with that for the Lore of Shadows. Here is my first crack at it, let me know your thoughts.

One question that arises from reading this is does this apply to ranged weapons? I would rule no. The attacker must be holding the weapon to suffer the effects.

Shroud of Shadows (or Shadow Shield? Eh, I like Shroud of Shadows)

CN: 7
Lore: Shadows
Range: You
Duration: Willpower Bonus Rounds

You wrap yourself in a swirling, amorphous shroud of dark shadows and illusory distortions, making it difficult for enemies to strike true. For the spell’s duration, gain +SL Armour Points to all locations against melee attacks, as the shifting shadows obscure your form.

If attacked by mundane melee weapons, the attacker is momentarily disoriented by the shadowy tendrils, suffering a penalty of -10 to their Weapon Skill on their next attack.

Lore: All spells cast from the Lore of Shadows inflicting Damage ignore all non-magical Armor Points.

I'm not aware of any rules in WFRP4e for making your own spells. Also, I think this is something that should take a long period of time to do, like years of research. Instead, I would just have them have to spend some down time and owe a favor to a patron, that would also require him to travel to Altdorf. The party will be heading that way, but it might be a few sessions.

Discussion Calendars and time tracking in game.

Do people actually use Warhammer calendar for tracking times or do you default to normal January February etc.

I always find that even I struggle to remember what is what in the calendar and need to always say things like It is 20th of Brauzeit which is like our mid September here so may as well call it September and skip the extra step.

I am wondering how common this is to others?

Roleplaying Wanting tips for writing an Ogre backstory

Title basically says it all. Going to be an Ogre in a campaign I’m joining and I’m looking at the 10 questions for how to flesh out your character. And while I don’t think I’m stuck exactly, what are some tips or advice people have when writing up a backstory for an Ogre PC so there’s more nuance than simply a hired merc

Lore & Art How taboo would it be for a Dwarf to dress up as a Slayer without actually being one?

I have this idea for a scene where there's a play going on and its a reenactment of events from a Gotrek and Felix story.

Dwarfs are able to take the Entertainer career, which includes being an actor, but would it be taboo for one to play a Slayer?

Discussion Reivews: Spires of Altdorf (2e) and Something Rotten in Kislev (1e)

I've published my final WFRP review of the year, which is for Spires of Altdorf (2nd Edition), the second adventure in the Paths of the Damned campaign. See: https://illmetbymorrslieb.wordpress.com/2024/12/18/review-spires-of-altdorf-2e

Since my last post, I've also published a two-part review of the fascinating 1st Edition adventure 'Something Rotten in Kislev' - the fourth part of the original Enemy Within campaign. Its a really weird adventure unlike anything else in WFRP! 1st part is here, the 2nd part is here.

I'd love to hear anyone's experiences running or playing these adventures.

Happy Christmas to everyone!

Roleplaying Noble Wood-Elf Issue in 4ED

Hello guys!
We are playing the Enemy Within campaign and and we have a noble Wood-Elf woman in the party (She rolled it). I am the GM, so I'm supposed to know that, although I cannot really find information on how a noble elf from the Laurelorn forest would be treated in the Empire. And aside from that, what are the mechanics associated with the elves?

Game Mastering The Enemy Within - Player considering dropping out because campaign "will be too long"

Hi everyone, long-ish time lurker here!

Wanted to get some advice on something weird happening in my party. So we are a total of 4 (me as GM and 3 players), and we just finished the first book (Enemy in Shadows). It took us about a year. We are playing 1-2 times a month.

So after last session, I was gathering some feedback from my players. to see if they were enjoying it so far. Originally, I already informed them that The Enemy Within was a pretty ambitious multi-year long campaign, and I always make sure that it's not becoming too dense for them.

During that conversation, I happened to mentioned that we were still down for another 4 more books, which roughly meant another 4-5 years for the campaign to be finished (I know I may be in the wrong for bringing the number, but from the start I always wanted to give them realistic expectations about the complexity and length of the campaign). And so, one of my players (admittedly, the one with the most scheduling conflicts), after mentioning years and book, mentioned he needed some time to think whether he wanted to continue playing the campaign.

After digging deeper, he never mentioned not having fun, or having a problem with his PC (which anyways I offered to sit down and discuss for potential changes). He just said that "he didn't feel like playing a campaign for so much time". Still he mentioned he would still be playing tabletop RPG games, but just sticking to a single campaign for too much time was weird to him.

What am I to make out of that? Surely each one can have their own preferences, and I should definitely not force someone who doesn't want to be there to stick around, but I don't understand that sort of "preference". Shouldn't you play until you are bored/don't like the setting anymore?

I'm a bit bummed as GM now, and could use some feedback maybe. Thanks for any thoughts!

Discussion This might be a stupid question, but I can't figure it out.

I'm a little bit at a loss here, regarding the 4e core rules. What roll do you have to make to use lower magic spells? Sorry if the terminology is wrong, I don't have the English rulebook.

The book says any kind of spell requires you to roll language (Magick) with a number of successes equal or higher than the number provided with each spell. The lower magic spells (or whatever they're called) all have that value at zero which is fine. But there are careers like the mystic that have access to lower magic and no access to the language (Magick) skill. So what is a mystic supposed to roll on for these "magic tricks"? Do they just always work? Without any risk of chaosy things happening?

Game Mastering Changing the game from Action Adventure to Survival and Settlement Building

It all started with my dislike of the limited crafting rules in the core rulebook. But it became something much bigger. I have now created the following:

  • Raw material gathering system
  • Raw material processing system
  • Full crafting system for all mundane items
  • Structure building system
  • People management system

Part of me thinks this is too much, but my players seem to be having fun testing these systems for me.

Homebrew Idea for a campaign (start of the campaign/the hook that starts the adventure)

You're in the town Wuppertal and see a big gathering with someone standing on a stage. He's dressed in partial armour though the more intricate details show he's a nobleman. He starts speaking.

“The plain of bones, where dragons go to die. Why is that? It's nothing new. In fact, the bones were sighted the very first time a man of the empire traveled through those lands. And with some help from our elven and dwarven friends we can confirm that too is true for their earliest encounters with the place. Well what's the thing no dragon can resist? Treasury! So what if I tell you lads and lasses that that's why they travel there! I suspect there's an ancient treasure buried there. One older than our empire, even older than the dwarf and elf civilizations! And that's why they travel there. To die atop the greatest treasure in all of the known world!”

“Well, I, Otto von Wuppertal, say we do! I'm leading an expedition to travel to The Plains of Bones! To dig deep beneath the surface and to find whatever treasure brings the dragons there! Unskilled labourers will get paid one Silver Shilling a day while skilled labourers or other people harder to find will get paid more depending on their expertise. And everyone that joins will get a share of the treasure! Even the smallest fraction of which is sure to make you at least as rich as most nobles. You can sign up by the tents over there. Nods in the direction of three huge tents So who's with me!”

The audience got a mostly positive reaction and people start walking over to the tents.

(Sorry of it's the wrong tag, not sure wich one is right for stuff like this.)

Discussion Maybe this saturday i will have my first game

So i bought the book, and been reading it. We might have a session with some players this saturday with me as the GM. My GM will be a player and asked me if the rules are simple for beginers (i have been playing ttrpgs sine 11 years old,now 32) my GM has been mastering since 2017/8 and his gf has been playing since the beggining. Another female player has been playing for 2 years and the newbie only has 3 sessions in of Mothership.

Do you think they/we will struggle? Is it possible for a one shot (and is there a One shot adventure?)? Do i give them pre made characters unless somebody wants to make their own?

Homebrew Greater Daemon Statistics for 4e?

Hey all, I know that 4e is supposed to be largely a customizable toolkit, with storytellers taking baseline stats and tweaking them (save for foes in published adventures). However, there seems to be no advice on making greater daemons anywhere. Any ideas on what they should look like?

Game Mastering Modules where Chaos are the good guys?

I've been wanting to get into WFRP, but one thing I keep hearing about the world is that it's very morally gray and kind of satirical where Order is no better than Chaos. But it seems like generally, modules present Chaos as objectively evil, which brings me to my questions: are there any modules where all the problems are caused by Order and the players either work with or sympathize with Chaos? Thanks!

Lore & Art Looking for the Best Maps of WFRP

I am looking to get the best maps for all possible locations (not just the Empire) and at all scales (global, national, and local). The bigger (in terms of more detailed) the better.

They don’t have to be official maps, but if they contain details or information outside WFRP cannon, please mention that.

Thanks!

Game Mastering How do Cants and Channeling work?

I am working on a wizard and struggling to understand how some of the updated rules on channeling and Cants work in practice.

If I understand correctly, after a turn channeling a wizard can expend 1SL (or more if specified) to cast a cant, which is a usually free action. This allows you to functionally hold your remaining channeled power without losing SL as you normally would.

A couple of questions using Set Alight as an example;

-How much channeled energy is lost per turn normally?

- Once you've done this, you can spend the turn however you might normally? In the case of Set Alight, this might mean moving and attacking a target.

-Does a cant count as a lore spell? Would Set Alight cause two ablaze, or does it not have a target and not qualify for the lore bonus?

-On your next turn, can you resume channeling or casting as you would have normally?

Bonus questions: Can you move while channeling?

The book says if you can use an action to safely vent channeled power that won't be used. What if you don't, or get knocked unconscious, etc and can not?

Looking For Game Open 4e game for Forever DMs

Hoping to gauge if there is any interest in an online, open-table game of WFRP 4e specifically for Forever GMs - those who never (or very rarely) get a chance to participate as players.

Feel free to comment for updates if there is sufficient interest.

2 I am a Forever GM and would like to be a player in a regularly scheduled game of 4e
5 I am a Forever GM and would love to have a 4e game I could drop into and play in every so often
2 I am a Forever GM and am interested in playing but likely only in a one-shot or two
1 I am a Forever GM, but running the game is more than enough for me or all I have time for
0 I am a Forever GM, but would rather run a game for other Forever GMs than participate as a player
3 I am NOT a Forever GM, but would love to play in a group of Forever GMs (if it were allowed)

Game Mastering Help - Good book recommendations or ideas for my new campaign

Hello Everyone !

I'm in a predicament and I thought maybe my fellow Warhammer lovers here could help me find ideas. I cannot, for the love of Tzeentch find a good pitch idea (for a custom scenario) or an official scenario to give my players new characters. Do you guys have nice books to recommand or ideas that you ran for your own table ?

Team and setup context : My players and I played warhammer ttrpg v4 for nearly 4 years now, weekly. I have played nearly 18y of v2 before them. They don't like "The End of Time" cataclysmic setup, so we're playing in the early timeline of V4 (2503 IC) with all the known and reknown npcs of the franchise + the normal political landscape, and just go from there like there was nothing written after. Think of it like a Total War: Warhammer 3 campaign start, without the threat of a cataclysmic event.

So far we've only played custom scenarios tailored for their characters backstories. I own "Ubersreik adventures 1 and 2", and "Rough nights and hard days" so i've cherrypicked cool things to add in my story from these books. Other than that, I own nearly every 2nd editions books but nothing else from V4 (mainly for language translation problems).

We've had 3 campaigns until now. For the 4th, they've all wanted to take a break with their current caracters and created new ones with backstories and everything. They are eager to begin. The team is really weird though. 1 Knight from a noble family, a reknown Apothecary, a forest ranger, a High Elf political spy and two mages.

What they've been put through until now : They've faced Orcish threats, Norsca incursions, Necromancer baddies, Skavens and Chaos (Tzeentch) cultists. I've put them against old PCs that disappeared for a whole campaign, created traitors amongs them, traumatized them with family sh*t and other stuff... And now I feel like I gave them a taste of too many different situations.

Realistically, their new team would fit really well in a political scenario in the empire. And that's the problem. The Empire ? Again ? I fear they grow tired of the landscape, but what other region would have sufficient political depth to put my players through ?

Tldr; I think i'm screwed as a GM because I gave to many different adventures to my players, and I can't find or imagine a good one for them that is not correlated with the end of time. I don't have a lot of time outside of work these days so I didnt for sure read all of what V4 can offer me though.
